  1. I suppose the removal of earwax is quite an appropriate subject in a mining district.
  2. I believe that what he's got close to his eye is military slang for a sausage roll.
  3. Blimey. I wouldn't want to have your ears.
  4. Update: not a sarcoma - the histology found no malignancy, so much relief all round.
  5. 'Lined chocolate' seems a brave choice.
  6. When the M6 Toll opened in 2003, the charge for a car was £2.50. It is now £8.90. In France, I believe a toll road can only be opened as an alternative to an existing trunk road.
  7. Shouldn't that be 'The Sparagras'?
  8. Bunty had to go under the knife this week. It was a small lump, but a large wound; the vet removed a lot of tissue as sarcomas are very invasive.
  9. Good point. Fowler's 'Modern English Usage' suggests it didn't enter British English until the 1930s, so your original point stands. Sorry for introducing confusion.
  10. OK, meaning okay, dates from the 1830s according to Wikipedia (I know), so long before oil boxes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK
  11. When the GWR named 2905, it was claimed that only they could class Lady Macbeth as a Saint.
  12. ‘Shew’ and ‘shewn’ were obsolete spellings, but many would be familiar with them from their use in the Authorized Version of the Bible.
  13. I believe that first class passengers were entitled to a higher level of compensation in the event of injury. Placing them in the safest part of the train makes a kind of grim economic sense.
  14. On this Dapol salt van G.W.Rly should clearly be G.N.Rly.
  15. From what I remember of that gala, on at least one journey the SRM had to stop between Llangollen and Berwyn to raise steam.
  16. I've never heard it called that before.
  17. This is the wheelset. I think this is Furlong Road in Tunstall.
  18. Some 57xx were built by Kerr Stuart, including 7714 on the SVR.
  19. Random locomotive parts on display seems to be a Stokie thing. I came across a crank axle by the roadside in Tunstall. I think it was from a class 08 diesel shunter.
  20. Poor old dad - sorry, couldn't resist. Looks good though.
  21. Are your Talyllyn figures going to include a twelve year old sander?
  22. Indeed. It was said that sports were huntin', shootin' and fishin'. Everything else was games.
