  1. Many thanks Ian. I fear the attention to detail is a bit selective in my case - I still have much to learn on the technical aspects of stock and track etc. Just had another look at your baulk road, it does look superb. Am considering a siding or two laid in this way on the next Farthing layout so I might pester you on that at some point. But don't worry, it's still way out in the future :-)
  2. Hi ian, I only just found this entry now. The 517 looks great, and I really like the look of the outside bearings on the rear wheels. Never understood why M&L didn't include that in the kit, as I believe most of the class had those. On the subject of polished domes, would you happen to know if Alan Gibson still supplies them in this condition? I only seem to be able to find them either in w/m or in unpolished brass from other suppliers.
  3. Good find and some nice detailing work. The paint job so far looks very neat, I think. Look forward to seeing progress on this.
  4. This looks really good. The way you have positioned the manor/Hotel diorama in an elevated position by itself is interesting. I can see how it serves to hide the fiddle yard, but it also somehow opens up the scene rather nicely. Thanks for sharing.
  5. That's quite something Will. Please do share photos of progress with this one!
  6. I'm speechless Pugsley. Those bogies should be exhibited on their own, they are fantastic models in their own right. Surely you don't intend to hide them beneath a loco body? :-)
  7. I thought your new water looked great, then I realized it was a Gin Tonic The new station building does look more sturdy. Will be interesting to follow the gradual build-up of detail, please continue to keep us updated :-)
  8. Was going to insert some sage quote about mistakes being the foundations of success. But you already know that, so instead I'll just compliment you on your crisis-management strategy (grabbing a lemon etc) That track looks really neat btw!
  9. Using the GW as template can never be wrong :-) Many thanks for sharing this. The Smiths ones are nice but only show one variation/period. I had not thought of doing these on the PC. You say you want it proffessionally printed - will a standard printer not be able to print it on thin paper?
  10. Thanks very much Buckjumper. Since these are micros, it is a bit embarassing that overall progress is so slow when compared to the epic undertakings that I greatly admire, such as your own Basilica Fields (no other comparison intended!). But as I think you'll agree, it's all very much about enjoying the process, isn't it.
  11. Hi Jules, really nice 6-planker. I like how the goods yard is developing, the view from a distance shows a fair amount of depth to the scene which looks good. Those boxy crates are nice, what manufacturer are they from?

    Building Buildings

Progress is good, but progress of this quality is even better! Very very nice buildings, and the stonework is really superb.
  13. Good to hear this Frank. Please don't stop your blog entries though, they are much appreciated.
  14. A full symphony Jon (horns and all!). And many thanks for describing things in such detail. Much to learn, also for us kettle people.
  15. Thanks Jon :-) But very disappointing that you are not permanently logged on to RMweb! Don't think you can escape from us! As Al Pacino says in The Godfather: Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in! :-)
  16. Whoa, many thanks everyone! Particularly heartwarming as I left on some work travel after uploading this, so am a long way from home just now. But RMweb is everywhere :-) Yes, its simple stuff. A more elaborate picture frame could be chosen in order to help set the scene through its design or livery, but in this case I opted for something simple The concept could be expanded/adapted to provide controlled viewing of the wider layout through multiple picture frames. I'm considering this for the rear view of the depot. Not sure what the two are discussing. Could be a mising fire bucket. But more on that later :-)
  17. Not quite a "heist" movie, but my family did wonder what I was up to in the basement this weekend...
  18. Interesting. Does specular light in this case mean light reflected from an off-scene source, or light reflected directly in the item you are photographing?
  19. Really nice atmosphere and great modelling. Very good point that an assembly of smaller buildings/shed can sometimes be more "right" / provide more atmosphere than big buildings. The ground cover is really convincing, and the way it blends into the (tarred?) bit in front of the sheds is really good, I think. You say the ground cover is fine ash - is that real ash, or the stuff that eg Carr's sells as "fine ash" ?
  20. All of the above, and it also brings out the trackwork and ballasting particularly well, which looks bl**dy good. Amazing what armchair modellers can dream up ;-)
  21. Thanks for elaborating. "Each train is its own universe" - I like that :-)
  22. Thats looks really good. The stone is very convincing, incl. both the shapes and colour. And thanks for elaborating on the clay, that's a useful introduction. Text duly copied and saved for future use :-) Pink lime wash, eh? :-)
  23. Can't seem to find it anywhere - nor in the forum.
  24. What kind of a public house has a black tie dresscode? Or is that a new EU regulation?
  25. Hi Julia :-) Great modeling as usual, but am particularly impressed that you broke a mental barrier. That can be one of the hardest things to do, I think. Oh, and despite all this fancyful non-GWR work you're into, I'm glad to see you made a Freudian slip and wrote "mogo" instead of "mojo". Makes a GWR person like me feel right at home ;-)
