  1. I don't think that any of us are fault-free drivers (or pedestrians/cyclists either), and that it beholves us all to allow for other people's mistakes-hence the excellent hazard perception part of the driving test. I would suggest that nearly all collisions are the result of either more than one person's mistake or someone not allowing for someone else's mistake. My father used to talk about removing the mote (whatever that is) in your own eye first. Ed
  2. Who will be the first person to make two moguls out of one of these and an old Triang Princess? Ed
  3. Thank you, extremely interesting. I now know what a SWATH vessel is! These modern large cargo ships do tend to be rather ugly though, don't they? The car carrier out of Palermo, is she carrying cars from Sicily (they used to make some FIATs there, but I don't know if they still do), or is she just registered there? Ed
  4. Should have read the OP properly, but my point was "do not enter the box unless your exit is clear". Ed
  5. Yes, the idiots in charge DO expect us all to travel by public transport. It killed the dome and will not help the Olympics. Anyway, why build more stuff in the overcrowded centre of London. Isn't about time we took stock of the terminal stupidity of commuting by any means? Ed Thanks for the photo's BTW, it's a fabulous building, although I do question the wisdom of such a tall building so near to the Heathrow flight path
  6. They already have two going spare for most of the day! Ed
  7. Agreed that the current coverage is the best yet, but don't forget that it improved by an order of magnitude when ITV first took it on. The problem of course was the ad. breaks during the race. If Sky can guarantee not to do this then why not? Whilst I like motorsport I'm less than impressed by the huge amount the beeb is spending on it. BTW, why has no-one here commented on the ITV4 coverage of the BTCC series? You get to spend a whole Sunday at the track seeing the support races as well, and in my view (and of both my sons who don't like F1) the Touring cars are a lot more entertaining. Ed
  8. I don't know how many people will have heard of the Arizona Smoke Review, but check out their version of Springsteen's "Factory Song". It is on U tube, but I can't do links. Ed
  9. I think that Bob Dylan is one of, if not the best song-writers of all time, but I think that pretty much any cover of any of his songs is an improvement over the original. Two immediate examples are the Hollies ancient album "Hollies Sing Dylan" and Martin Simpson's "Masters of War" and "Boots of Spanish Leather". Ed
  10. Back in the 50's/60's my Great Uncle George was a dustman, but he and his family were always at pains to point out that what he actually did was to drive the "salvage wagon", whatever that was; clearly above the average dust-cart. Ed
  11. Do you mean the new model which is being advertised on TV at the moment, or the previous incarnation? A friend of my son had one of the older ones (04 or 05 plate) which he and my sons all agreed was pretty good, BUT it wasn't "cool" enough for them, so he changed it for a chavved-up Corsa! In Stevenage we have a long-established Kia dealer, so there are lots of them around here. In your position I'd be reluctant to get one if the nearest dealer is a long trek. Ed
  12. Why not? Isn't Ribblehead a scheduled monument too? Ed
  13. I believe that a major requirement is a rigid pole. Ed
  14. As I understand it , it was due to the difficult crossing of the Tamsr, the only road bridge is single track. Sorry, don't know about the commuting situation, although if it was me then once in the car I'd stay in it and drive into Plymouth. Ed
  15. Without any doubt the first model railway layout to inspire me was a BLT called "Bangthorn" which was in the Meccano Magazine in 1965 or 6. The first layout I built (as opposed to Dad) was largely based on it. It had never occurred to me that trains did not have to go in circles! Funny how times change-I will only have a tail-chaser now. By far the most impressive layout I have ever seen was Tebay. Based on a prototype, but what a prototype. Junction, branch lines, loco shed, crack expresses with top link loco's, my favourite period, trains stopping for bankers etc. Mostly though, for exhibition purposes it told you what was going on for every movement. Brilliant! The third is a lot more difficult. I think I will give another vote to Buckingham though. As has been said it was nearly all scratch built by one man, and again every move had a purpose. Mostly though because I had the pleasure of meeting the builder and helping to operate the layout once. He was a lovely bloke. Ed
  16. The late Martin Brent's beautiful 7mm layout "Arcadia" had some moving cameos on it. I am fairly sure the layout is still in existence, I will make inquiries at the Watford show this weekend. Many many years ago the Railway Modeller ran a series of articles on a 4mm layout called "Ortogo" by Jack Dugdale (IIRC) which had all kinds of things, the one that sticks in my memory was rabbits that came in and out of their burrows. Ed
  17. Whatever floats your boat! Good luck and enjoy whatever you do, and keep us posted. It won't look as silly as my HO Union Pacific Challenger next to a Hornby Duchess. Ed

    Dapol Class 22

It worries me when pre-production models are wrong. Surely these should be absolutely bang-on? I gather that for some pre-production samples good quality kits have been used. Of course we are now in the realms of such rare and unloved prototypes that nobody has thought it worth making a kit of!! Ed
  19. If you allow the West Somerset because of through trains, then you must allow the Swanage Line for the same reason. In my view neither count because they don't regularly run into the main line station. I'd tend to agree with the Bodmin and Wenford though. The section from Bodmin Road up to General is effectively a complete branch line. Ed
  20. To me, a "preserved" railway is an attenpt to recreate a railway from the past. My model railway is also an attempt to recreate a railway from the past. If I were to make a model of a preserved line then I'd be recreating a recreation, or modelling a 1:1 model!! Ed
  21. As I read that advert it appears that the seller IS the N Gauge Society. Ed
  22. Yes, those are what I'm thinking of. It was rather inconsiderate of you to move to Spain before you built it, the exhibition managers may baulk at your expenses claim!! Ed
  23. Clearly he didn't, that's why he used the tins! I've not seen this before, and I am as impressed as everyone else with it. Two questions: 1) what CAD package did you use, and was it wire frame, surface or solid modelling? 2) are the viaducts the ones that are always being shown on telly programmes set in Manchester? Ed
