The line in the first square was ex-LNWR, the line in the second square wasn't. These lines met an ex-LNWR EW line at the aforementioned junction. This EW line is still in place, though disused.

Less than a mile to the south-east, there was one of those railway crossroads that seemed to materialise in the middle of nowhere. About three miles south of the junction is this square.

It's a disused line on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh

The geometric appearance of the path and track in the NE part of the square is because they are on the edge of an international airport. If the railway line is followed for about 4 miles eastwards it passes the site of what was once a scrapyard. Fortunately for airline passengers, these two facts are not linked.......

South of Lesmahagow, next to the M74.

Passenger services were lost on this line as a result of the Beeching cuts, though it remained open for freight. The passenger services were restored in 1995.
