  1. Likewise from me too Dave - my comments weren't meant as any form of criticism, far from it, just a general first impression really. Thanks for clearing up those points in your post too. I looked at the 22s long and hard yesterday and walked away with a smile on my face, the very 'squat' nature of the real machines has been captured to a tee as far as I'm concerned and I look forward to giving at least one example a typical 'Laira' paint job in due course!

Time to dig out those old photos again methinks, then decide which ones to 'do'.... ;)

  2. The numbers (as applied to the examples on show today) are oversized and the glazing looked a little milky but the overall impression for me is very good. There's a lot to capture on a such a relatively small loco but I think Dapol have done a great job. From what I saw today, the headcode box apertures could do with being opened out a bit more but the 'face' looks good.

With the various livey options and detail differences between class members, there's going to be some enjoyable modelling ahead. By the late 60s, no two seemed to be alike!

  3. Late on parade today but this morning the frost outside was rather nice. This afternoon I was coasting down the Midland Mainline from Desborough Summit with the Angerstein Wharf - Bardon Hill empties, and the colours all around me were simply beautiful, I do love this time of year when I'm 'at work'! Only a Wellingborough 9F coming the other way, toiling up the bank, could have made it any better ;)

  4. Any of the Colwick ones could turn up on the GC as Colwick was still responsible for many of the passenger locos.

A quick scan of Yeadon comes up with no less than 40 of them allocated to Colwick at some time in BR days, I may have missed one ot two though.

Thanks for the tip chaps ;) . Currently without a layout at the moment so I don't 'need' an L1 but there's a long term plan brewing which takes in workings at Rugby Central and Midland stations.... modellers license is a wonderful thing. Anyway, it's such a beautiful model... how could I resist?

  5. Ooh yes, very nice that. Perusing Colin Walker's 'Main Line Lament' I've found a likely suspect for one, namely 67756 on a Nottingham - Rugby Central local, nicely grimed up to boot B)

  6. 'Morning'... well it is for me,spent the small hours marooned aboard a freezing cold Railgrinder on the Leamington - Coventry line, by the cringe those things are draughty!

Typically Autumnal here but quite cosy all the same, the sky might be a touch 'German Grey' but the colours on the trees are rather fab. Just finished rearranging the book cupboard and pulled out the late Colin Walker's 'Great Central Twilight' for further perusal. Currently supping a brew and wondering if anywhere in town has Model Rail #150 on their shelves ;)

  7. Afternoon all ;)

Beautiful blue sky here at the eastern edge of Warwickshire but the temperature is dropping, my other half has lit the wood burner already. Would love to start a much needed modelling session but work looms later on so will peruse the GCR book* I bought yesterday instead... shame I can't crack open a beer!

    * how's this for a title.... 'Rabbits & Runners, All The Joys Of The Old Great Central Railway Between Annesely And Woodford Halse 1960 - 1965' !!

  8. Apologies accepted Mike ;) Could you just not find the picture of the equivalent trackwork at Gala?

Your description of 'half a double-slip' resonated with me, having seen this kind of S&C before, I always assumed they were a part-dismantled slip of some sort (slaps forehead in despair).

Nidge, that link to the ebay photo of 78049 at Kelso is fantastic :D Never seen the KELSO name spelled out in white stones on the bridge embankment before, mainly pics swung round to the right - when the Lada dealer had set up shop on the station site :(

My pleasure squire, I was indulging in one of my customary trawls through the railwayana photo pages and it leapt out at me because of the name spelt out in the background! I think there may be others on ebay at the moment, it's always worth a dip) I had to check back via this thread that Kelso was indeed a WR station before typing out the above post though, as I'm not that up on the route really. I'm finding this exotic corner of the forum very distracting, I must go off and have a look at something else (disappears into 'The Library' and pulls out some gritty GCR material to while away the afternoon... ;) )

  9. Nipped into Robert Humm's shop on Stamford station this afternoon and whilst paying for my purchases I noticed a copy of this much sought after book on the counter. Asking about it I was told by the very nice lady that it was for sale, priced at £100, and that I might be better off buying a new copy when it's reprinted... she wasn't sure when but I hope it's true!

Had a quick leaf through and was very impressed with the contents, not having seen a copy before, although I knew what to expect as I have his other books 'And Gone Forever' and 'Decline Of Steam', both of which are superb. The last time I saw 'Each A Glimpse' on ebay the bidding was up to around £300!

    Nidge ;)
