  1. I have been following this thread with avid interest as a user of Saltash station in the late 50's. Before the Tamar road bridge was built the latest connection to Devon was the old Saltash Motor (The ferry had left by then and it was a long way down to the slipway). I seem to remember sprinting from the Wearde direction along the path which ran over the viaduct alongside the track and into the station. As it was invariably dark, I was intrigued as to you enquiry about the goods yard as I clearly passed it in my hurry! Using Google Earth, one can see how things have changed in that area. What were footpaths or tracks are now roads.
  2. Looks like North Rd plus SR(LMS type 2MT?) lurking with No 1 head signal for Plymouth Friary and Tavistock. The only thing bugging me is the row of houses in the background towards Mutley. I didn't realize that they were so tall or the land rose so quickly. Must be a trick of the lens/memory!
  3. I seem to remember seeing submarines being scrapped at the Plymouth end of Laira Bridge from the bus whilst travelling to Pomphlett up until 66 when we left Plymouth. I also have a dim memory of the Amethyst (or was it the Wild Swan) being scrapped in the 50's but on the opposite bank.

  14. May I add my endorsement of Rails. As no.1 son works in Sheffield, he sometimes walks to Rails in his lunch hour to obtain sundry items as they appear for me. He has commented that everytime he has visited they are very busy but give him their full attention when they have finished what they were doing.
  15. Check out Ebay No. Â Â 320587597514 not expensive, but what is it ???????????
  16. And I thought it was the 4500-74 type that were difficult to get hold of, having lost out on many auctions.
  17. Check out No. 320558262871. I don't believe it!
  18. I agree with the previous comments regarding the Sheringham shops and endorse the model shop at the Bure Valley Railway in Aylsham, which is my local. If you are passing through Norwich then Great Eastern Models provides a wide selection including second hand.
  19. In Locomotives Illustrated no 60 GWR 0-4-2T, there are several photos of 58xx's. On page 23, there is 5811 ex-works, and unknown at Newcastle Emlyn c1947. On page 25, 5801 at Barmouth in 1956 still in GWR ownership in 1956 as well as 5816. On page 24, 5816 in early BR livery. Hope this helps.
  20. I popped in there last summer as I was visiting 30 miles away and experienced the same problem, but I perservered and eventually got served. There seemed to be a lot of people dashing about and on the PC. Probably providing their excellent postal/Ebay service. I whiled away the time looking at their display cases!
