Uncle Roger and engine emissions
Pandora replied to jjb1970's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
It is an offence to use a vehicle on a public road (Construction ad Use Regulations) with such alterations to the emission and pollution control system -
Class 91 withdrawals and appreciation

I have noticed that some 91s are affected by corrosion, below the running lights large holes where the metal has rusted through -
BR Class 122 "Bubble Car" units in Scotland
Pandora replied to Blobrick's topic in UK Prototype Questions
For the record, the NR digital video recording unit, a bubble car equipped with sophisticated digital cameras , ran around Scotland including the Far North around 15 years ago -
Sir Nigel, I believe he was based at an office within the station, where exactly was the office located? There is a suite of offices in the tower block above platform 0 track at the country end of the station, the decorative cast metal of the stair bannisters suggests this accommodation was for the use of senior staff of the company.

I called into Kings Cross this morning, no 91s or Azumas to be seen, only HST sets at work, staff told me of OHL problems near Doncaster. Oh dear! -
275+ PSI or higher?
Pandora replied to thx712517's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
We tend to have a blinkered line of sight in our examination of British steam, USA manufacturing was so far in advance of us, such as steam loco frames cast as a single bed complete with cylinders, steam locos with bhp per cylinder 3 times greater, the duplex steam locos which by legend in normal passenger service exceeded the record set by Mallard. The USA dropped steam quckly as they had home produced oil supplies on hand for dieselisation. The industrial might of the USA arose In WW2 as Britain passed the theoretical knowledge of the nuclear bomb across to the USA in the estimation that Britain did not have the industrial might for manufacture of the weapon -
275+ PSI or higher?
Pandora replied to thx712517's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
The Castle was the benchmark for efficiency , witness the LMS claim for their fresh new 4-6-0 runs with the dynamomter car showing figures which matched (note did not exceed) the thermodynamic efficiency of the Castle. Gresley was sceptical and after a suitable wait requested the loan of the LMS dynamometer car, LNER back to back trials of the LNER and LMS cars showed serious design flaws in the mechanism of LMS dynamometer car drawbar giving exaggeration of the actual figures to the embarrassment of the LMS. The GWR rested on past glories and after 1948, Doncaster Drawing Office staff headed off to Swindon to deliver a few lessons -
275+ PSI or higher?
Pandora replied to thx712517's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
I think I read Bulleid was thinking of 350 psi, and compromised maximum boiler pressure because of maintenance costs of the higher pressure, google LMSR 6399 Fury, the experimental LMSR 4-6-0 with three steam circuits, 1400 - 1800 psi, 900 psi for the cylinders and a 250 psi circuit -
I suppose the reinforcement would be as and when required, if the crews complained of noise and vibration of the cab wall, the 08 would receive the angle iron to stiffen up the structure of the cab wall

In the case of crash shunting, we can offer the excuse of the rule book in force in the mind of the operator and of the "historical era" of the layout, it is correct that for at least 20 years, the rule book states approach and stop 6 feet short and then ease up to the stock, failure to comply is classed as a train accident, similarly, the ease back after uncoupling is 2 feet . the rules on shunting on the railway is a subject of itself, certain depots yards and sidings have local rules and instructions which may be read in the Sectional Appendix, those local rules permit use of ropes or road vehicles to perform shunting of stock , but as a rule a traction unit is standard, one thing I cannot see in the Sectional Appendix, any references to fly shunting, loose shunting, or use of horses.

There are examples such as 2012 Olympics, a sizeable group of cyclists set off from Waterloo heading north , they were stopped at Waterloo Bridge and ordered not to proceed as the Police believed they "may be" riding to venue of the Olympic opening ceremony in Stratford, many were arrested , it went to court, the police case was laughed out of court, in the summing up " the police may just as well have gone to a railway station platform and arrested every commuter intending to travel by train.
-
It is also we seem to accept that the Police have the right to stop people at random without a rational reason, surely the Police should only exercise their power if they have reason to suspect you are commiting (or about to ) commit a crime, one of the reasons why Police home in on certain individuals, " his shoes had not seen polish for a long time"

A Black 5 piloting an A4 in Scotland was an enthusiasts special comprised of 17 or 19 coaches ( from memory), the special was organised to recognise the demise of the A4 class during their Indian Summer of the accelerated Aberdeen - Perth passenger service. either Railway Magazine of Railway World ( or both) reported the event as an article soon after.

Class 91 withdrawals and appreciation

My recollections of a 91 + 43 combination was being swept along a down train starting off a station with an up gradient an a tunnel in quick succession, I think it would have been Grantham. The 91 s and stock would also work a triangle turning move, would that have been on the Leeds - Skipton route? -
Its a dangerous world trackside

Only a couple of years ago, A Tamper was at work in a possession when it shorted a juice cable in the four foot, the juice etc had been isolated and strapped out with permits to work issued, but the rogue live cable was part of a power upgrade scheme which had not been commissioned or signed off , No one knew or suspected it was live at the time and there were no injuries other than a fright, again one of those holes in the slices of cheese scenarios prevented an electroction. -

The whisperings from platform 10 at The Cross were 3 locos to be withdrawn per week to finish the class 91 in September, seems rather harsh and pessimistic. -

There is a man who has logged over 9 million miles of Class 91 haulage, when the time arrives for the final ECML run of the last 91, I think he deserves VIP treatment with a cab ride for the trip -
I can see the 12V feed from the decoder, but I cannot see the Ground for the diodes in the circuit

The total cost of developing the 91, that cost being divided over a small fleet of 31 must have weighed heavily on the minds of GEC engineers. Did GEC hope (in vain) of future orders elsewhere such as WCML or Great Western? -
there were a couple of week day evening passenger stock turns, Leeds to Doncaster and return which often had the last of the 55A Jubilees up front, they would arrive at Doncaster Platform 3 at around 6 pm and 7pm, uncoupled before a very frantic turning movement on the Balby Bridge/Hexthorpe/St James Bridge triangle. As young spotters we knew this as the 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock Jubilees and we can date this from the reducing fleet, I think Achilles was the earliestregular to "no-show" and Hardee and Sturdey the most usual performers, so do these count towards the some of the final Jubilee workings?
