Impressive. My mk1s are mostly still in bits!!
-
I'm reading this and not seeing a great amount of negativity and think this is a good model. With a few tweaks mentioned here this could be great and isn't that the point of a test press so to speak? I don't think modellers in general will comment on the bits that are spot on as there's no need to change them. I always look for things that can be improved so that's hopefully how the feedback has been taken. After all there isn't a single model I've built that can't be improved and done better imo! And it was good to see an example painted. .. after all unpainted in black I hadn't noticed the rivets Keep up the good work! Will

All this 47 talk has made me dig out my vitrains project. I'm just hoping Heljan buy a set of Shawplan frames and make sure theirs match.... My entertainment in the hotel this evening.... sticking frames on a 47. It's amazing how much filing is needed. I have plans for a few more Duffs so I'm rather looking forward to seeing Heljans efforts! Cheers Will

James Makin's Workbench - 1990s dirty diesels & grotty wagons
dj_crisp replied to James Makin's topic in Layout topics
Very nice James and excellent rusting effect... even though it's a little sad to see ! The metals tractor is probably one of my all time favourites of yours! I'm most impressed with the brush finish you've achieved with the upper grey repaint! Cheers Will -
In my opinion; Buy it now or best offer Listing = accept lower offers or buy it now Auction listing with best offer = accept a higher offer to end now or chance it and offer less when nearing the end if there are no bids. I had a best offer the other day which i counted. My counter was rejected and the item eventually sold for double my counter. I think I'll probably not bother so much with best offer but I've had a few good offers that have been worth accepting.

Aha is this one of your paint jobs lee? A nice view of the cabs in the link below 25093 Overall it looks pretty good and agree the front cab windows aren't quite right - it always seems to be cab windows on diesels that need attention!!

Looks great and I quite like the warping effect! cheers Will

It's probably fair to say that there hasn't been a 47 released with the front looking right. (It's really obvious when you try to stick on some shawplan frames and the amount of filing needed for window frames). Otherwise I don't think Heljan will have bothered releasing this. I think both Bachmann and Vitrains can be made to look ok - but as I'm finding there is a fair amount of work needed! Really hoping Heljan pull this off this time and they release a few NSE examples

No number or nameplates would be great.

My detailing/repainting projects

Looks pretty good to me... Although I'm no rat expert. -
I hope they just get the shape right... especially the front windows which'll make or break this release for me

Thanks Wayne I think you're right. I've stored the rail in the same location as the layout and have had no issues. As soon as I start using it... then rust! Cleans up ok though. Cheers Will

On a slightly different topic.... I'm not sure if anyone has used steel rail but I found the smallest amount of moisture caused the concrete sleeper track to rust. I stuck it down with my normal PVA last night and woke up to find a fine rust had appeared on the side and top of the rail. Quite alarming tbh and I'm sorely tempted to use nickel silver for the rest of the layout to match everything else that's been laid. I'm not sure if this is normal and anything to really worry about? Cheers Will

Thanks Jack I think the original builder was after that kind of viewpoint as it would have been the end of a runround, (rather than a bit of main line). I'm hoping that with a bridge in the background it'll look ok still. That's probably as creative as I think I can be!

Great stuff James... I never get bored seeing lots of 60s One day I may even get round to doing a RF metals one. I know what you mean about Brian's nameplates.... I almost came home with a set of plates that were completely inappropriate for me just because they looked amazing. Even my EWS 60 has a set of nameplates making the loco a good 10 years too modern... but it it looks pretty Jack - I think I'll have a go with your tip. I've spent ages tinting LEDs and haven't found anything that looks right. Always ended up replacing with warm white LEDs and even then they can look a little bit white Cheers Will -
I''m slowly getting there with one of the main lines being finished on board one! The sharp eyed reader may have noticed that I've realigned the exit from the double slip for a third and final time... now they have a gentle curve and are flat bottom which works better for the second board. I have to admit I'm not happy with the sidings point though... It doesn't seem right and looks a little close to the slip but before i do anything crazy like having another go I'm going to finish off more of board two to check how it looks. Also I've had serious gauge issues with the flat bottom point to the top of the picture. The needle file has come out again and I’ve attempted to widen gauge around the blade. It's currently very smooth so hopefuly this doesn't fail, but if it the gauge tightens then I'm going to have to replace some of the sleepers and solder key points of the point to maintain gauge. That won't be fun A pair of MK1 coaches pretending to be a DMU! I took a few photos to see how a DMU will look like exiting the bay with a little snaking before it leaves the board I'm pleased with how it looks and flows.... and while I was mocking up the back scene I couldn't resist seeing what a 50 looks like on the main... And then an up bank photo. (Yep only just noticed it’s derailed…. Doh) I’m now planning on siting the signal box to the left of the 50 at the end of the fertiliser siding as that’s probably a sensible spot. And finally… buffer stops primed. Thats pretty much whats been keeping me busy the last month! cheers Will
