  1. As a keen follower of KL2 somehow I had managed to miss the fact that you had started on this build Jeff.

Anyhow, I have just spent the last three hours reading through the project so far and have to say that the viaduct, even at this stage, is simply stunning.

Looking forward to continuing to follow during 2021.

All the best, and a better 2021 than 2020.

  2. They look great Duncan, especially with all the individual paint jobs.

I cannot believe that in this day and age we still have no decent RTR example of this wagon in N.

May have to resort to looking at what can be done to the Farish example, especially the hideously thick chassis.

I think it's good to have a near blow by blow series of postings,  it certainly gives me an insight into how things can be done and gives some inspiration for us mere mortals who aspire to such levels of modelling ability.

I agree and I am certainly not getting tired of the updates, keep them coming Grahame.

From that I assume you're using the magnetic ones Scott; have you tried adjusting the tails?

Yes, I am using the Dapol Magnetic couplings, in this case the medium length variety. The pins are pushed as far as I can get them upwards but they still caught the points.

Having now donned my magnification visor I can see that there is a cut out/notch on the original coupling arms that allow the shank to clear the underside of the buffer beam and then permit the coupling head to sit higher between the buffers (if you see what I mean).

This notch has been replicated on the Dapol magnetic coupling this afternoon with the aid of a small diamond coated file and all is now good, all be it with the pins still pushed upwards.

    Result !!

I use Dapol couplers on my stock;  the Sturgeon needs the long Nemcoups to couple to adjacent vehicles; mine is coupled at one end to a Farish SR brake in olive green and surprisingly this too needs a long Nemcoup  to avoid buffer lock with the Sturgeon. Furthermore, I can't see how these couplers can be used in a rake of Sturgeons.

I have medium dapols on mine at present which seemed to be ok.

Big issue for me is that the couplings seem a tad lower and the Dapol couplings are fouling in peco points due to the height being lower.

  7. I dont believe the grey stripe Redlands were done in the first batch of OO. The livery was first advertised on the sadly demised N gauge variant.

The Grey stripers are due in the second batch of the OO run so they will not be in any shop to get your hands on at present if my thinking is correct.

Tip - don't wait until they have been released, pre-order as soon as they are announced!

Looks like pre-orders have exceeded planned manufacturing quantities!

Whilst I agree with your comment and generally do exactly as you say myself, it does not neccessarily mean that if you have not pre-ordered you wont be able to buy them from a supplier when they are released.

Some/most suppliers will not just buy stock to satisfy pre orders, however I suspect some will.

What it does mean is when they are available on the web/in shops, dont hang around as when they are gone they won't be able to order any more from the manufacturer.

Sorry to hear this but I stand by my view that the Yeoman type would have been better received, largely due to the various haulage used on these and maybe the geographical spread too.

Motive power for the Redlands that I can think of off the top of my head is pretty varied as well:-

2x20, 2x25, 2x31, 37, 45, 47, 56, 58, 60, 66 all used through the years either on the main trains out of Mountsorrel or the portions from March to various East Anglian terminals.

The photos I have seen show Motorail branding on the ends of the coach not sides.  13215 was dual braked and dual heated but retained BR1 bogies. Given its withdrawl date (1986) I would think that it was used when motorail had allocated stock but were not branded.

That is the case, in fairly small lettering. Similarly the blue GUV that was branded as Motorail had no large bodyside letters as per the Express Parcels variant, it too had small lettering whiuch was high up on the bodyside.

  11. From memory (been a while since I did it).

I removed the existing coupling but retained the "back box".

I cut a slot from the top of the bogie just wide enough for the Dapol coupling to slide down into it and locate correctly..

Then I cut off the back end of the Dapol coupling to a length that reached inside the back box and affixed with five minute epoxy.

OK, there is no movement up/down or side to side but it enabled the Dapol easishunt to be fitted and has not let me down as yet.

Whilst at it I also did the "narrowing" of the bogie operation as it is too wide as is.
