  1. The crossover on the curve is just around the corner from March West Jnct, box visible top right of picture.

The main line between Ely & Peterborough is running under the footbridge and in front of the rugby posts, the junction being protected by the home signal just visible to the right of said rugby posts and behind the bracket signal.

Traffic would be slow as even with a clear road the train would only just be clearing Whitemoor Yard if headed in the opposite direction to that of the pictured train, and if as pictured, it would be approaching Whitemoor Jn and then Yard.

There may well have been a speed restriction on the curve but traffic would have been moving slowly anyway.

  2. Evening Andy,

A thumbs up from me for BR Blue :-)

I am a tad troubled by the comment about seeing large logo 56 and 47s on 16T minerals though. 56's were/are air brake only and whilst not being aware of what minerals you are speaking about, I am sure they would have been vacuum brake.

Apologies if I am misreading or missing the point of your statement or maybe they were air braked POA's rather than 16T minerals ?

    Regards

  3. Hi Jeff

Good to see KL2 has begun. I for one asked to see you progress on the garage conversion, so please keep the pics coming.

Difficult to see from the latest pics, but have you insulated up to the depth of the horizontal "plank" additions and then boarded directly on top, ie have you also insulated over the breeze block butresses, or is there an air gap between the insulation and the plyboard with no insulation over said breeze blocks ?

    Thanks

    Scott

  4. Hi Andy

If your looking for angles etc why not google earth Bitton and the result is a HD image that you can stick "a ruler" on by using google earths tools which may be of huge assistance.

Even if you don't want to measure things up it shows the layout off to a tee.

    Merry Christmas

  5. They were always painted, be it blue, as I recall, or black, although I do not recall seeing any so treated, and in no apparent change of paint type ie anti slip either, standard banger blue.

I use the term "walkways" loosely and refer to the area above the solebar forward of the cabs at the base of the numerous bodyside doors, where staff often stood/walked to gain access to the aforementioned doors.

I only guess these areas were used as walkways seeing as there is a handrail running along the nose at head height.

The disc version has the same areas painted blue, albeit weathered.

I agree with Mataiau's post however, dirt would be an appropriate colour.

  6. They look seriously tasty.

Got a headcode box variant today and was somewhat surprised to see that the surface of the "walkway" areas along the side of the loco is painted black rather than BR Blue.

Looking at images of the disc version they are blue. Can anyone shed any light on whether 20192 had some kind of non standard paint job as I do not recall them being painted black back in the day.

  7. As the Coalite plant at Bolsover, where that pic is taken, produced smokeless fuel (IIRC), maybe an train of coke for export to Ireland would fit the bill nicely as coal was usually exported to Ireland via Liverpool Docks / Garston back in the days that the picture was taken. Imported stuff only really started with the run down of our own coal industry.

  8. In addition to the grey roofs on the blue & grey coaches that has already been mentioned, has anyone else noticed a line running the length of the coaches on both sides in the blue paintwork about 2mm down from the grey window area.

It resembles the sort of line you get when roller painting a wall that is created by the end of the roller.

This line is present on both of my buffets and all four of my 2nd class coaches that I have purchased recently, it is not however present on either the black roofed 1st or 2nd class coaches that came in the bookset.

I await my incorrectly numbered 1st class additional coach but expect that to be the same.

  9. Hi D1059,

When the Portsmouth harbour-Leeds was introduced (I believe) the 73's were booked as motive power throughout for 3 weeks until the powers that be, decreed a motive power change.

Now I remember when I got the first one as I was on the way back from a permit visit to Swindon works and scrap line, on the first Friday of it running (it may have been the first Friday of that years summer timetable though).

The year was around 1980 just before the works closed if that helps track the working at all.

Like I said, instead of capping it it Banbury a 25 got put on the front and it ran to Brum at least with the rat with the 73's revived and running back south from Banbury soon after the 25 departure.

    Halcyon days indeed.

The footplate haulage I've had at Banbury include 20,25,37,45,40,47 and 5o and how I miss those days.

    Cheers

    Dave

The booked return for the 33 off the FO Portsmouth-Leeds was a southbound freightliner the following day, Saturday.

Don't have the exact working to hand sorry.

  10. I feel a bit like a school boy questioning Shakespeare but I will ask anyway.

Would you be better off sticking the stones to a flexible bottom layer so that when you come to apply the wall to the scenery you can mould the wall into the contours?

    John

That wall is looking pretty damn good Jeff, and despite your predicted man hours of building they will look top notch I am sure.

Re Johns comment, I sort of agree here, but surely the flexible base would actually need to be moulded to the contour first and its profile held whilst the stones are then glued on (at least the first two layers at any rate) ?

I cannot see you bending a wall with that amount of glue used in its construction now matter how flexible the base may be, surely if you try to bend a glued and dried wall it is going to snap rather than bend ?

Also agree about the painting, if the das could be dyed first it is going to help no end.

    Keep at it.

    Scott
