Alun, yes some sort of track diagram would be most helpful!
bigd, At West Blyth sometimes a Class 37 would propel a BV to the lower yard sidings to collect empties, the loco would stop short of a point switched for a short siding with a slight incline, the BV would be uncoupled and the loco would give it a hard push and stop at the point, the BV would run up the siding and the guard would apply the brake. When the loco was coupled to the empties the train would draw forward just past the point then the guard would release the BV brakes and the van would simply gravitate down to the rear of the train at which point it was coupled up to the last wagon then off to the colliery, often Lynemouth Colliery.
