The colour of ballast on the far north line is an unusual one, it's actually pink granite. For modelling I'd go for a light brown, light grey mix rather than a pack that says pink granite and try to pick shades which are warmer in tone. Can't wait to see this layout finished, I spent part of my childhood living in Helmsdale and have fond memories of 37/4's under power reverberating through the valley as they headed north. Carl

If you look at early 56's which have had replacement cabs you'll notice the difference. The power of the 56's published by OPC is a good starting point;- lots of good side and front shots. I wouldn't say you're a heathen, I think its just a shame you'd be happy to settle for that and pay in excess of £100 RRP! If it was £50 RRP pitched like a Hornby "railroad" range model, then maybe. But then again I don't run Dapol. Way, way, off topic, it raises an interesting question. I've detailed N gauge rolling stock and exhibited a layout in the past, partly for my own satisfaction, to entertain modellers and public alike, but also to demonstrate it's possible to create realism and atmosphere in N. I'm beginning to think the latter is somewhat academic. Is it a wasted effort? Particularly when I see more poor N layouts than good to be blunt. It's made me think about the next modelling project. You are absolutely right. I noticed at the time of the pre production models were shown but felt if I flagged it up at the time, I'd be met with cries of "its' ok from 6 foot away." and the like Looks like the 56 has been a victim of cost cutting and if costs for tooling were an issue why not do the most numerous version of the class - and do it properly. Having said that, I've heard people say they'd be happy for Dapol's proposed 59 to be a 66 in appropriate liveries ! So perhaps Dapol know what they're doing and the market they're aiming for. If only every N gauge loco Dapol did was as good as the 22. Such a shame. If only we were flies on the wall's of Colin Allbright's or David Jones' office right now.... Carl

Agreed Mike, the grass and flowers in the field being particularly pleasing. I can almost hear murmuring of bird song in the background, it feels like a real place.

Nice shot of 47018, I like the chipped paint around the windows. I remember seeing it on a speedlink at Tinsley yard one night and immediately behind it in the train was a deltic, 55015 Tulyar. That was 25 years ago! I've gone slightly faint... Carl

I like the 47, something a bit different. Only 3 locos were painted in that livery I believe, the other two were a pair of 20's. Respray project?...

I forgot to mention our layout (if it's of any interest or help) appeared in the November 1997 Railway modeller. I would post some pics we took on here but they're all packed in boxes! Carl

It has plans of the Midland Railway buildings and a good account of the history the route. No shots of 37/5's though..I made a model in N with my Dad around 20 years ago inspired by the route and the book. It was set in late 80's and had a quarry. He couldn't have made a lot of the buildings without it. Sounds like a bargain Cav! Peak rail may be a good place to ask for info too if you haven't already. Carl

Wow! The second picture down of the ingsoc logo on the building is excellent. Sums it all up for me. The look and feel of the layout is very evocative of the novel. Incidentally,1984 is the best novel I've ever read, its' really like a picture in words.The writing is so vivid and rich. You've certainly done justice to it.

I love the shot of 45052 at night, remember seeing it as a kid at Tinsley with my Dad. It's so atmospheric you can almost hear it ticking over. Carl

I'm no expert, but from what I've learned talking to people about 3D printing, the reason why you get a rough printed side has a lot to do with the orientation of the drawing in the file. Basically, if you put what you want it to look "good" you have to put it on a certain axis (I don't know which) so it will print smooth (or less rough at least depending on the shape.). 3D printing is still an evolving technology, having a perfectly blemish free print won't happen just yet. It looks like it won't be too far away though, especially when you consider how much its' come on in the last few years. Even so the quality does vary between the producers but this maybe down to the use of different printers and/or materials. Shapeways from the sounds of it could have handled your complaint better and at least try to explain why. Hope this helps from my limited knowledge. Carl
