  1. The proximity of the bridge is also a problem. If the signal were slightly further back it would be dangerous in steam days for the Fireman to carry out Rule 55. In the real world the signal would probably have been on the approach side of the viaduct. Also the Civil Engineers weren't keen on lots of hot water running down through their track into the masonry. The position of the ground signal looks about right, although a lot were moved to the cess side in later days. This box diagram from Watery Lane pre-electrification shows some good examples of positioning http://www.signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=206
  2. I don't know. Last 4 up have all sold, last new BIN for more than that.
  3. The ground signal should be a scale 6 feet from the joint at the toe of the points. The main signal would be at the same place if the line were not track circuited. About the time that BCB is set there was an instruction regarding the position of clearance joints. To put it simply the joint would be 16' back from the toe of the points and the main signal would be at least 6' further back, so 22' from the toe of the points. Regarding the ground signal, it should be set so that the top is a maximum of 3' 4' above rail level. IIRC the 3-arm disc was designed to fit the available space in the 6-foot.
  4. I have bought from Amanda in the past. Accuracy of headings and descriptions is not her strong point but the coach matched the photo. The price was OK for me but would probably have fetched more with a good description.
  5. Likewise, I was only about 30min from Warrington yesterday so called there as I had a couple of hours to spare between other things I had to do
  6. That was the one that came with the Hornby Mixed Freight set. Edit: would normally go for about £30
  7. Jason I am mightily impressed by your windows having produced 3 windows comprising 42 panes by that method recently I can only marvel at the mill. Eric
  8. Looking good, unfortunately I won't see it this weekend but hope to catch up with it at Stafford next year. Good luck for the show. Eric
  9. Having sat on both sides of the fence at consultations and disciplinary matters I would say join the union even if you don't take much of an active part in it most of the time. I was in the TSSA for about 35 years. I was a Staff Rep for both P&T and Management grades at various times. As a group we were able to improve grading of various jobs in our sphere and change the direction of some illogical reorganisations. When later I was managing a large number of staff I had to put them through the mill at times and they normally requested a union rep be present. As long as the parties treated each other with a mutual respect there was usually a sensible outcome where the Management side were satisfied with the outcome and the Union side felt that they had done some good for their members.
  10. If you're in the car, Warren Kerfoot at Compstall Mill between Romiley and Marple Bridge usually has a few interesting things. A fair number of my wagons have come from rebuilds of his second hand stock.
  11. I was looking more at the price, thinking I might put one or two on to fund some bits for conversion of a couple more.
  12. Hachette anyone? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK1-BR-SK-COACH-CORRIDOR-SECOND-MAROON-COMPATIBLE-Bachmann-AND-Hornby-/131013171099?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item1e80fe579b
  13. The photo on ebay certainly doesn't look like Toboldlygo's usual offerings, but it could well have been what the present owner wanted.

  15. Possibly after I sent him a copy of Andy Y's post with the message from Bachmann about its parentage.
  16. Looking at the fit of that jacket reminds me of when I recruited a man who was 6'10" tall. The BR clothing system rejected the order for his hi-vis waterproofs and overalls as the computer automatically regarded anything over 6'6" as an input error.

  19. Why, when were are in the middle of trying to have a reasoned discussion, do two people have to start a personal and private slanging match in mid-thread?

  20. I seem to remember a tale about a senior manager on the Eastern Region who after a lively trip behind a 9F on an express issued an edict that speed in mph was to be limited to the driving wheel diameter in inches. He rapidly backed down when told in that case Mallard could not exceed 80mph.
  21. We got rid of most of the pole routes round there in the blue/ early TOPS era, so its probably the locals made off with the signalling cable. It would be a good excuse for not having any working signals.
