  1. It's funny how different the BR (and NSE) livery looks without the yellow ends. Did this present a problem running on the mainline? As an aside his come London Underground trains don't have yellow ends, even the ones that run above ground?
  2. So excited to try out my new NCE Powercab. Then I discovered it has a US plug. ######

adapt an international adaptor to fit (it's cheaper than buying a new transformer)

I just need to acquire the adaptor first!

  4. I rather like the plan with the high level terminus and circle underneath. It would make a perfect home for Thomas and his friends. It would also be easy to turn it into something more prototypical as the child grew up. Depending on what Father Christmas brings my son tomorrow(!) I might even give it a go.
  5. So it would seem the main problem is that their DCC bus isn't powerful enough and they should have added more droppers at the Lymington end. Instead they chose the option of relying on rail joiners at the mainline end. Like countless modellers they will learn that cutting corners only leads to hassle later!!
  6. We got my 3yr a Hornby Thomas set for his birthday, and have added a few more wagons and sidings. I had forgotten just how much fun sitting on the playroom floor running Thomas and a few wagons around was. We have even made a tunnel and a hill out of shoeboxes. MrsJ has remarked more than once that it always works first time unlike my fancy detailed scenic, still under construction, layout! Playing Thomas is the perfect tonic when I get stressed by yet another short circuit or dodgy point motor!

  11. Every silver lining has a cloud! MrsJ has just offered to relocate my layout from the cold garage to the box room. But it's 8inch too long! I can't start again can I.......?

As long as it doesn't interfere with your modelling.

My Mrs would complain about an extra 8"...... stop, just don't go there

  12. As Michael Winner would have said 'calm down dear'. All said and done its a toy train coach, on which the painting is slightly wrong. It was a mistake, they have apparently owned up to. We all make mistakes - but no one died!! I suspect many people will still buy them as for a lot of people they look roughly right. For others a discount NQP would be great to slightly modify the buffers, number or branding. Ultimately worse things happen at sea
  13. Just send me a PM with your email and I'll try to scan and send them this weekend.
  14. There are some very useful drawings of the PRAs in the book 'Modelling the BR era' - let me know if they would be helpful. I know not many were made, they were used on the Ponts Mill to Scotland traffic - I have a photo of them over Rannoch moor! I think there was something about the consistency of the clay from Ponts Mill that meant they used these wagons.
  15. That Tiger wagon looks superb. I could do with a couple for my layout so your build tips have been very helpful. Are the transfers a special order for you or are they avaliable to anyone?
  16. That point is going to look very impressive. I only wish I had the skill and patience to do 2fs - the trackwork looks so much better than Peco N gauge. I do like the idea of you later building St Blazey - together they would look very impressive, and give fascinating operation. Of course you'd need to build the line under the bridge to Par Harbour as well...... On holiday to St Ives this year I was rather taken by St Erth and quite fancy building it one day. If someone else does Lostwithiel one day we could have an exhibition of virtually the whole Cornish line!
  17. I can't believe I've only just found this thread somehow! I've really enjoyed reading through this thread - a very good and inspirational layout. Mind you I agree with the others that a backdating to the 80s would be good......I spent many trips home from university going through Banbury, and with its old infrastructure, signals and boxes it was a highlight of the journey, This captures it very well, and is another layout shwoing how good modern N gauge is, especially if you want to run full length trains. I'm also considering moving to DCC for my N gauge layout - and tips or hints? What decoders have you used? Do you control the whole layout including points with DCC? Sorry for so many questions! If it ever heads north to an exhibition I'll try to have a look.
  18. I'm not sure why I haven't commented on this before, because I have just spent a very enjoyable lunch hour reading through it! I also have a soft spot for the 80s in the West Country, and a model of Par is one of my one-day dreams! This looks really good. The 2fs looks so much better than the Peco track (I'm writing this having just completed track laying with Peco!!) - I look forward to seeing it come together. It really shows the benefit of 2mm, full length trains and HSTs in a sensible space. Do you have any more details on how you raised the bogie frames on the 37 - it make a big improvement and looks easier than lowering the bodyshell?
  19. Latest gem from my 3yr old pushing his Brio Thomas forwards and backwards 'I'm just testing. This point is dodgy. I think it must be wired wrong'! I don't know where he gets it from......

  23. Any possibility of any of the shows being slightly further north than Padstow!!! Would be great to see it and Creedyford. Especially if you back date it to the 80s. I think it's a cracking layout, really captures that elusive 'atmosphere' of clay country in a fairly small space.
  24. Do you think SWMBO will notice the baseboard is a 'little' longer than previous?
