Little things - for the layout outside the railway fence

Mind you for weeks we have had a road closed in the centre of the town. There was a sign saying Diversion and pointing to the left (correctly) and just to its left a sign saying "End of diversion".

Jonathan

I think we can match that.  There is a 7.5t weight limit on the river bridge at the bottom of my hill .  There is also a 7.5t weight limit in the town center.  The diversion route for lorries to avoid the bridge is signed around the outskirts of the town until it reaches a cross roads, where it stops, with a final sign pointing down into the town center!

I too have seen a few of those signs over the years, and not noticed that feature.

Here is one at Bath without weights.

It is interesting that much of the text is in lower case. The vast majority of similar cast iron official railway signage seems to be all upper case. For example, of all the No Trespassing signs I’ve seen, only the LBSCR ones have used lower case.

I am sure we have had an example of these wall mounted cranes before, but can't find it at the moment.

So here is an example on a barn wall of a farm near Kingham.  Not been used for over 30 years so far as I know.

I've never seen one anything like as lightweight as that - presumably because it only had to lift comparatively light bales of hay or straw.  What I particularly like about it is that it ought to be quite easy to fabricate a model of one from scrap etch, unlike the more substantial industrial types which need either casting facilities or the skill and equipment needed for 3D printing.

Some way back up thread there was a request for pictures of gated roads.  I provided one of a rather beaten up old gate.  Here is another, with a more classy newish gate that has not been hit by a tractor yet.

I am afraid that I am not going to attempt to model the individual flowers in 4 mm.

Seriously, it is a challenge to model such scenes. The kind of wild flowers we often see by the roadside can be only about 1/2 inch diameter, so in 4 mm/ft about 1/6 mm. So only a very small spot of paint, if that. Any thoughts?

I am sure the would manage it at Pendon.

Me and Mrs Rivercider had a short break in Bideford last week, I noticed that since my last visit there the old warehouse building across the road from the hotel had been demolished, the whole quayside having been cleared for housing I understand. I did wonder if a significant structure like this might have been included in the development.

It reminded me that we should try to record things while they are still there.

Well done for photographing it.

I am surprised it wasn't listed.

Have you ever noticed that once a semi derelict building becomes listed, it also becomes highly flammable?

There's an art deco factory right near us that's been derelict and dripping wet for a few decades and yesterday the fire brigade were in attendance.

I'm sure that will help push through some developers plan to flatten it. It would make very nice apartments or workshops as it is.

Well, lots of the architects' visualisations of the new development you can find Online;ine show the building is to be retained as part of the development, including the wonderful "I. Baker & Son" sign in your photo. If it has actually been demolished, @MrWolf's cynicism seems well justified.

Thanks for posting the photo - I am collecting ideas for characterful buildings for my one-day project, Netherport.

Like MrWolf and magmouse it did cross my mind that something like that happened to the building.

Edit - the Brunswick Wharf re-development plan does say that the Baker & Son plaque will be incorporated into one of the new  buildings, which is something I suppose.

Here are photos of the site which is right across the road from the Royal Hotel, which is actually in East-the-Water across the river from Bideford.

Looking across the river from Bideford to Brunswick Wharf, the building stood  opposite the right hand end of Royal Hotel, on the corner at the end of the Long Bridge. 22/5/2022

IMG_1713.JPG.0a214a07395d23d3b37204cb9dc8e147.JPGLooking east along Brunswick Quay, only a small pile of demolition rubble remains.

For a railway context the light grey building in the distance is a Doctors Surgery, this and the sheltered housing estate beyond it stands on the site of the original terminus station in Bideford. When the line was extended to Torrington the old station then became the goods yard, closing in about 1965.

On a cheerier note from our visit to Bideford and the surrounding area here are a couple of smaller buildings we saw when we visited the gardens at nearby Tapeley Park.

Thanks for the extra pictures. It seems like the visualisations were designed to make the casual observer (me!) think the old building would be retained, when actually they are just keeping the sign. It will be interesting to see if that actually happens.

Agree. I passed four families on the canal and one pair on the rifer the other day between here and Berriew (about 9 miles).

But goslings in 4 mm are a tad small.

Do you also need a pike searching for a gosling for lunch?

A few boring photo's of an area of wasteland behind some offices in Essex! I like these photo's as it shows weathered timber, groundwork and the size and way the cable drums have been left. Also the back of the fence, bracing and junk. It's a pity I didn't have my camera so I could get a clearer picture of the junk in the corner.

For some reason, this site is rejecting my photos as being too large. Which is strange, because they've been the same size since I joined rmweb two years ago.

Each time I post, it let me upload less photos.

Now it won't permit any, not even those I posted before the great crash.

Makes a change from getting "Unknown server error" three attempts out of four though!

Here is something I have not seen quite like this before

946595435_Outside3.jpg.367b6d1073e4f20a9c4ab3b69269027c.jpg

As I walked into Woolacoombe on the far side of the valley was a cut path to little white houses.......

1670000006_Outside4.jpg.a2673728fac94e5264aa6e0ea78ea0c3.jpg

.....full of bees.

I am sure I have seen bee hives before but not quite in this setting.
