A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

I am aware of the fact that GEC crates weren't used till the late '60s , thanks @St Enodocbut I have family connections working for them so a lot of modelling licence is required, please forgive me.

My grandfather did his apprenticeship with BTH at Leicester starting around 1919/20 he became a development engineer and spent a lot of time traveling back and forth to Rugby, by the mid 30s he was liaising with Marconi on projects connected with radar. This meant his application for military service in WWII was refused and he continued until work declined postwar and set up his own business in 1948.

I've still got the enamel identity badge from his overalls with his check number engraved in the back.

When I get home I'll get a picture of it.

Good morning GWR type folk, been a while since I've snuck a photo of Polsarrett onto this thread, and those posted since June will all have gone AWOL.

Somewhere I have also seen a Peter Gray photo of the Torbay Express loco, complete with headboard, on a goods train.

Presumably it is the same photo as the one appearing on the front cover of Transport Treasury's "Western Region Non-Passenger Trains" book.........

Random book picked from my west country library and spotted a different shot and in colour. p29 Peter Gray's West Country Railways.

In the 1950's the King on the CRE came off at Newton and was coupled up to the following 10.35 which as often King hauled, as well. The headboard was usually reversed for the double headed King haul to Plymouth, but not always.

I've recently been trialling the Elite Hunt couplings on various stock with a mixture of the ultra close and close on wagons to just the close type on longer vans etc. Here's my short parcels with Hall class 5998 Trevor Hall doing the honours. The two Hornby Gresley full brakes have Hunt's fitted between them here. I'm not sure I'd convert all my stock but they work out cheaper than Kadee 18/19s overall. It will be interesting how the new Accurascale siphon g fits in here. You can also buy adaptors to use on older rtr stock and maybe kit built stuff too which I'm investigating.

I've been using Hunts for a while Rob and while they do have the very occasional issue I'm very pleased. Look out for the odd magnet coming loose - easily fixed with the glue of your choice - and the occasional bit of fettling required to fit the NEM pocket.  I'm convinced that Hunt couplings saved me from being taken away by men in white coats such was the frustration with tension locks.

I'm still using tension locks on goods stock but as 75% of my wagons are kit built I have greater control over mounting. All engines are Hunt fitted and I have a few 'adaptor vehicles' for use on goods trains. I'm planning on experimenting with the Kean systems DCC uncoupling system on one or two vehicles for the odd wagon pick up etc but don't hold your breath!
