And in C3731, of Chatham, with a down passenger train also on the 18th March, 1978, you have captured a great, sweeping view of the hilly nature of the place, which is beautifully replicated in the next two photo’s, C3732, and C3056.

Those look to be taken from the edge of the "Great Lines", i.e. defensive lines for Chatham Dockyard, developed in the Napoleonic era, and taking advantage of the lie of the land.

I'm more used to pics of 2 x 20s on the Skeggy Expresses so 2 x 25 is more interesting - and the lead loco is still in 2-tone green.

Some Talyllyn Railway photos at Tywyn Wharf and Tywyn Pendre from 1969 and 1970.  It was rather different then.

I think that must be the late David Ratcliffe driving Sir Haydn.  He was one of only two volunteer drivers at the time and also drove on the Bluebell.  On the right is Irish Pete (the basis of no. 7 Tom Rolt).  Not sure what the agricultural implement is doing there, though...

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Radcliffe on Trent on the Grantham to Nottingham line. In C2519, with a class 31, on a bulk grain train, in October, 1975, it can be seen that the letters and numbers in the four character headcode box are looking somewhat askew.

That’s a superb selection of photo’s of the Talyllyn Railway, at Tywyn Wharf and Tywyn Pendre, from 1969 and 1970. In the last photo’ at Tywyn Pendre, with number 2, Dolgoch, on the 31st August, 1969, that is a delightful shot of the engine as it works the train into the station.

The photo’s from France with some trains at Marclaz, on the 4th August, 1978, are excellent and so atmospheric, showing the French scenery the line traverses perfectly. In C3987, with unit X43xx, on a service from Evian les Bains, it is an excellently composed shot, and the driver seems to have his left hand out of the cabside window.

Finally, the photo’s of the Midland north of Leeds are a delightful set, with J0861, at Horton, with an ex-LMS class 5, 44824, on a down mineral train, in April, 1967, the Black 5 is blasting the train through the station.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Back to England in the 1960s with some photos on the Midland north of Leeds.  The last two photos are meant to show the same loco and train.

David

Another very evocative set of photos from 1967 - this thread never fails to get the nostalgia going - great photos as well - J0907 shows a class 108 in what appears to have been Doncaster Works’ initial and apparently unique interpretation of blue livery with a large(r) yellow warning panel!!

There’s another thread in prototype questions asking about the use of large locos on pick up goods and the 8F shows a good example - fabulous weathering as well. I think the LMR used these for this purpose quite often (or more likely any loco available) - I saw 8Fs in the Birmingham area in use on such trips in the early 60s, including one in a siding dropping a few wagons at a water softening plant and one at a colliery (Hamstead) collecting a few wagons.

Some lovely images, again. Thanks, David.

I thought that I'd try and identify the class 25s, in C2255, for you - given that you dated the image. Unfortunately, RailGenArchive doesn't have any record of 1Z86. However, I tried www.class25.info, where one of the locomotives is identified as 25 102 - given that that was the former D5252 and one of the later design, where the bodysides had been tidied up by the omission of the bodyside grilles (D5233 onwards, barring the Darlington-built locos, IIRC), that must be the green loco, leading. Amusingly, the record is credit to one David Ford (with a hyperlink to the same image in your Flickr album)!   🤣

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Carlisle, and the last photo’ of Bruff rail road recovery vehicle , on the 1st September, 1987, is an excellent side shot of a vehicle which is not often photographed.

The photo’s of Norton Bridge, from May, 1976, are a excellent selection, and in J5241, with an unidentified class 85, on a down express passenger train, is a superb view of an 85 in service complete with the cast double arrows on the bodyside. In J5243, of 47345, on a down coal train, that’s an excellent three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive, and the distinctive finish of the cab windows can be clearly seen.

That’s a delightful set of black and white photo’s of Bulwell and Bagthorpe, on the GC. Firstly, they are appearing correctly in black and white, so assigning them all an sRGB profile is working perfectly.
In JVol1176, at Bulwell Common Junction, with LNER, K3, 1975, on an Annesley to Bulwell Dido working for workmen, in 1947, you can see a fairly rare sight of a K3 working tender first.

The photo’s of Pilmoor, from 1967 and 1968 are a superb set, with J1060, of an unidentified class 20, working in the up direction, on the down fast line, removing a damaged cement wagon, in August, 1967, after the derailment and collision which involved DP2, and lead to it’s withdrawal, being of historical interest. Thank you for posting it.
The last photo’ of two class 40’s, D273 and 240, in green and blue liveries respectively, on an up goods train in April, 1968, is a sight not too often seen of a train double headed by two 40’s.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Some black and white photos of Dad's now for a change.  They date from around 1947 to 1952, the very early ones suffer from poor film as it was very hard to obtain just after the war and a not brilliant camera - sadly I don't have a note of what Dad used for many of his early black and white photos.

I have assigned each of them a sRGB profile so they should look black and white not red!

I lived in and around Nottingham until I was 16 and after that visited until the early 1980s.  Having looked at Google Earth I think I would find it very difficult to find most of these locations now.

You can imagine the inside of those houses were probably as cold as outside apart from the living room, (where the fire was). No insulation in the rooves.

Burnt paint due to excess air being drawn into the smokebox through a badly distorted door seal or a build up of ash.

Chatham and Rochester are also riddled with tunnels linking the forts, as we discovered when we lived in Rochester and were digging in our back garden in search of a leaky drain and discovered a tunnel from Fort Pitt to Fort Clarence running right next to the foundations; a tunnel which because of its sensitive nature at the time the property was built did not appear on the deeds. We sold up pdq, I can tell you.
