RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2019 I would dilute it with around 25% thinners mate. Regards Lez.
sb67
I tend to go down the Chris Nevard route, greys, browns and beige emulsion test pots from a DIY store and I might thin them with a bit of water and washing up liquid and mix them on the board as I'm painting, I also try not to go too dark with the colours. BobM
Evening Guys.....Hope all are well and 'braced for a potentially wintry impact' during next week....? Here is the result of this evenings hour or so on Cambrian Street, as always please comment, advise, criticise, chastise and guide as we are all learning hopefully from my foray into this layout...! The white out that the applied DAS clay had created has been toned down with the initial application of a thinned mix of dark earth / black and is drying to await (further instruction) and additional colouring / weathering.......so far okay....? This is the base colour to be used..... I am minded at this stage, that whilst additional weathering is undertaken, I will in tandem with this, add further DAS clay to the remaining areas of the goods open yard and tracks through it, the initial weathering completed here applied to these areas as they are done, the whole yard then being 'finished off' when comfortable with the results as one job so that the whole area blends in and doesn't look like a patchwork quilt...? As there is 'diddly squat' on the TV (as always) and it is sleet and snowy outside....I may go and formulate another 'white out' on the layout....? Regards as always...... Bob but 'spring is on it's way' too...however the actual temperatures pan out, the visible, natural and inexorable upward trend is there once more now as the sun gains strength as it climbs higher in the sky ....eh...? BobM
Hi.... Have begun the process of applying further DAS clay into the adjacent track.....work in progress...! Regards always..... Bob
BobM
Evening guys...... Hope all's well......? Have applied further DAS clay to the goods yard....... I have a feeling that when (hopefully) complete....Cambrian Street Goods Yard is going to have a very 'lived in' appearance.....? Here are a few further images of the 'state of play' at the moment...... ............will tone down the white on these areas when set..... and just to confirm that movement can still take place through the goods yard.......... Regards always..... Bob The latest three runs of the model, the forecast charts have really 'backed off' on the incursion of very cold weather next week, fingers crossed,,,!
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2019 Nice Bob but it all needs a lot more colour on it mate. Regards Lez.
BobM
Hi Lez.... Hope all are okay....? Yep....building up this area slowly, adding the DAS then preliminary colouring to take off the whiteness, then hopefully colour it up as I go along........in your opinion a little grey toning too? Regards always.... Bob
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2019 Stick with brown and black for now mate, maybe add a little red too it but save the grey/brown shades to tie it all in at the end. Regards Lez.
BobM
Hi...... An update on this evening's DAS'ing on the wider top section of the goods yard....one further smaller area to do and within the 4'.....then will weather up the white resultant surface..... will take the weathering slowly to obtain the correct tones..... Regards always..... Bob
steaming_chris
Hi Bob, I'm following your topic with great interest. In Chris Nevard's article I seem to remember that he stippled the surface with a short haired stiff brush, have you done the same thing. Keep up the great work. Regards,
BobM
Hi Chris...... Thank you for the kind comments......this is very much a learning curve for me..... I have tried to stipple the applied clay, but it seems only to compress it for some reason.....I have added a bit sand to the clay to rough up the texture in compensation..... We'll see how this all pans out.... Regards always..... Bob Edited January 21, 2019 by BobM
BobM
Evenin' All..... Have 'completed' the DAS clay application across the intended goods yard and await this to dry sufficiently to add to the base colour....... The three small square areas that remain 'open' are the cranks for the wire in tube crossover point control..... I have the intention to 'cover' these with either (GWR) huts or a grounded coach (or similar infrastructure), permitting their operation but concealing each position...? Coal bin and water tower for stable pilot loco perhaps....? Unless there's any other suggestions....? Regards always..... RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 21, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2019 Sounds like a plan Bob. Regards Lez.
sb67
Maybe a small platelayers hut and some junk, old sleepers etc would look good there. Steve.
BobM
Evening Guys....... Whilst this remains a 'work in progress'.....have spent an hour or so applying a further wash to the existing and now dry 'wash' of dark earth / black and added to it a covering across the applied DAS clay, the total 'white out' subsequently eradicated...... I don't want to get this too dark just yet, but seems that further work to remove the 'white base' will be required before applying any grey tones perhaps...? The upper area of the yard has hopefully a somewhat flatter surface, indicative I hope, of my intention to highlight the area which may attract a greater amount of 'footfall' (compacted ash) around any wagons...... The images are appearing somewhat lighter in tone than in 'real life', maybe the camera resolution...will see how it dries out... .................. whilst the 'throats' of the sidings / pilot loco siding are a little rougher / ballasted in appearance....? Regards always..... Bob Edited January 22, 2019 by BobM
danstercivicman
I think you can go a lot darker Bob with the washes but that’s just my take
BobM
Hi.... Cheers Dan..... Yep although the camera is making this look a bit lighter than it is on the layout itself..... I think the next applied wash will have a greater proportion of black, together with a less thinned density to darken it further and we'll see what result ensues eh...? Regards always...... BobM
Evening Guys..... Hope all are okay, and that this mornings snow (if you copped it as we did) ....wasn't too troublesome for you? Have done another hour or so on the goods yard this evening....this time I have taken a leap of faith in myself and really upped the ante on the colour of the wash applied to the surface, darkening it markedly........ Whilst I have all the faith in the Chris Nevard method of mixing ballasting and DAS clay as a surface, I have to say that I have made 'better friends' with artex as a medium for such surfaces......also the images I have seen and his recommended colours for toning the ash surface, seemed much too light in nature for such a mucky area within a goods yard, especially for what I had in mind for a decaying, run down and ripe for closure, urban goods yard,,,,,,? .......here are a few images of the results of this evenings darker hues applied to the surface, will let it dry completely and perhaps if okay. then dry brush lighter tones over the surface...... I am content with this darker colour....hope it looks better....... Regards always.... Bob Edited January 23, 2019 by BobM

BobM
Hi Guys......One further and final update for this evening before I turn in for the night...... .......Just looked and although a great deal darker in tone than previously.....the surface is drying lighter again possible a camouflage grey-brown colour now...so may require darkening further...... will see tomorrow how it completely dries out before deciding......possibly drier brushing grey tones....any suggestions....? Regards always..... Bob Edited January 23, 2019 by BobM
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted January 23, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2019 Yeh make it darker Bob. Regards Lez.
BobM
Used to ask .... 'Are we there yet dad'...? Well, not quite........ .......still remains a way to go yet, but I hope 'we' are getting there...(sound like British Rail now...).....? Comments guys....? Further dry brushing....lighter colour tones perhaps now.....? The 4' requires work too As an observation.....DAS clay seems to soak up the paint markedly.....whether I am thinning the wash too much, this the causal effect...but the clay also shows through if brushed....dabbing the paint on seems to work better for coverage.... Regards always..... Bob Edited January 24, 2019 by BobM
sb67
That's getting there Bob, I'd go for a bit of random drybrushing, maybe a slightly darker wash where loco's stand. I found the DAS soaks up paint if it's too thin too, what paint are you using? I go with test pots from the DIY stores. Steve. Just using ordinary Revel / Humbrol enamel paint....I am probably over thinning, so will dry brush from now on and build up where necessary... Regards always.... BobM
Hi Guys..... All well I hope.....? Posting this with great trepidation....! 'In for a penny' and all that......have begun to really add grime to the goods yard floor, the thought being that this is urban not rural.... used grey enamel and weathering powders....to add tone to the flat grey applied and to mark the oily/ grimey loco holding / standing areas....... I really don't know how this is going to end....I don't want to 'muck up' in all ways.....especially overdo things....so have halted, to see how this initial stage dries out and to post images (as good as I can take) and a video for your constructive or 'deconstructive' comments which I would as always greatly appreciate..... Here goes.....! Ignore the goods shed, which is only positioned where a new and different colour one will sit, this was a cast off for trial use.....also the hut and coal bin are also there for positioning purposes....... Further work to be done..... Regards always.... Bob Edited January 25, 2019 by BobM
