Now that I've given the raw information about the Hornby 2011 announcements I'd like to give a personal perspective on this; something I rarely do.

Firstly let me say I think there are some excellent announcements in there, although a Brighton Belle is very unlikely to appear on a layout I make I think it's bang on the money as an iconic offering that will have excellent shelf appeal and is sure to sell fast and quick. I applaud the investment in the carriage and wagon front and hope that the Gresley suburbans sell well enough to motivate Hornby to produce other suburban stock at a future time.

I think loco drive upgrades to the 4Fs and 2Ps in particular are good news and complementary competition within a stengthening S&DJR sector and widens the scope for modellers with that interest.

Aside from the Belle I'm not even particularly concerned that there's no other significant D&E announcements as this sector has seen truly spectacular announcements over the last year that Hornby could never hope to steal any thunder from no matter how hard they tried.

Whilst sitting down and working through the list I became increasingly saddened and frustrated with a personal perception of an undercurrent of opportunism and negative competition that does not benefit the buyer, modeller, retailer or longer term investment in the hobby.

Why Tornado? Of course it's a commercial opportunity but a perfectly good product already exists from Bachmann and let's not forget that Bachmann have made donations to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust along the way; I've not seen mention of similar support in Hornby's announcement. I could accept that the Railroad edition would have a place in the market but not the Special Edition version or the Train Pack with its long-toothed Mark 1s. I do balance this with the view that the average 'Tornado' buyer is probably more likely to be a red box buyer than a blue one but is that reason enough? I'm sure the investment in this would have been equally returned with any number of other opportunities so I'm only left thinking that this product is designed to impact upon a Bachmann sale.

Why the B1? Sure, the Bachmann split-chassis product has been around longer than some of the modellers that have bought it and is a well-sweated asset and the market may welcome it but wasn't there many other L&NE opprtunities to have taken up? I'm sure Bachmann would have upgraded the chassis at least on this in due course even though the old product still sits in their current range as it's been a steady programme over the last few years and there should be some consideration of grandfather rights, similar to the awaited new tooling of the B17 in Hornby's favour.

Why that Warship? I shouldn't even have to question why an old and inferior product merits a place in the range other than to maximise the return from a bought asset; if that's the case surely the old Lima Western would have been a better product to have chosen unless the duplication of products with inferior items is being carefully targeted? The Bachmann/Mainline product may have its roots in a product announced some 30 years ago but it's still better than this.

Why the 20T brake? There's plenty of other brake vans that could have been chosen admittedly with less widespread usage, I hope that the product is better than Bachmann's to allay my compounding frustration at these choices but will it represent comparable or justifiable pricing?

There is another one that can be added to the list but I can't tell you what that is yet I'm afraid.

I don't have a problem where two new and competing models are on the timetable such as the 4MTs a couple of years ago as this gives choice and benefit; each only has themselves to blame if they don't take the poundnotes. I don't have a problem with other assets being wrung to within an inch of their commercial life at all but this seems to me to be a tactic to impact on a competitor's retail sales where the opportunity exists. Not only does this mean reduced choice tomorrow as the investment needed in all of the above could have brought new and different products to the marketplace (insert your personal disappointmet of choice) but if this trend continues (it's been evident before with such things as the Lima 66) it only serves to frustrate the logical choices for upgrade within a manufacturers range. The financial benefits of such upgrades are marginal enough from a commercial perspective for any manufacturer without degradation of the quality available in the marketplace through a competitor's activities.

I'm far from naive in commercial realities but this, in my view, has gone a step too far. Hornby are astute enough in their marketing strategies to use the Royal Mail, Barry Freeman, Pete Waterman etc in a bid to widen the market appeal of an offering so I don't think it's necessary to resort to negative competition.

Thinking back to last July when Bachmann were within days of announcing the Blue Pullman there was mention of a Railroad Blue Pullman (after being told for countless years that the tooling was beyond use). What was that all about then? Given the timing I don't think it had much to do with the stillborn Olivias/Heljan project. Don't get me wrong, my concerns would have been exponentially higher if we had seen a Railroad BP announced and thankfully that is not the case as of today. I sincerely hope that we don't have that spectre looming next Christmas

So, are Hornby's announcements for 2011 good news? Yes and No.

Excellent presentation as always Andy. The Belle is right up my street, so looks like an expensive year. I think the decisions made have been excellent, not only from a modellers point of view, but also from a commercial point of view. I can see why they have done Tornado, due to certain not so specialised shops i.e Toys R Us, Argos, Hobbycraft etc. being able to exploit the PR machine that is Tornado.

Any more on the Skaledale range or is it just the Modern Traction Depot.

Happy Christmas Everyone.

Funny, wasn't aware the Great Western Main Line had been electrified already!!! Presumably that should be First Scotrail!

BR InterCity (Executive) Mk2 Open First

BR InterCity (Executive) Mk2 Std. Open

BR InterCity (Executive) Mk2. Brake Std.

Looks over at his newly completed (as in the paint is still a bit wet) rake of repainted AirCon Mk2's and bangs head on desk in pure frustration!!

I do not ruddy believe it!!!

Gresley full brake looks good though and needless to say I will be requiring a GatEx Class 73. Is that Horsebox reheated Lima?

Just noticed on the Hornby website that we at last have it confirmed that the NSE Vep will be refurbished and the blue one unrefurbished. No blue and grey though which surprises me, that will be snapped up as a money grabbing Ltd Edition by one of the retailers I fear.

I'm speechless. Totally broken, frankly. On the one hand - great for a lot of things. But doing a Peppercorn A1 model, just for Tornado, and the B1s?

Can't say I understand either of those.

But the Gresley Suburban coaches - answered the pleas at last. Finally, something for those L1s to pull!!! :D :D :D

Well, as a bit of an S&DJR nut, I'm happy to finally see the loco drive 2Ps and 4Fs, and the 390-399 Maunsell low window as a set :yahoo_mini:

The Brighton Belle is welcome and I may get one as a special if funds allow.

The B1 and Tornado seem to be strange duplications. I have to admit to being somewhat puzzled regarding them. :scratch_one-s_head_mini:

I'll take the rest in over the next few days as it's (as always) a fairly long list to fully absorb.

Some interesting releases and whilst they are of little interest to me (luckily) you do point ot some serious problems...

Firstly, is Hornby ineffect trying to declare a retail war on Bachmann? Wars do no-one any good and there will be a loser, and on an international scale Hornby are the underdogs.

Secondly, I am glad that seemingly for the first time  they have listened to the constant cries for suburbans!

I go along with the Tornado saga and needless duplication. Plastic RTR is going somewhat astray here. On a purely personal view, I am glad to see the Compound and D49, Railroad Range or not. They are the basis of a good model with some additional modelling.

Non-corridor coaches I did suspect. Can't say why, it was a feeling after I did some in RTR brass this year. But I thought they would be LMS or LNER Thompson, not Gresley. I sincerely hope Hornby makes a better job of them than they did of the corridor Gresleys.

I must say, I do like the look of the NMT.

But, like Andy and several others, I do not understand why Tornado, and the B1 are to be produced. And by the looks of things, I don't like the look of the Hornby Tornado over the Bachmann one, so that's the one for me!

Merry Christmas all!

Some interesting points there Andy.

I recall saying that last year was A D&E disappointment and i feel the same this year. Whilst there are some welcome reliveries.

Hornby have of late produced some excellent Diesel locos and they have missed a chance to update ( to current standards) a loco that has appeared in a huge number of liveries - namely a class 73. I can see this being grabbed by either Dapol or Bachmann this year.

The B1, Gresley BG and Loco Drive D49 are good news for me. The A1 is quite shattering in it's pointlessness but I guess the bean counters have decieded it's a commercially sound idea. Limby 31 - Good / Limby Warship - rubbish. It's great to see suburban stock too although it's of limited interest to me as I'm building an MPD layout.

I'm with you Andy on your thoughts.

It will be intreasting to see what in reality we get I'm the shops and what gets carried over to 2012 as 20 ish models from this year.

Also with the looming VAT increase, what things may not make it at all.

Nothing to excite me in that list

cheers

Ooohh the D49s (Yorkshire for me, what else!), new B1s & Midland compounds in the Railroad range! I was right about the Q1 coming back, me being right about something I'm shocked! I'm surprised not only at Tornado but also the re-tooling of the LNER/BR brakevan. A move to the LNER is starting to look like a reality! :D I might be heading to an expensive year

I'm surprised that if the've tooled up to do Tornado, they're not doing any other A1s - although I am aware there are a number of differences between Tornado and the earliers A1s, surely this could have been accomodated? It really seems like a crass attempt to cash in, especially as there seems to be no support for the trust - at least with Bachmann you knew that part of your purchase prices was going to support the loco.

Good for the non-corridor Gresleys, and some of the other rolling stock. Suprised that the Maunsells havnt had more outings, as they seem to be in short supply, at least in BR(S) livery.
