That'll get stuck on Bridport ;)

Probably won't fit in the engine shed...

Dave I've been a fan of your models for years, evers ince I saw 'Charmouth' in the Railway Modeller. Have spent a very enjoyable time catching up on this thread. Please do keep up the amazing work.

Thanks very much Corbs, that's very encouraging.

In response to the question, here's a photo of the "austerity" side of the van, having received a touch of weathering.  The "weathering" basically consisted of running some diluted dirty black paint into the various crevices.

And it hardly shows...

And at the risk of over-egging the pudding; please allow me one more shot of the liveried side.

I've gone back to cream colour for the ventilators instead of varnished, but kept the droplights in the varnished finish.

I'll shut up about the van now....

Dave.

Time to get back to some narrow-gauge modelling at last.

Before I continue with the construction of the new Hunslets, I decided that the old 4-4-0 was decidedly looking its age and needed a bit of TLC.

Never having been totally happy with the Malachite Green livery (looks great on Bullied Pacifics, but not on much else) I played around with the colour-change in Photoshop.

Here is the existing livery:

Changing to Isle of Man Indian Red:

Isle of Man "Ailsa" Green:

The one I like the most though is dark green:

I believe this is a very early Isle of Man livery, and No.13 Kissack now looks very swish in this colour; see here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G8Pcf9rlJA   and in this photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/130436742@N03/34068806624/in/album-72157659943354346/  taken from this page of wonderful photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/130436742@N03/albums/72157659943354346/page2/  and at Douglas here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/trained_4_life/34221559036/

So the malachite is history.

Cheers, Dave.

A little bit of upgrading will be taking place at the same time, to correct earlier mistakes and shortcuts.

First off, a set of clackvalves, courtesy of Alan Gibson Workshop.  Simply fitted to a hole in the boilerside, and a splitpin to support the pipe.

A riveted smokebox wrapper was a must. I had always regretted not doing it to begin with.

Again its fairly simple, a riveted strip, slightly overlong was first annealed to soften it and then curved to fit (bit of trial and error needed here)  Once a good shape was achieved, its Araldited to the smokebox leaving enough depth for the new front to fit inside it.  I usually hold it in the the fingers while the Araldite hardens, so you can keep checking to make sure it hasn't slid.  The I clamped it while it went off fully.

A new front was cut and filed to shape, and a line of rivets added around the edge.

Its always good to get some practical work done on a model, instead of just talking about it!

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave, ever thought about using a blue; I do like the look of the Hornby Peckett or the BR blue as worn by 6023 at the moment, maybe the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway blue?

Hi Bryan,

Funny you should say that!

Dark blue looks magnificent on the Somerset and Dorset, but I didn't really like it on the Hunslet.  No sure it would work with the coach livery either.

All the best, Dave.

Some magnificent modelling here, well done! River Char looks remarkably like a narrow gaufe adams radial tank, a truly handsome loco

Thanks very much.

The Adams radial is one of my favourite SG locos; and in my opinion, William Adams designed for the LSWR some the the most elegant locos ever to run in Britain

For what it is worth, I don't think that the blue looks right. Too much of a contrast with the livery on the other locos and coaches. The darker green works best. Also, the red suits the tram-way line, so two liveries one for the 'main line' the other for the 'tram-way'.

Good job that you have bolted assembly, makes life much easier for the upgrades!

Thanks Mudders, I knew it would come in handy!

I've added a couple of ventilation hatches to the rather plain cab roof.  Simple squares and strips of black plasticard, fixed to the painted roof with Mek.

A waft of matt black spray should cover it all.

I've always been aware of the empty yawning space between the frames of this model, where the valvegear should be.  So with it in bits, I'm making up some dummy gear to go in so you can't see the sleepers.

326714910_IMG_1413small.jpg.e8dbcf3b76278ce1341f2fe05e327ac5.jpg

Firstly I soldered up a rough impression of Stephensons pattern gear, two opposite assemblies put together flat to keep them symmetrical.

They can be fairly rough as they don't have to work, and won't be seen very easily.

Cheers, Dave.

It's amazing the little dodges that you never notice but their creator is bugged by ;)

I'm going to have to try to remember to look for the valve gear now.

Nooooo !

Got the valvegear a bit more three-dimensional now, fixed to a chunk of whitemetal that clips to the loco frame.

Still a few bits to add, rocking levers at the front for instance.

The Don Townsley drawing showed the top of the cylinders and valverods above the footplate; with the rods being driven by rocking levers in slots through the footplate.

I had left this feature off in the original build, and decided it was too much work to add it now.  So the valverods will remain between the frames, whether this is prototypically possible or not!

Cheers, Dave.

The valvegear assembly is finished.  OK, it looks like nothing on earth when sitting on the bench, but does look a bit more effective on the model!

Well I THINK the painting is done on this one.  I lost count of the coats I've given it from the Railmatch spraycan, many Railmatch paints seem to be a bit on the thin side to me.

Anyway I think its ok, shan't do any more until its fully hard.  Here are the four main body components standing together.

I see I've put a dusty fingerprint on the tank, but it will brush off...

Cheers, Dave.

Procrastination time.

I really need now to get on with the lining, but first I thought I would put it together for a quick photo in my favoured photographic position; Charmouth goods-yard.

I think it looks ok:

998246978_IMG_1444small.jpg.c10be981d2221a390fe05cd1a16b9f3c.jpg

Been trying out some lining combinations, and I want to have a black border to the panels.  The first one is LMS loco-lining, black and pale yellow:

1351919162_IMG_1452small.jpg.472d00760243001e1540fa3a1de16b5c.jpg

But I think my preference is for black border with orange line.  The lining is GWR Loco, orange-black-orange, with one orange line painted out (yes I know you can still see it...)

Using GW lining I can give it scalloped corners as well.

697756627_IMG_1448small.jpg.1d4ce3cfb0e73f92b9b3738df7c6d7d4.jpg

This is close to one of my favourite liveries, the last L&B pre-Southern finish, see here:  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/68054-lynton-barnstaple-oo9-loco-from-Heljan/page-12

Cheers, Dave.
