PhilMortimer
Looks uncannily simmilar to my workbench. I find it far more efficient when it is like this as I don't keep having to stop and find things as I know it's all on the bench somewhere. Plus i don't have to unpack and pack things away before and after each session. Time saved, etc. Of course, right now I can't find the BG topfeed casting i put on the bench last night. I know it's on there somewhere......
bigbadbadge
HI Dave Hope you are well, wow the coaching stock looks great and the new Hunslet looks amazing too, great work, I wish I had your scratchbuilding skills. I have been away for a bit and recently have been packing up all possessions nearly for a loft conversion which is now underway, although currently without heating and insulation so very cold, will be worth it though. Keep up the fabulous work. All the bestChris

RMweb Premium DLT Posted November 10, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 10, 2016 (edited) Right, I think the pony-trucks are sorted at last, after much trial and error. I've taken them apart and modified them at least three times. Photo shows the rear truck from above. The pickup wires to the wheels backs are 15thou Nickel-Silver wire. The two strip wipers sticking up are Phosphor-Bronze strip which bear on another piece of PCB on the underside of a frame-spacer The two cuts in the PCB create an electrically dead centre area where the pivot is located, and the forward extension over the axle is the bearing plate for the spring. The underside of the chassis shows the PCB attached to the frame spacer, on which the Phos-Bronze bears to transfer power from the truck. The 8ba screw is the pivot point, and the wire is the centralising/downward spring. Two views from above show the pony-truck attached, with the centralising/downward spring in place. This setup achieves pickup on all eight wheels, and the springing gives lovely smooth running with the trucks "steering" the loco through curves. So far so good! Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted December 28, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2016 Work has restarted on the Hunslet, hoping to get it at least looking like a loco in time for Shepton. Dug out my GW.Models Riveter for the bufferbeams (headstocks?) Photos when there's something to see. Cheers, Dave.
bigbadbadge
Hi Dave The work and workmanship on the chassis so far is fantastic., This is all quite inspirational and I have found myself thinking about scratching a loco one day. Although will have to finish the loft conversion first to keep SWMBO happy, I could see her being quite miffed if I showed her a chassis after supposed progress on the house !!! Keep up the great work All the bestChris
RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 1, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) Had a session on the GW models riviter (a rivet-counting control-freak's dream!) and made up some bufferbeams for the new Hunslet: Now got to workout where the coupling slot should be. Cheers, Dave. Edited September 8, 2022 by DLT
RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 13, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 13, 2017 (edited) A bit more of the intermittent progress to report; buffer beams are sorted, and fitted to the footplate using 2mm x 2mm brass angle. The block that the couplings are mounted on adds extra strength. Many years ago I made a number of parts for future Hunslet locos and they've been packed away in a box ever since. The smokebox and boiler tube were part of this hoard, and initially they looked like this: I've added a wrapper consisting of a strip of 10thou brass riveted along both edges, curved around a piece of steel bar and matched to the smokebox with a LOT of trail and error. It was fixed in place with Araldite Rapid, and held in the fingers while it set. The front plate was simple cut and filed to shape to fit inside the wrapper and riveted round the edge. Chimney and smokebox door also came from the set of parts packed away; however the chimney looks a little small for this loco to me, so I might have to find something else. Cheers for now, Dave. John M
Very nice. Reminds me of some of the work on the recent overhaul of WHHR Russell including the fabrication of riveted buffer beams and tanks.

Yes indeed, the many photos of Russell available on the web have been of great assistance. Cheers, Dave.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 13, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 13, 2017 (edited) Flitting about a bit at the mo, with exhibitions looming. A while ago i was talking about altering my carriage livery by taking the cream colour lower on the bodywork; well its happening. The old brake-compo has been done: And the all-thirds are under way: In addition, another order to the Broad Gauge Society has brought some more superb new lamptops; this time in cast-brass: These will be fitted to the Harbour Tramway coaches, being distinctly different to the whitemetal examples on the MV stock Cheers, Dave. PenrithBeacon
Had a session on the GW models riviter (a rivet-counting control-freak's dream!) and made up some bufferbeams for the new Hunslet ... Like that! I have a GW riveter which I shall need to dust off shortly. May I ask which of the punches you used for your bufferbeam? It will act as a guide for me. I used the 7mm scale anvil for the bufferbeam rivets, and will probably use the 4mm one for the smaller rivets in the cab and tanks. Best of luck! Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 16, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) While all this coach repainting was going on I took a look at the old Passenger Brake Van. It had got very tatty so it seemed a good time to sort it out. The end panelling was never right so I've redone some of it, and the whole van will get a repaint. In addition the coach-ends had never been fitted with steps and handrails, so I need to sort that out as well. Hmm, the "to-do" list seems to be getting longer rather than shorter... Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 16, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) Painting the coaches is finished. Class designations on the doors have been added, from the HMRS LSWR Coach transfer sheet. Just a bit of varnish needed on the new bits now. Work on the PBV is continuing. Cheers, Dave. bigbadbadge
Very nice Dave, the coaches are coming on and looking fabulous. The smokebox work with the riveter again looks lovely. Great work. All the bestChris
RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 19, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2017 (edited) Thanks very much Chris, I'm very pleased with the coaches. I must call a halt, as I could go in touching up the paintwork for ever. I've wanted to make this change for a while, but somehow it never reached the top of the to-do list. The PBV is progressing. I've brush-painted the cream panels (with Humbrol "Ivory") and applied Maskol before I attempt the framework. That's enough for tonight. Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 20, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2017 (edited) Painted with BR Maroon, and now carefully peeling off the Maskol: Looks a right mess at the moment, but I'm sure it will clean up. At last its beginning to to look as I intended. Mabex transfers for the MVR lettering; these are water-slide so I cut them as close to the letter as possible and fixed them with varnish (satin, Humbrol) Door labeling is from the HMRS LSWR Coach sheet. Please don't look too closely at the paintwork in these awful close-ups, I can see several places that STILL need cleaning/touching up. Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 23, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) Well I think the colourful side is finished at last! The vehicles all still need end steps and handrails etc for the unfortunate staff to get on the roof to access the lights. But for now here is the van: The all-third coach: And both together: All the best, Dave. Edited September 8, 2022 by DLT
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted January 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2017 So with the management flush with cash to fund these renovations might they afford some paint finally for the Fairlie Sorry couldn't resist
laurenceb
IIRC a coat of paint for the Fairlie would be yerrry expensive!!

RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 23, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2017 With thoughts of finishing these coaches, please can anyone recommend a supplier of end-steps, for the staff to access the roof? I could scratchbuild them, but its not a tempting prospect! Thanks very much, Dave.
