RMweb Premium DLT Posted April 12, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 12, 2016 Thanks for all the comments and "likes" Folks, I'm concluding the work on Boadicea, before I make a hash of it! I'm starting to upgrade my first coach-build from many years ago, having long abandoned it as inferior to the later models. Cheers, Dave.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted April 16, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 16, 2016 (edited) The Marshwood Vale coaching stock is closely based on prototypes from the Manx Northern Railway; and having recently decided that I need another Brake/Composite I dug out the first coach I built. I had long abandoned it as inferior to the later models, due to the rather heavy panelling, it's less than flexible Cleminson chassis, and its banana-shaped roof. Rather than building a completely new one it I thought I would have a go at smartening it up. First to go was the crude interior, and most of the windows fell out with handling. The new first class seats are made from a piece of wood moulding left over from the Roxey kit described earlier. The thirds have plan wooden benches, made from the finest planked plasticard that Slaters produce; approx 1mm planks. Interiors are not super-detailed, as you can't see them that well once the roof is on. On the MNR these particular coaches (there were two) were built as composites, with two 1st saloons and two 3rd compartments. Early on they were converted to brake/composites in order to run one-coach trains. One of the 3rds was converted to a Guards compartments, and one of the 1st saloons downgraded to 3rd, and this is the condition I've modeled. My seating arrangement isn't quite correct, but its something like it. That's all for tonight, Cheers, Dave. rockershovel
I do like pictures of this layout, they really capture the essence of a minor line for me..
RMweb Premium DLT Posted April 18, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2016 (edited) Well I think I've managed to save the roof. I got rid of the banana-shape by cutting slots across the 40thou base that the roof was built on (making flexible) and with it held flat I glued another sheet of 40thou to it. This should stop it returning to its curved shape and keep it flat. The edges had got a bit wavy in this process, so I glued everything back together and held the edge in the bending bars to keep it straight while it all dried. And bingo, one straight roof (for now!) with the addition of new rainstrips. That's all for now, Dave. Edited September 8, 2022 by DLT
RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 3, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2016 This upgrading is taking far longer than I intended, could probably have built a new one in the time... Nearly finished though, must be ready for Thursday. Dave.

RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 3, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) Its finished enough to be photographed on the layout. I've modified the brake end by blocking up the compartment windows and adding an extra window in the end. It really ought to have duckets fitted, but not this time. There is still more to do, steps and handrails on the end for instance, and I've found some lovely lamptop castings from the Broad Gauge Society to replace the rather plain brass turnings on all the coaches. Still odd touch-ups of paint needed here and there, and some weathering. And of course the other side. The panelling does look over heavy when next to the other coaches, but will probably pass muster when running on the layout. Maybe I'm being too critical. Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted May 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 4, 2016 Very nice Dave. I have toyed with following your lead on Pencarrow and having different sides of a vehicle in different liveries to enable two periods to be modelled. I think it works well with coaches and wagons but saw a problem with locos. My O2 for instance would be BR black on one side and a Southern green on the other. Can't see how that would work on the bolier, cab front and rear... Back to the drawing board!

RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 12, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 12, 2016 (edited) I've been doodling in Photoshop to see if my coaches look better with cream panels below the windows; Dammit, I think I prefer the second one. Its called "making a rod for your own back" as I now need to repaint my coaching stock..... Dave.... Edited September 8, 2022 by DLT
RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 12, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 12, 2016 The livery was originally inspired by the Letterkenny & Burtonport Extension Railway coaches, See this Garden Rail thread: http://www.gardenrailwayclub.com/carriage-wagon/lough-swilly-coaches-and-liveries
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted May 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 12, 2016 Difficult, I like the original but that might be just the lettering helping
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted May 13, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 13, 2016 Having had another look in the cold light of day this morning I think I actually prefer the original version with less white. Somehow it looks more real, less chocolate box. As Paul says, it could just be the lack of lettering.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted May 15, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 15, 2016 (edited) I'm still not completely happy with the brake-compo, so just by way of contrast here is an all-third showing the finer finish of the paneling. Please don't look at the dust..... Looking back, I think I should have built a new coach instead of trying to upgrade the old one. Dave. It would certainly stand out in a crowd! There is a precedent. The Foxdale coach (discussed earlier) spent a period as The Marquis of Ailsa's camping-coach, during which it was painted a rather bright "fairground" style livery of light blue & yellow. See Here Cheers, Dave. Edited September 8, 2022 by DLT
