RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted October 2, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2013 I was wondering what are people's favourite railway artists or particular railway paintings? Or paintings that they own themselves?
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 2, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) When, earlier this year, I saw the picture which appears at bottom right on the cover view below I was absolutely knocked out by it - incredible atmosphere and the following day after a bit of haggling over the price Mrs Stationmaster duly bought it for me as a belated birthday present. It really needs to be reframed which I've not yet had done so it isn't hung as yet - but it's mine and I like it! Incidentally the bloke walking alongside the train is modelled on a photo of James Dean - who was probably never in Ireland! durham light infantry
The Guild of Railway Artists are exhibiting at Locomotion until the 6th. Some excellent paintings to be seen. Mike
shortliner
Can I recommend a Google search for Samuel Michlap, who paints US railroad and urban scenes, and fantasy/concept scenes for films amongst others - great use of light, and technical ability - one of his has been my desktop pic for a couple of years! His day-job is a production designer for Dreamworks Edited October 2, 2013 by shortliner
trisonic
My Dad was an early fan of Cuneo. As an artist his accomplishments were derided in the mainstream. Idiots! Johnny Gringo (and probably a lot more of RMWeb) are members of the Guild - they are all too modest... Best, Pete.
Catkins
Certainly Terence Cuneo, but I like any good railway art. I just don't have the money or space for anything myself.
Class 74
This summer I bought a fantastic book by this guy: http://www.philipdhawkins.co.uk/ Amazing paintings! Simon
jwealleans
Quick plug for Chris Pulham, wife of a longstanding member (and friend) who was recently accepted into the Guild. Some of her work here. Edited October 3, 2013 by jwealleans
Ceptic
Along with Terence Cuneo, another favourite artist, Eric Bottomley. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=eric+bottomley&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=MkhNUqT9HMq60wWBkIGwAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1360&bih=643&dpr=
backofanenvelope
Pretty much any railway poster from the 1930' onwards but specially the LNER ones
10800
Pissarro and Monet could colour in quite well. http://www.artandarchitecture.org.uk/fourpaintings/pissarro/art/railways_art.html
10800
And don't forget photographers - O Winston Link and Colin Gifford for starters!
coachmann
Phil Hawkins and Eric bottomley are my favourite railway artists as their draughtmanship is spot on when it comes to steam locos. George Herion was my teenage favourite, whose style I immitated... Edited October 3, 2013 by coachmann
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 3, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2013 Malcolm Root: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=malcolm+root&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:%7Breferrer:source?%7D&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ilRNUvf_BuGd0QWOhIBw&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1440&bih=775&dpr=1 I've been lucky each year with a present from my local village shopkeeper of a Midlands engineering company's calendar with his paintings on each sheet. I've kept them all with a view to framing the best one day!
Adrian
John S Gibb is one of my favourites, a pencil artist but the tones and textures he creates are superb. Some of the little cameos of passengers at stations are brilliantly observed. I've a couple of his non-railway paintings because I loved the way he drew the figures. avonside1563
We have a railway artist amongst our ranks, Old Gringo has produced many railway based works including the illustrations for the 'Peter's Railway' series of books. He also has a range of greetings and christmas cards available (example below). John - I hope you don't mind my posting this here?
westcountryman
David Shepard captures the atmosphere so well, as does Terence Cuneo. I guess I'm just a sucker for traditional art, but each to their own.

Unknown Warrior
I like the work of Colin Wright. He has just completed a painting of "The Unknown Warrior" for me. The image is going to be used by the LMS-Patriot Project and will be launched at Warley, where "The Unknown Warrior" will be the center piece in its current build state. We will have both Colin's original paintings of "The Unknown Warrior" on the stand. A rare opportunity to see both paintings and the real "Unknown Warrior" together! Come along and have a look, talk to Colin who is due to be there for the weekend and perhaps buy a print in aid of the project!
Giles
Eric Bottomly does light so well - we have a very nice S&D 2-10-0 hauling goods in the snow by him in the living room and it's a pleasure..... (And he's a delightful chap as well....)

APOLLO
This is a good site, many artists including John Harrison http://www.railart.co.uk/print-shop/product_info.php?products_id=111 This is one of Johns, "Wet day at Wigan". RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted October 3, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2013 For the GWR fans, are there any specific pieces that you love? Anything by Don Breckon or Barry Freeman gets my seal of approval.Summer at Saltern Cove for example.
Fenman
For the GWR fans, are there any specific pieces that you love? Not a GWR fan myself, but surely the granddaddy of all railway paintings is Turner's Rain Steam and Speed? I like Monet's railway paintings. Hugely atmospheric.
