Leeds trams 4mm layout and fleet

Trick cyclists, or my adventures with Magnorail.........

As per the last entry, I purchased a Magnorail starter kit (new cliche warning, every layout needs a working cyclist or two!). Not having had that much spare time recently I've eventually made a start.   On opening the box it quickly became apparent that a retro fit might not be the easiest, the Magnorail track being approx 6.8mm deep. So I decided to make a sub board to get the track all up an running before hacking into the boards were it will end up being fitted.   In the box there is

Leeds 600, detail pics at Tramway Museum Society's Clay Cross store.

Today I managed to visit the TMS store at Clay Cross, this is located in the former Midland Railway Goods shed near Clay Cross junction.     Purpose of the visit was to get some info and detail pics of Leeds 600, for a preserved vehicle, pictures of 600 are quite few and far between, I'd particularly been struggling to find any info on the boxes on the roof, interior and the rear of the advert boards. So a few pics for posterity.               Big thank you to all who ma

Fitting Halling motor bogies.

I'm sure your all fed up with me espousing the virtues of Halling motor bogies, the one problem being how to actually fit them to the item you want to motorise. The vario units normally fit the Halling trams by small clips on the main body of the drive, the tram truck being made of flexible plastic.   So, thinking cap on and I came up with this....         It's a basic cradle made of 80 thou plasticard that can bolt up into the tram body, so easy removeable for access to the lower d

Trying Redutex textures.....

I'd seen various articles and mentions on here about the Redutex self adhesive textures and thought they might be worth a play with to see what they were like, each to their own but I just can't get on with brickpapers so I thought these might be a bit of a half way house having the relief of plastic/plasticard and the self coloured nature of printed papers.   So a sample was ordered from modeltextures.co.uk (usual disclaimer) I went for the Flemish bond brick with dark mortar in the coloured

Is it a bird, is it a plane? No it's Supertram!

Sorry couldn't resist that title....   Anyway something modern image......I don't do post 1950s, so what's all this then....       No I'm not doing Sheffield post 2000, nor will I be trying to run one on Grime Street......

More work to the Sheffield Supertram CAD

A bit more done to the Supertram CAD, there's a couple of little bits to sort on the body (front rubber bumper is one) but the bodf is nearly there now.   Chassis and articulation is next to be sorted, but that's more 'modelling' than copying the prototype.   Few more pics

Some more festival pics and a little modelling update...

Contrary to the previous pics 'Grime Street' wasn't the only layout at the Festival of..., Paul kindly sent over a few pics of some of the other layouts     Sealane Sunderland trams in 7mm     Sealane Sunderland 48     Greg Marsden's superb Stockport 20, 3/4" scale     Stocport Water Car by Greg Marsden again.     Pete Whiteley's illuminated Blackpool Western Train     illuminated Hovertram     Foxwood Park by Gordon Bulmer as in RM recently.   Video showing

Sheffield Supertram first test print.........

Few photos of the test print of Sheffield Supertram project, done in WSF as I knew there was a few things to sort in the CAD but wanted something physical to show at the Sheffield Bus, Tram and Train Show next weekend.   Not the finished article by a long stretch, one error from the drawings had been picked up before and another one since so hopefully the final version should be spot on...   Anyway some pics

I Materialise Prime Grey SLA Great Central Long Car

First model from Belgium arrived about an hour ago, thought I'd share it with you....... Pics                   Overall, very very happy, there is some stepping on the curved front section, but that's very easily solved, detail and smoothness, very good, quick turn around, and excellent support over models that might need a bit of attention before printing, I'll be using them a lot in future, admittedly you have to spend 100 euros for free shiping but for me it's worth

Leeds Snowblade 7

Having recently got my hands on a Tramalan Snow sweeper model and having one of the snow ploughs available, thoughts have turned to possibly exhibiting Grime Street in a winter mode, we'll see..........   So if that plan does happen, I fully intend to build one of the weirdest looking trams ever to grace the streets of Leeds (and probably any other UK city)   Snow Blade 7     Picture courtesy of Andy Bailey and used with permission   Snow Blade 7 was Chamberlain Car 83 with one platfo

Some modelling and a few gratuitous trolleybus pics.

What's going on, two entries in less than a week! Mention was made of the modded PC trams chassis for a Corgi Feltham, so here it is in primer     And with the Corgi body fitted     The general idea behind this is to do with the proposed resin body kit for LCC1/Leeds 301 which if all goes to plan (yeah, right!) would feature an r-t-r chassis using the PC/Halling chassis as a base unit but with platforms/stairs/doors/bulkheads/controllers etc, basically fit lifeguards, bogie sides etc a

Shapeways Middleton Bogie arrives.....................

The nice man from UPS brought me a package from the Netherlands today, You've seen the CAD on the previous entry so here's the printed Middleton Bogie, this is done in the white detail rather than the white strong flexible, twice the price (ish) but worth it I think.           reaction.....................well chuffed!

Leeds Works car 6 in it's 1950s decrepit state....

Just a few shots of works car 6 in a heavily weathered state, many don't like weathered trams, but most of mine have it in some form, the works cars in Leeds in the 1950s were certainly not pristine and the model reflects it.   Built from an ABS kit with a Halling drive with a plasticard cradle for the drive, bow collector bis .45mm nickel silver wire pivoting in a .5mm brass tube. Weathering done with powders. washes and dry brushing.

I don't fancy your chances in the tour de France...........

Or messing with the Magnorail cyclist.   Having assembled the Magnorail cyclist, which is fiddly but not hard (legs clip together and go on to pegs retained by the upper body, feet onto the clear wheel which clips into the bike) and tried out a card road surface with a thin wash of plaster (to paint consistency) here's a quick video of a test, the jerky motion is because I'm pulling the chain rather than using the motor   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve2I_6YRVTg   Well it works!   Will

Leeds 600, more on resin and kits.....

As mentioned in the last entry Leeds 600 was one of the next cars I fancied building, so what's Leeds 600 most RMwebers go? This is Leeds 600   picture from wikipedia and used and credited as such   It was a 1950's rebuild of an earlier Sunderland single decker, though how much was retained is debateable, it still exists but as it is at the Tramway Museum Societies Clay Cross storage facility it's currently not accessable.   So armed with plasticard, plastruct, solvent, filler, photos an

Some real modelling..........

Enough of the computer generated stuff, as time permits I've been continuing work on the extension to Grime Street here's a few pics,     Overall shot showing the entrance to the coal yard and the corner building frontage.     Coal yard office and retaining wall in early stages     The beginning of the corner building, frontage is from an altered Walthers Merchants Row II, I'll build the remaining parts and pitched roof etc, the unit has been cut and altered to suit the available

Festival of Tramway Modelling.......

Last Saturday and Sunday saw 'Grime Street' at the Festival of Tramway modelling show in Manchester, this featured tram models from 3/4" scale down to 'N' gauge. Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos, the camera was stashed in my stock box all weekend. However Paul (PLD) has sent me a few over.....phew!   Saturday was pretty busy all day long, fortunately I had a guest operator (I was on my own otherwise), taking time out from the cockpit of the 'Stealth Bomber' Paul found 'Grime Street' a

Revised Middleton Bogie SLA model.

A distinct lack of modelling time at the moment as 'real' work seems to have taken over all my spare time!   One thing that has moved forward though is the 3d Middleton bogie, the first revised models have arrived from Belgium and they are far superior in detail to the original.   This is the model as received       And this is it after a little work     Work undertaken so far includes smoothing the steps in the roof, I Materialise have pretty much sorted out how these models ar

Leeds Pivotal/Chamberlain Car Prime Grey SLA models arrives

A large box containing lots of goodies arrived courtesy of UPS this afternoon, amongst them the first of the resin SLA Leeds Pivotal Cars, a few pics             Overall. delighted with this one, I'd say all the detail in the CAD has printed well, so it's fully detailed, the only visible stepping is on the roof, which is dead easy to smooth and sort out, I can honestly say that I think 'traditional' trams are going to 'print' really well in this method using the same orientation.

Sheffield Supertram CAD update.

More work on the Supertram project, roof detail now done, some of this is a bit OTT and probably won't print, but I want to see what we can actually get away with before deleting anything.   Anyway pics               Couple of minor mods to do to the body and that'll be then done, running gear for chassis and fitment pretty much sorted using Halling bogie that'll clip in, so coming together nicely, Vinyl graphics are pretty much likely too.

Smoothing Shapeways White Strong Flexible....

As I'm still waiting (end of next week at the earliest) the frosted ultra detail print of Leeds 301 http://www.shapeways.../frosted_detail apparently demand on this material is massive at the moment, to the point of Shapeways buying extra machines! I thought I'd smooth out the bumpy WSF model, if the FUD doesn't work at least I'll have this one done. Quite simply done with filler primer and wet and dry down to 2000 grade finally finishing off with Farecla G4 rubbing compound, think I've got it

Grimsby and Immingham...........

As mentioned in previous enties I've alwas fancied modelling the Grimsby and Immingham tramway and the associated Grimsby and district light railway. I did make an abortive attempt some time ago http://www.rmweb.co....h__1#entry59456 however to make a resonable sized fleet was going to take a fair bit of scratchbuilding and I do tend to get fed up after one of anything.   With my move into 3d printed models this became much more viable, so here's the first render of an ex-Gateshead car, obvi

Mr Pilcher's finest

Very little modelling time at the moment, so a long time since an update and it's not really that much of one either!   The CAD shown in the previous entry has been worked on and is nearing completion, several tweaks to do yet but here's some more pics.             Mr Pilcher's finest? No it's not Mr Pilcher the forum member, it's R.S. Pilcher who was General Manager of the Manchester Corporation Transport Dept in the 1930s and the tram shown was his 'Pullman' car, which becam

Blackpool Coronation Tram.......

Just a quick update on the Blackpool Coronation CAD, nearly done now, one minor amendment to attend to but pretty much there........             Huge amounts going on with Grime St, including sawing it in half, I'll update it with a load of pics just prior to the Beamish exhibition early April.....
