RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted February 26, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2020 (edited) Well look at the time! Here we are at the end of February, and not a thing done. The start of the year is always chaos at work for me, as we always seem to get dragged into ambitious projects. Anyway, some sanity is returning, and I've dragged my mojo kicking and screaming into the daylight. Ladmanlow has been invited to attend the SWAG event in April, and so I have an urgent need to bring it up to scratch. As a tentative step back into modelling, I have therefore bought a Hornby 20T Brake Van. Here it is look, all shiny and new: But this is of no use to the Cromford and High Peak Railway, as it stands. It needs to have had 30 years of work and be falling to bits, before it can be considered for adoption. Luckily, I have a time machine, so here we are 30 years later: There, that's more like it. It needs lamps, of course, which I will have to go and dig out from the cobweb infested shed at the end of the yard. Thanks for looking, Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) With a week to go to the virtual SWAG exhibition, and realising belatedly that I shall need to produce some pictures and video for the occasion, I've started to make Ladmanlow more exhibitable, with the addition of a couple of ends, and a proper fiddleyard / traverser type thingy. So the first thing I did was to add some patternmaker's dowels to the ends of the layout: And then some over-center latches: Then I made the blank end for the righthand side of the layout: and test fitted it: Then, for the lefthand end, I started to put together the framework for a fiddleyard / traverser. I haven't quite decided what it will be, as it depends if I can get a traverser to work with just what I have here at home. If I can't, it will be a fiddleyard with the hand of god much in evidence. More soon, Thanks for looking, Al. Edited February 5, 2023 by Alister_G smelling and grandma 12
Andrew P
I wondered where you'd been hiding mate, glad to LS is still a work in progress and should be good with a decent Fiddle Yard as well. STAY SAFE MATE.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2020 Cheers Andy, hope you and Dee are OK. I'm now working from home, but confusingly that's increased my workload enormously, so I've not been able to take time to do any modelling for ages. But I thought I should make the effort for virtual SWAG. Look after yourself mate, Al. 3 1
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 19, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) So this morning I carried on with the fiddleyard. I decided that I hadn't got the bits available to make a traverser, so instead I completed the framework with a solid top, and did some preliminary painting. Then, I decided to put a back on it, so I can hide electrical gubbins like extension leads, power supplies and so on behind it, yet still make them accessible without grovelling under the layout. I also painted the blank end for the other side: Then, I left it all to dry, and went to cook Sunday dinner. This evening, with everything dried, I attached the two ends to the layout, first the blank end on the right: Then the new fiddleyard: Here's the whole thing (nearly): Interesting how the backscene for Bakewell looks behind Ladmanlow! I cut some C&L flexi to length, and positioned it on the fiddleyard: and checked the alignment: Then it was time for some glueage: And some groceries: And that's where we are at tonight. I will add two more tracks in the fiddleyard tomorrow to hold stock, then I'll start wiring it up and testing. Thanks for looking. Al. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 20, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20, 2020 Interesting groceries: wood glue, car polish and an unidentifiable grey tin. Hope you didn't make Sunday lunch from any of these!
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 20, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20, 2020 The unidentified grey lump is a roll of roofing lead - very useful for wagon weights etc. Not something to add to Sunday lunch, though... Al. 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 20, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 20, 2020 (edited) This working from home lark at least means I can sneak the odd five minutes in the cellar whilst waiting for firewall rules to deploy, and other such joys. So the groceries were removed this morning, leaving the main fiddleyard track all stuck down: and nicely aligned. It looks out of gauge here, but isn't in fact, and a test wagon rolls smoothly across the join. A bit more glueage followed: and that was then left until dinner time. After lunch, the groceries were removed, to let it dry in peace: and at mid-afternoon the third piece of track was layed, so by tea-time I had this: You may notice above that I added a strategically placed lip on the end of the board, to save those excruciating tinkling and crunching sounds when your pride and joy runs off the end: It also provides a nice platform to rest the camera on: That's all for now, more later maybe. Thanks for looking, Al. Edited February 5, 2023 by Alister_G replaced images 9
RMweb Premium Bogie Posted April 21, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2020 Can I take it that use of the cellar for modelling is because you are now using the kitchen table for the consumption of the various meals mentioned in your posts? If so, what has prompted this conventional use of the kitchen table? I can't imagine with social isolation the daughter is entertaining.

Hi Bogie, no, use of the cellar is necessary because Cawdor Quarry is still occupying the kitchen table. Sadly no such return to convention exists...
