It could have been worse - you could have modelled it as broken down!

I finally plucked up the courage to weather the Peckett. I know that sounds stupid, but it almost feels like sacrilege to dirty up a brand new model.

I didn't want to overdo it, either, it's not going to be as dirty as a Cromford and High Peak loco, but it wants to look used.

So here we are:

We've done a lot of looking at scenery and buildings, but there hasn't been much railway action on this thread for a while, so let's address that, shall we?

An early morning trip to Sainsbury's car park for a photoshoot beckons?

Mike.

It's a shame, but there's so much stuff in Sainsbury's that you can't get a feel of the quarry anymore, but I do know a couple of old quarries where that might be an option.

I did a quick and dirty weathering of the Hornby Tar wagon. It's not really very good, but it will only ever be in the background:

At least it doesn't look so plasticky and toy like.

This evening though, I concentrated on filling in the tracks in the yard. I used strips of 60thou styrene sheet, sprayed with grey primer, and then stone dust rubbed in as I did with the rest of the yard.  I wasn't sure that it would work, but actually I'm quite pleased with the result:

The curved rear siding is going to be a bit more of a challenge, and I'm not sure whether to use the same technique, or try something else.

Finally, a couple of experimental shots from a different viewpoint:

Top Banana!

I like how you’ve filled in the trackage, very effective, it definitely looks like a quarry!

I haven't had a lot of time for modelling this week, but tonight, I've attacked a new purchase.

wdg225001.jpg.4da445fbc06a9040740da4fd6ebe5dde.jpg

I managed to buy a Corgi Trackside Ruston-Bucyrus shovel secondhand for under a tenner, and then instead of keeping in clean and pristine in it's box, I proceeded to dismantle it

wCawdor-Quarry330.jpg.c5f0ed287e656b4143698408d8d85462.jpg

and scrape off the "LMS" lettering on the sides...

wCawdor-Quarry331.jpg.da7ab00c1f98a480640f9aa19733bb09.jpg

And then I attacked it with paint and weathering powders.

I'm sure model collectors will all be having the vapours now... :D

Anyway, this is going to work for its living, and here it is, working:

Looks much better all dirty :)

Hi Al

That looks very nice, it is certainly an attractive model and weathers very well. The prototype would have had a cabled a bit differently though with cables going around the wheels on the sides of the jib.

All looking very nice Al, I do like the weathering on the Peckett. I know what you mean about dirtying a new model but to me they just don't look right clean!

That's great, thanks David, I'll try to rearrange the cables to match.

Thanks Steve, no I agree, they just look wrong in the out-of-the-box state.

By your command, Mr Rob sir.

I have been getting down and dirty, grubbing about in the soil, planting some grassage.

And then I thought I would try for some atmosphere:

It's getting there now, a bit of three-linkery and some matt varnish on the crew:
