RMweb Gold A Murphy Posted May 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2020 The shot of Sandwich snaking out of PE with a long train of mainly blood and custard coaches is a glorious and for me, unashamedly nostalgic reminder, of just how wonderful our railways used to look. Gilbert, I salute you! Best wishes one and all, Alastair 3 2

The two are not the same... If so: Best - either variety of Spam can. Worst - streamlined "King" as mentioned previously... Good point, yes, streamlined or air smoothed both count, as really trying to achieve the same thing.

Votes please for the best and worst looking streamlined steam locomotives, and we will extend this world wide again. Once more aesthetics matter, rather than success or otherwise of the design in doing what it was supposed to do. Best looking streamlined loco: SNCB Type 12 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCB_Type_12 Worst looking; for me also GW Castle.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 29, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2020 For your elevenses picture today, I've just tried to show the length of the trains that run on PN. The reason that V2 is running Class H is that behind the vans and wagons there is yet another load of coal, and here it si snaking through the dog leg. I shall also try to show another picture of peony blooms, as looking at them yesterday I thought that this was as near to pure perfection as we shall ever see.

RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted May 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2020 Best and worst looking streamlined locomotives. The best is easy. The A4. The worst I find more difficult as there were so many awful looking streamlined efforts. At first I though about the GWR attemps but no, they were daft not ugly. Eventually the interweb provided me with this. A French 4-6-0 apparently nicknamed Joconde (Mona Lisa) by railwaymen. I cannot see the resemblance...

Another vote for the French Monstrosity de moi, and not just because it is French, but because it is truly ugly ! 1
jwealleans
Beaten to the 'Joconde'. Even my (French) wife said it was a monstrosity. I'd be very specific and say the silver A4s. The only thing I've seen which looked better than an A4 when put next to it was the Bugatti they reckon inspired it (in the NRM a few years ago, not sure whether it's still there. RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted May 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2020 (edited) As a lover of ALCo diesels,I’m going to vote for the ‘World series’. As the name suggest similar designs went right around the world although I was never lucky enough to see them in their prime in the States. My experience is in Greece, Spain and Australia, but I love the look wherever it is. https://images.app.goo.gl/AQWWRLvVSgYdjDiv7 I don’t have a wide enough knowledge to vote for the worst. And the T1 does seem to have been a bit of an enigma - Lucius Beebe described it as having "burning of Rome smoke effects". Next we'll be discussing Budd versus Pullman Standard!

bigwordsmith
If the EMD was classified as a streamliner then surely the same could apply to any bonneted diseasel? Funnily enough one could argue that the best looking streamliner on British rails os our trusty friend the HST, except that's not steam either!
