Hi

What exhibitions is the layout booked for next year.

I have seen Banbury at Banbury any chance of Hinksey yard doing a local (Oxfordshire) exhibition.

Hi David,

We are booked in for Epsom in April and have accepted Aldershot for October.  We were approached for details by a number of other clubs while we were at Warley and are waiting to see if they wish to follow up and invite us.

So it's possible we may get to your area.

Cheers,

Dave

After a quiet Christmas & New Year we have started plans for the next bits of work.  These include some more detailing: electric cabinets & point heaters, speed limit signs, mileposts and ground signals. We also need to add an angled blind to the lighting gantry to prevent us being blinded when we look out at the visitors.

In the Christmas Sales I got myself a Sony QX10 lens (as described by big jim http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/70783-jims-down-by-the-tracks-with-colas-thread/page-58&do=findComment&comment=1604172 ) and have been testing out its close-up abilities.

I should be on commission from sony!!

The network rail engineers could be preparing to replace the 'devils backbone' bridge across the line as i found out yesterday that the contractors are moving in this week in readyness to replace the 2 real bridges

Anything in particular you want pics of as im just about to go to hinksey in the next 10 mins!!

Any thoughts thus far regarding the lens Dave? Looks like a good piece of kit.

I've only really used it in close ups - but seems very good.  The image size (18M pixel) allows room to crop images and still get a decent amount of detail in the picture (all the above were cropped and then reduced down to 1000 pixels wide).  The depth of field is quite limited, so I need to experiment with taking images focussed at different point and trying to stitching them together.

The small size also allows it to be used in confined spaces on the layout and using a 10" tablet as a view finder is great!

Cheers,

Dave

Just checking in after some time away , nice to see some real locations getting the model treatment ..with the `N ` scale it really works well with proper train lengths ect ..

will be in HinkseyYard myself sat eve..keep up the good work , will be checking in again soon.

Just found this topic and am very impressed with all the hard work that has gone on.

I am up to page six so far and will digest the rest at a more relaxed pace.

Hope to bring myself up to speed by the end of the week.

I am looking forward to following your progress.

A very dedicated team.

Steve.

One of our club members who has not got access to the internet is in the process of converting some yellow Irish autoballasters into yellow Network Rail versions. I am looking for OO Network Rail transfers for him to go on the autoballasters. Can anyone point me to where I can get OO versions of the transfers for the autoballasters.

Thanks

Waverley47708@yahoo.co.uk

Following the Carillion autoballaster last week, and spurred on by seeing the sample Farish JJAs at Warley, David has been pressing on with the transfers on the first of the Network Rail HQAs:

These N Gauge Society kits are making up into some superb models. From this batch we will end up with 5 Carillion, 10 ex-Railtrack and 10 Network Rail versions. 25 wagon sounds like quite a lot, but we will probably need at twice that number eventually. When I mentioned that to David - he muttered something about having to get on with building his own layout :scratchhead:

I've made a start on plans for the site office/mess room, estimating sizes from Google Earth, Bing and photographs. The main building is some 55' x 10' with a secondary one 20' x 8'. The smaller one looks like a ribbed container, so that may provide a starting point for the model. The larger one will need to be built up with larger sides, windows and doors.

These are discretely tucked away behind a lattice fence about 130' long and about 9' high:

I was thinking that plastic strip would be easiest for the lattice fence, but someone else suggested brass etches. Does anyone know of an existing range that has something suitable? Many thanks.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi,

We're getting ready to take Hinksey to the Farnham and District MRC exhibition at Aldershot on 10/11 October.

We have been working on small details and have now got the signals working:

The signals are from CR Signals and are being driven by Heathcote IRDASC-4RI signal controllers. The signals are 4-aspect with feathers to indicate routes just off scene: South to Kennington Junction (for Cowley) and North for the slow line into Oxford.  The IRDASC units give a time delay between the aspects in sequence once the train has passed (apologies for the quality of the photos - I forgot the proper camera).

And the feather is independently controlled (it appears brighter here than in reality).

There is a little bit of work to do on some new stock, and then final testing, cleaning and get everything ready to travel to the show.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Ian,

There are Infra red emitters and sensors in the trackbed (just inside the hidden areas a bit beyond the signals), triggered when a train passes over.   We felt that this gave a good effect without having to dig holes in the visible trackwork.

Our resident (full-size) Train Driver said the slight delay was OK, but our resident Signal Engineer said they should go to red much quicker (when the leading vehicle was about 5m past the signal) - hopefully most people will just enjoy the flashing lights :)

Cheers,

Dave

The Southbound empty Avon 'binliner' passes the signal

and heads down toward Didcot

The binliner wagons are from Vonzack's KFA and waste container 3D prints.

We're looking forward to the show at the weekend and hope to see some RMweb members there.

Cheers,

Dave
