Oxford diecast... whats next?

I cannot see this one working. How many occupants? Adults, children, pets, luggage? The variations would be enough to destroy the sanity of the makers, sellers and buyers.

Corgi tried it on a bus and coach set, and it was a one off. The appearance was awful but not helped by using 1/64 occupants in 1/76 vehicles. The Hattons' photos reveal the full horror. http://www.hattons.co.uk/241309/Corgi_Collectables_45003Corgi_U03_Stagecoach_Two_Bus_set_Leyland_Olympian_ECW_and_Van_Hool_Alizee_Pre_owned_poo/StockDetail.aspx

At least Oxford make it easy to get inside their vehicles, amputate the legs, shorten and bend the arms to reach the steering wheel, and reassemble. But then the vehicle with driver and passengers sits stationary forever on a layout, looking no more convincing then an empty parked vehicle in the same location.

This driver is waiting for his mate before setting out on a recovery job.

aec_ma10.jpg

I have some motorised buses in 1/148 scale moving on my layout but since the motor mechanism only leaves space for a driver on the lower deck I have not yet fitted them all out. On the other hand passengers on the upper deck tend to draw attention to the "no passengers" lower deck, so actually they look better without passengers upstairs.

Perhaps all the passengers smoke....

Edit - and particularly for pay-as-you-enter buses, a bus can be stopped quite a while whilst the driver collects fares, or in other places there may be a timing stop. The westbound Number 17 in Reading stops opposite Broad Street Mall in Reading for about 10 minutes for a driver change, and the eastbound service is usually held at Jackson's corner for several minutes owing to the number of passengers.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Oxford Diecast new announcements will be made tomorrow evening from about 8pm on the members only Oxford Diecast Collectors Facebook group. Lyndon Davies and Eloise Davies will be online.

Will the announcements get posted here?

I'd guess that the majority of RMWebbers are not also members of the ODC Facebook group so just announcing there will be rather restrictive. A wider audience will generate more interest.

They will probably be on the Oxford website tomorrow in the Blog section at the time of the official announcements to the trade at the ToyFair in London. I'll flag it up when I it appears there. There is likely to be a list of 100+ items. I am sure a few hours will not hurt anyone on RMWeb. RMWeb members are renowned for their patience :-). https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/blogs/news

Anyone who is really impatient to learn the news can join the Facebook group and see it live where all the images will also be available to view. As far as I know Oxford Diecast is the only major UK manufacturer to engage directly with their collectors online rather than through a forum or message board. The MD (Eloise) posts there from time to time between the major announcements, as do other staff members. The Facebook group is independent of Oxford but it has had a special relationship with Lyndon Davies, Eloise and some other staff members developed over several years.

Seems a bit of a faff for all individuals to have to sign up to Facebook and then join a group when it wouldn't take more than a minute or two for someone (or even ODC) to copy and paste the list here after it is published on their group.

Don't worry, Grahame! Mike Harvey has been very good at posting up on here information about the latest announcements, which are quarterly for Oxford Diecast. Occasionally I've done it, but Mike is usually there first - many thanks to Mike.

In the past Lyndon has put lots of pictures on the Facebook page of new models - early cad, illustrations, and photographs of forthcoming castings (last time, for example, he put in a photograph of the 1/76 Austin Somerset casting, which I suspect is still some months away). Hopefully Eloise will do the same this evening. Obviously none of us can put these up on here - for that reason it's well worth joining the Oxford Diecast Collectors Facebook group.

I'm not worried and just a list will be fine for me. Surely that can be copied and posted here?

The snag with joining their group is that you've also got to join Facebook first and give them an email address.

Unfortunately Grahame it is not one list. It is probably 20 lists published across 20 posts with comments in between. The announcements are made by scale subdivided by vehicle category, with re-liveries separate from new castings. I had intended to post the lists here but I am going to be on a train with iffy wifi and a small phone so that seems too much of a "faff" for me. It will all be in the public domain tomorrow anyway. As I said earlier RMWeb members are renowned for their patience.:-)

The information is in a private members group so not available for general Facebook users to view. Anyway everything is in my earlier post. Be interested to read RMweb members reactions to reading it now rather than tomorrow.

Okay. My quick off-the-cuff comment/reaction is that the N gauge list looks very slim pickings and appears to be simply re-liveries of existing models with perhaps one or two all new, and one of those, a green Goddess, is already available from OM in N.

Well, that's one thing that I'll add to my purchase list, but in all honesty, knowing a day ahead of when it will likely appear on Oxford's own website isn't a big deal - especially when it will be at least six months before they hit the shops.  The rest are either too modern, or too old.

The new items are listed with images on pages 1 and 2 of this link:-

https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/collections/by-range?page=1

and here for Coca-Cola branded items:-

One or two items have been associated with the wrong image which is being addressed.

Good to see the T4, and especially T5 Transporters in 4mm, hopefully we'll get them shrunk to N in due course to break the monotony of Transit after Transit. If they have tooled for the standard van as well as camper, there's loads of liveries they could do. Both vans (with minor facelifts) have had long production lives

One great thing about Oxford is that with new announcements every 4 months there is the chance to be disappointed 3 times per year.Much more often than with other producers. My interests are mainly N gauge. Personally I am pleased with modern items (New Routemaster, McGawn HGV, Stobart Rail Transit), the Green Goddess and Freightlifter for period dioramas, the Cortina as NGS Carflat fodder, and the bus related van and coach for my PSV interests. May be giving the Walls Ice cream trailer, the Coca-Cola Xmas truck and the Churchill tank a miss.

Looking at that list I get the impression that a modeller who wishes to portray 2016-18 would have a problem

Unless you like Transit Vans, Range Rovers/Land Rovers, Jaguars, HGVs, fire appliances, ambulances, and vehicles still on the road in 2016 although from previous eras. Problem as always is the paucity of popular modern cars and light vans in particular, which is a common feature across the ranges produced across the world. It appears that modern day licensing is a major issue for model vehicle producers.

On the licensing note - I'm hopeful that the Transporter may see other contemporary, or more to the point recent past, Veedubs such as Golfs and Polos.

Produce a model in 2018 that debuted in 2017 and you've only got the up to the minute modellers to sell to. Produce a 2007 model (Golf Mk V for example) and you've got a much wider range. In fact, the Golf V is even older than that. You get the gist though! Personally speaking, I'd like them to do an N scale 2013 Polo in Flash red, but hey, can't see that happening.

I'm surprised we haven't seen variations on the truck toolings more, such as the high roof Topline cab for the Scania. Again, they seem to like up to the minute, higher end models, rather than the common as muck mid range distribution machines. The 4mm range seems to have benefitted massively from the Stobart Atlas Editions collection, so I doubt the 1990s Scania, Daf etc will be shrunk. You still see the odd 3 series on the road, and the Daf tooling would cover production to the early 2000s so there's a few still in use.

Plain white models would be good for those of us who like to detail and repaint etc. Even bearing supermarket branding for example, it'd be a damn sight easier to rebrand than a cab that's crusted in layers of Stobart printing. Sainsbury's have a nice fleet of plain white Scanias, Mercedes and Volvos, with a small orange logo on the cab door and trailer. Some of the Scanias even match the spec of the Oxford tooling. Pair that with their chiller trailer...

Not much to get excited about for late 30s SR. I rather suspect that "76LR2AS004 Hong Kong Police" will stand out like a sore thumb...unless I can concoct a really good backstory!  :jester:
