Central division signals - not all NER signals (and they really loved their signals) were not all the pretty and almost twee McKenzie & Holland slotted post type so well provided to us modellers by Danny Pinnock. Many were quite ordinary, these are typical of the central division (basically the S&D or there abouts) but all types seem to be used in many areas. I've trawled books for photos of west Durham lines, including of course the Stainmore book and this signal is the first result. The arm is an MSE Stevens H&B/LSWR type with slightly modified spectacle. the post is 20' high and it will be the yard starter. It will have a square cap fitted and a square LNER lamp fitted. I'm not too happy with the post cap, I may change this at some point, it's only plasticard after all. It won't be operating for Birtley next weekend, simply not enough time... There will be another similar to this and as platform starter (to replace the Northern division one already there) and a bracket for the home signals, eventually. The new signal may end up as the platform starter as it probably should have something shorter here as sighting under the bridge is not good. Yesterday I got the point and remaining track ballasted, one of the next jobs is to fit the backscene and paint it sky blue then the rest of the scenic work can be finished. I am guessing that one was taken indoors and the other outdoors to get that vivid blue colour?...unless the bridge is playing games with the camera's light meter.... RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted March 3, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2012 Hi Pete, they do look different but the layout didn't move at all between the two shots, both taken using 'ordinary' fluorescent lamps (can't afford that many 'daylight' lamps), one is taken looking down and the other up. I was also using centre spot metering and the subject in the centre of each shot are the opposite, one light (making the sky dark) and the other dark (the loco, making the sky light). Anyway I mixed plenty of the blue paint a while ago so it should all be the same in the end, one day I'll paint a few clouds and greenery on it. Edit - in reality it looks like the first shot. I've added a fence (Ratio) and filled in behind it with bushes and trees, the joints in the backscene being hidden by the trees. I found the best way to get a better shot of the signal cabin from under the bridge was to use my phone, it's a nice fit under the bridge and leaning it against the weigh office and using the 2 second timer it's managed quite well. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted March 6, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2012 Pretty much got everything done to the layout for Birtley this weekend so I decided to have a play and iron out a few little niggles in the track that were annoying me. There was one intermittent dry joint, a couple of tight spots through points and one tender with it's back to back too close. While I was doing this I took a few photos. Halfway through this a new (well ok, almost antique but new to me) lens arrived for my camera so some of the photos were taken with the 18-55mm that came with the camera and some with the 'new' 50mm f1.7. I have had to dust the layout as this lens is so clear it looked a right mess. 'Old' 18-55mm Lens. J21 0-6-0. Q5 0-8-0. 'New' 50mm Lens. N10 0-6-2. That's something I'd like to look into myself, doing a North Eastern-type loco shed at one end of my 'Thoraldby' layout. Have you got a product code reference? (My local model shop never seems to have much of anything of use these days!) Like the layout idea. I used Wills' sheets when constructing my coal cells both on 'Thoraldby' and my son's layout 'Kirkrigg'. almost all the buildings on 'Kirkrigg' were scratch-built as opposed to about 70% on 'Thoraldby'. Nice pic; in the boxes I used to work in, the rugs were usually put over the lever frame to keep the draughts out!
