RMweb Premium ArthurK Posted January 31, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 31, 2012 Very nice construction...albeit living dangerously with the proximity of the tea mug My old layout Teesdale (see below) was designed with 'trays' either side of the panel. These had the electrics beneath (they were waterproof). I usually gave instructions "a cup of tea - every hour on the hour". It didn't always work but it was a nice try. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/50847-teesdale/page__fromsearch__1 Arthur
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 1, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2012 I've got most of the lighting beam made today, it's a 4"x1" top with a ply front and back, the back should be deep enough to stop us being blinded but let enough light onto the layout. It's hinged in the middle so packed away it will be just under 5' long and when erected just slots onto it's legs. Each half will have 2 fluorescent striplights which will be connected by a removable lead between the two halves. It now needs sanding down and it will be stained like the fiddleyard boards. IanLister
Nice job Paul, even if it does look in the first pic as though the whole thing is hanging from the ceiling.......
RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted February 1, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2012 I'm not sure how I have missed this layout Paul! Very impressive work. The buildings look superb. Your descriptions and phots showing stages of construction are very informative. Keep up the great work!
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 1, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2012 Yes Ian, it does look that way, I was struggling to find an angle where all the bulbs were hidden... Glad you've found it Mudmagnet and you're enjoying it.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 2, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2012 Let there be light... Lights fitted in the beam. I've painted the inside white to reflect more light out.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 2, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2012 Back to the Signal cabin. I've excavated the site for the Signal cabin behind the coal depots. It will be set into the ground similar to Lartington http://www.flickr.co...c55/3887613256/ http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ I've also undercut the ground and removed about 10 - 15mm of polystyrene so the surface can be lowered towards the track level, there will still be a bit of filling in to do. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 2, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2012 Thanks for the comments guys. (The empty mug was actually just round the corner in the fiddleyard...)
RMweb Premium Loxborough Posted February 2, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 2, 2012 Took my eye off the ball here for a while and you have done a huge amount of work, all of it with your usual precision and care. Great stuff. Good idea to sand down the brickwork (and like all good ideas, really obvious once someone else has thought of it...). I have had the same issuesin the past withthe SE Finecast bickwork, but just lived with it. No more. Quick question; how did you apply the red/brown brickwork paint? I would have thought liberal dry brushing, but it looks like you may have done it with a rag? Keen to know as the effect is great. George
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 2, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2012 Hi George, the red/brown was put on with a combination of kitchen roll and dry brushing, mostly dry (actually not so dry) brushing as the acrylic paint behaves differently to Humbrol enamel, which is best dabbed on with the kitchen roll. IanLister
That's looking excellent Paul...like it belongs there. Keep the painting tips coming! Ian
hymek2
I like the way you have flattened the top off of the SE Finecast brickwork. I have been using Slaters bricks until now but found that when I try to line up a vertical of a window or door with a vertical line in the bricks, the plastic bricks are all slightly off-set. the SE ones are actually in line with each other but as you say have a slightly bulbous shape. Sanding them flat works well. Another useful tip learnt. Thansk.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 14, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2012 Didn't do much last week but I've got back into it now. Barge boards, gutters and downpipes have been added to the outside and painted. Work has been almost completed on the interior, probably wasted as no one will really see inside, the cabin faces the backscene, but I've enjoyed doing it anyway. I've used a mixture of Wills and Springside bits and would probably use just Springside in the future although the quadrents aren't really suited to an NER M&H frame. Wills frame, 14 levers (all I had). Is this going a bit far? kept me warm though... (20mm high) Pretty much complete, there's a chair to go in and the block shelf will go in after glazing. Needs a cat on the rug (Scalescenes) in front of that fire...
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 14, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2012 Forgot to mention, Felton Lane will be at the Birtley show on 10th & 11th March.
jwealleans
Outstanding. Only thing missing (apart from the cat) is the bobby's old armchair. Make sure you put it on the signal box thread (which I think has reappeared). You could leave the lid off and put a mirror on the backscene so people can see into it? RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 15, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2012 The chair's made, it's in the process of being painted.
RMweb Premium Loxborough Posted February 15, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 15, 2012 Lovely work, though I can't help feeling the rug is a little exotic? George
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 15, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2012 Hi George, the rug will be toned down a bit, I added it as a bit of a personal touch by the bobby as this would have been a one man signal cabin, it's not really a busy branch. It was one of 4 on the Scalescenes corner pub sheets, the others were far too modern.
simon hudson
Cracking layout Paul i wish I could get up to Birtley this year great bunch of lads I havent been for a few years (I used to be a member) since I moved to North Wales
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 25, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2012 The signal cabin is now nearing completion. It has been glazed although some of the pieces are a bit wonky, I'll sort these when I find a little patience. Name boards have been added along with the handrails and platforms. It still needs the brickwork tidying up a bit and it should really have a large ventilator on the roof, might think about that one a bit first.
