For the last few exhibitions there has been a problem with the point approaching the coal depots, it would continually de adjust its self, I thought it was the operating rod, being made of 2.5mm coper wire being too soft, this rod has a Z in it to compensate (same as an Omega loop). I replaced this with one made from 1mm brass and it was no better. It turned out in the end after a lot of head scratching to be the microswitch having a too strong spring causing the Z to be compressed a little with each point operation. Sorted!

A few more pretty bits and the last before packing up in the morning for Wigan, some ferns and reeds in the riverbank. Reeds from an emulsion brush and the ferns are Noch N scale Laser cut minis.

Had a great weekend at Wigan, nice to see so many photos of the layout (and unfortunately one of me...) in the Wigan show thread, the layout continued to run well although the Q5 only ran one train as it's cylinders were fouling (actually it stopped dead!) the ground signal on the run round and the J24's gear grubscrew came loose but this was easily sorted. Also had two more invites on Sunday.

For a while I have been wanting to have a go at some static grass but the price of the Noch applicator is a bit silly and the flyswatter/tea strainer thing looked a bit iffy. I decided to get one of the Greenscene ones and it's a great bit of kit. I started to go over the greenery on FL last night after a couple of tests on a piece of brown painted plywood yesterday afternoon, I had bought a bottle of Greenscene's glue which is a bit expensive (£5 for 175ml), but thought I should at least try it, I did one 6" x 4" test with this and another with PVA. The PVA won hands down, better grass coverage and more grass standing up, it brushes on better and of course it's cheaper.

It's going well, nearly half of the grass covered in two short sessions, a couple more should goes should see it done, what I have done up to now is using medium length, 2/3 summer green and 1/3 spring green, the area round the stables will use the short fibres with maybe a few medium mixed in.

OK, this may not be the most accurate model, but it looks a bit like a Grey Wagtail... (couldn't get it's tail to wag though...)

Most of the grass is completed, only a few small corners still to do, I have used the shortest fibres on the area around the stables, mainly so it wouldn't hide the hens...

I've taken a couple of photos of my initial test piece, just a bit of plywood painted brown, as you can see the earth fixing was well into the glue on both. The block on the left is using the Greenscene glue and the block on the right is with PVA, the PVA block has better coverage, more of the fibres are upright and so it looks so much better.

When applying the grass I dripped a small amount of glue onto one of the bushes, I immediately wiped it off the best I could, thinking that nothing would stick to the tiny amount that was left I carried on, how wrong was I, trying to remove the offending fibres I nearly pulled the bush off the layout!

The fibres have now been covered with more bush...

I was having trouble clearing up the stray fibres, especially where the vacuum cleaner wouldn't reach so I made an extension out of a short piece of hose pipe taped to the nozzle.

Layout ran very well yesterday at Hartlepool, had lots of positive comments about the static grass, I must have got it something like right!

Just had a mention on Radio 2, they wanted to know what everyone was doing this Sunday, playing trains and drinking tea!
