Good evening everyone ........ :smile_mini2:

Firstly can I say a big apology for the lack of updates on my thread ....... I wish I could report some progress for you, but I'm afraid that Riverside Cement is no more.

It's two years since I last posted, and in that time, a personal loss, and a lot of family stuff has had to take precedence over my modelling ...... sadly the baseboard for Riverside Cement was "stored" in the shed, and MDF being what it is, the weather got into it. Also, a lot of the buildings were damaged ...... shame really, but I had too much else going on, and at the time your priorities change ...... still, I learned a lot from the layout (as far as it got), so I'm looking back at it with a good degree of satisfaction as to how it was turning out.

I had periods of time when I wanted to model something, and for a short while I "dabbled" in N gauge on a very small scale.

I read a thread on here by Sir Madog called "Japanese Prototype Desktop Layout in N Gauge" where he details how he built a layout in short connecting modules using Kato track, and I thought "that's just about what I could do with trying for now" ....... very small and manageable modules, without too much time needing investing.

I started building one ..... basically I copied his idea for a first go, to see how it turned out, and was really chuffed with the resulting module ....... I know it's not Riverside Cement, but as a way of rounding off the thread I thought I might post the pics in here for you to see.

The first pic shows the basic module concept with a length of Kato N Gauge track glued down ....... it overlaps the ends by a couple of millimetres, and that allows enough movement for connecting the modules and taking them apart without damage.

Then you see the finished job ...... foam tunnel mouth and retaining wall, track ballasted, and scenic work done. The hill behind the wall/tunnel is pink foam board. Then with my class 66 on, and finally views from the back and end showing the MDF construction, and bringing up the rear with a steam excursion exiting the tunnel.

I had thoughts of building a layout using this method, and a second module was built, but I just couldn't get comfortable with N Gauge ...... a bit too "wee" for my dodgy eyesight, so that's as far as it went, but the experience gained ...... first ballasting/ scenery etc ...... was invaluable, and stands me in good stead for my next effort.

I'll post the pics of the second module in another post because there is quite a few ....... it's a lot more detailed.

Simon.  :)

Back again !! ...... here are the pics for the second "module"

It connects behind the tunnel, and is basically a hill ........ I called it the "Folly On The Hill" as where I live, there are quite a few "follies" dotted around ...... unusual buildings and structures, and I thought this looks like a mini Castle. It was actually a Lilliput Lane building donated by my wife for the cause !!

I modelled a path wending up the hill, complete with hikers ...... some walking, and a couple sat down at the top of the hill near the folly, taking a breather.

Lots of trees and bushes, and a fence following the path ...... turned out quite well, and connected to the first module you don't see the join, and the concept starts to look clearer.

Like I said, I didn't get any further than this, but it was a good way of scratching the modelling itch I kept getting without becoming too taxing at the time.

Hope you like them ....... I am now ready to start a new layout in 00 gauge ....... clean slate and all that !!

I have a lot of ideas already ...... small shunting layout 4ft x2ft ...... dcc ...... water at the front (sound familiar) back of an engineering factory ........ oh well, I guess I'll have to start another thread then !!  :read: :swoon:

Kind of you Matt ..... Thanks very much.

I'm currently in the planning stage of the new layout, although I do have the basic baseboard built already. Track plan is pretty much sorted out ..... just trying ideas for buildings etc.

I'll get a new thread started soon, as I enjoyed documenting this effort as it progressed ..... nothing like feedback as you work (play!!) to help you along.

Thanks very much Arthur ....... I'd had my eye on that Lilliput Lane tower for a while, and finally got the missus to release it from her collection.

Turned out to be the perfect size and look for what I was after. I really enjoyed the second module, as it gave me a chance to use my imagination in creating a mini scene (and I learned the basics of ballasting and scenery too)

Cheers. :)

Hi Ste :)

I've not really adressed the problem yet, but the Kadee coupler fits into a NEM socket which is on a seperate "arm" from the 4 wheel bogie of the Cargowaggon.

I guess this is because of the length of the wagon ....... its about 290mm from coupler to coupler, and I suppose to get round tighter curves it needs to be this way.

The Kadee will need to be lowered, so some way of cranking it down maybe, or cut one "swallowtail" off the end of a coupler and glue a Kadee underneath it ? ...... I will have to try a few things out I guess, but I reckon I'll sort it out one way or another.

When I come up with a solution I will post it on here Ste ...... Wouldn't it be great if things were made to one standard ......... I guess that would be asking too much eh ? ...........

Cheers !!

Simon.

Did you ever solve the Cargowaggon/Kadee conundrum - I have the same issue to resolve? Why go the bother of using a stepped NEM equipped tension lock in a pocket that is too high....I ask you..
