Another theory that didn't hold water.... 1

Coach bogie
I remeber 40044 at Reddish. It had been in a pile up at Chinley. The other end was all smashed in. I must dig out my shots I took at the time. Mike Wiltshire

The loco was repaired and ran for about 4 -5 years before heading to the scrap yard. The connecting doors were plated over during the repairs and you could tell which Class 40 it was providing of course it was running No2 first.

RMweb Premium keefer Posted August 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2021 (edited) Is that a rare sighting of a Royal Train comms cable in place? Most evidence is usually just the circular blanking plate on the loco front. Also just noticed the stuck-on label in place of the 4th blind! Now you mention I'm pretty sure it is, yes - there is a very nice photo f D371 at Coventry on a Royal working in one of the Ian Allen colour portfolio books.
