Deltic Class 55 Photos

Recommended Posts

I keep kicking myself, the few years I worked on them at KX and couldn't be bothered taking the camera to work!! Never mind, I keep looking out for a pic of me on one of them!

I did take my camera with me during my time at "The Cross", (1979-84), and these are some of my photo's taken out on the road on various trips.

Approaching Little Barford power station in 55013 on 1L44 the 1605 KX -York, 55008 passes working 1E10, 0910 Dundee-KX, 11th September 1981.

55013 is just about to breast the summit of Stoke Bank and enter Stoke tunnel, (which is just round the corner hidden in the trees), with 1L44 the 1605 KX -York as 55019 passes working 1A26, 1550 York-KX, 11th September 1981.

11th September 1981 and sat in the platform at Retford with 55013 on 1L44, as another HST passes us. This time northbound. Although it may have left Kings Cross nearly 30 minutes behind us and we were running at 100MPH a lot of the time, a following HST would catch you up. Whilst once working the 1405 York service out of Kings Cross with a Deltic, and despite being a 100MPH train, we were looped in the Down Passenger Loop at Claypole, just south of Newark to let a late running HST past us.

55013 was the last Deltic I drove on the main line on Monday 14th December 1981, from Doncaster to Kings Cross on 1E35 20:25 Edinburgh - King's Cross. (Checking my diary it might be the last one I ever drove?). The fastest I ever drove one was 110MPH. And that was on one engine. I can't remember which one, but it was on the 1940 KX-Hull. Looking up in my diary suggests it was 55004, but I'm not 100% sure. 55017 was my favourite. My diary has many good runs on that loco recorded in it.

You had just passed one of my trainspotting haunts. I used to cycle out from Kelpie's to the site of a demolished overbridge and spend the day there once in a while, armed with a bottle of pop and a sandwich.

Been neglecting my thread a bit so, with a vengeance, here is 55005 passing Benton Quarry junction 15.8.80

Interesting to see the bullion van behind the loco on pic no.2 above. They usually worked with a support coach, along with a helicopter escort. Must have been returning empty!

Is that what it was? I thought it was a TPO or parcels van. It's a fairly short train so I think it may have been an Edinburgh - Newcastle local stopping at Chathill, Morpeth and so on.

Like 55015 slowing down at Chathill on 1E15 on 29.4.80.

4 days to go until the end (or so we thought!) 29-12-81.

Another dull and dreary day and a trip on the Deltic Executive railtour.

Looks pretty nippy out there.

Alycidon at Leeds...

... sure iv seen these pics somewhere else?

Cheers

James

Entirely possible you've seen very similar, as here are a couple of mine from the same tour:

Same headboard shot - maybe I trod on McGomez's toes:

And I don't think I even got out at Harrogate, it was so dreary and cold:

I'm starting to lose track of which photos I have posted but here is one from 21.4.79 showing 55022 rounding the curve at Tinsley on the "North Eastern" railtour which went to Dinting with double headed 76014 and 76030 Dinting - Tinsley and 55022 Tinsley - Newcastle

Here's one of my photo's of of Deltic 21 at Huddersfield https://www.flickr.com/photos/41294071@N02/3815780796/in/photolist-6PcaZs-6PbSG5

I was overjoyed when these started working through to Liverpool. The most memorable part of these journeys was racing up the bank, from Manchester Victoria, to Miles Platting - the brakes had to be applied for the curve through the station, which never seemed to happen when Peaks or 47's were working the train !

Not quite enough '2's for RSG, I think it is KOYLI. Nice pictures none the less!

Oops, getting my years mixed up. Thanks for pointing that out, my post has been duly edited. Thank you.

Possibly a rarity in preservation on the mainline, Sonning Cutting, No.19 taken from No.22, can't remember date though.

Wow! Whoever would have thought that a couple of Deltics would ever have passed each other there...

Of all the things to see on the Midland mainline, especially almost entirely unannounced, a green deltic....  Passing north en route from Southall to Derby is D9009 'Alycidon'

Was rather lucky that there was a lookout for people working on the line further up, so a nice toot plus some revving up was had too!  Only went out on spec.....

Cheers,

Tim

The [then] last day. Hand held in the dark, no flash, mostly blurred, very flawed, but what a memory. The lights, the noise, the shouts of the passengers hanging from the windows. Then home by train to Barnsley in time to see the arrival at Kings Cross on the news.
