On a flippant note..... Were/are there any plans to name any of the 80x fleet after rivers ? I'm thinking of the Highland Railway's River class, deemed too heavy for their own railway, and the Southern Railway's River class tanks, which had to be rebuilt as tender locos after derailments.....

How about Slough Of Despond for one:jester:

I think the location is Doncaster but I haven't been able to check with her yet.

Looks like it!

Definitely Doncaster, know it too well from 11 years of commuting through the station.

I must admit I think the GWR green is the best of the IEP liveries, simple but dignified and rather classy. They seem to be very well looked after too. I also like the blue ones on the ECML, Limo? Again, very simple but a very nice french-ish blue. I haven't seen the TPE ones yet but I do like the TPE CAF sets, although the livery is slightly busy it is very striking and works really well.

Whilst accepting that liveries will always be a personal view of what looks good or not, I agree that the TPE livery works well on the 802/2s.  Probably not an easy task to achieve given that the colours and layout also adorn vehicles of classes 185, 397, as well as the Mark 5 'Nova 3' sets and the accompanying class 68 locos.

TPE 802205 approaching Heaton Lodge East Junction on 17th August 2022 with 1P29, from Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle.

TPE 802218 unusually calling at Brighouse on the Calder Valley line on 13th August 2022, due to engineering work on the usual route through Huddersfield, with 9M12 from Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street.

Liveries are a matter of personal taste. Personally, I think the GWR livery is a rather dull and uninspiring hark back to the past. It makes no use of the train's shape and form, something which LNER, Lumo & TPE have managed rather well.

They (GWR) could have made a little more of it with a nice broad gold or cream stripe along the sides, with a curve at the ends in sympathy with the nose profile.

I'm with yourself, Rodent. I find the GWR green very dull and uninteresting visually. LNER at least makes use of the lines of the 80x design but it's TPE that really stands out.

I agree.

On a dull day, and in shadow,  the GWR livery looks almost black to me, with no hi-lights to lift it,

cheers

Well, it suits its namesake predecessors, they had to slap a polished copper thing on top to try and brighten things up they were so dull 😛

I find the LNER Azuma livery somewhat bland and forgettable. I like the Lumo livery but part of the reason for that is it a very simple livery based on a nice colour. TPE have quite a complex livery but it seems to have been very well considered and is genuinely striking, combining attractive colours with a clever design.

A few minutes near Temple Hirst Junction, between Doncaster and York, on 27th August 2022 whilst waiting for the 'Midland Pullman' liveried HST to pass on a rail tour - photos on this thread if you're interested - and several 800s of various sub-classes sped by...

I don't like the TPE livery on the 68 - looks far too busy and fussy there (and on most of its other trains for that matter) but it suits the 800s.

I'm in the "like" camp on the GWR livery, smart and dignified. The Lumo blue is too bright, the LNER white and red the very definition of bland, whilst managing to be almost gaudy at the same time. Nothing smart about it anyway. All IMO of course.
