two tone green
The BBC are reporting that that all the photos taken by the probe will take 16 months to get back to earth due to the slow bit rate. I think BT have done the Internet connection !

pointstaken
Appreciate all the humour in previous posts (yes, my parents had the record of "I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch"), but don't let it hide the story of another great scientific achievement. Well done, all of you ! Dennis

34theletterbetweenB&D
XKCD, may it live long and prosper. Bit sad to think that we will never in our lifetimes see equivalent quality pictures of a similar object from another solar system.
t8hants
According to one TV pundit, in the time it takes to reach another solar system we should have advanced enough to be able to travel faster than it is going at the moment and pick it up on the way. Will Pluto be reinstated as a planet once more?

The Lurker
According to one TV pundit, in the time it takes to reach another solar system we should have advanced enough to be able to travel faster than it is going at the moment and pick it up on the way. Will Pluto be reinstated as a planet once more? the re-measurement of its size shows it to be bigger than Eris after all; this is one of the criteria that led to its "down-grading" and apparently may lead to reappraisal of its status (per IIRC the BBC). But possibly not as it doesn't meet other criteria that were set at the time, such as its gravity clearing all the other objects in its orbit. I'm just fascinated by how many objects of a fair size. It used to be staple science fiction fare not so long ago that there had been the discovery of a 10th planet.
Ozexpatriate
Will Pluto be reinstated as a planet once more? Let's remember Pluto has a smaller radius (1185 km) than the Earth's moon (1737 km). It is sill bigger than Ceres - the largest of the dwarf planets in the asteroid belt (469 km). Other comparisons: Mercury (the smallest designated planet) has a radius of 2440 km. Ganymede (the largest Jovian moon) has a radius of 2634 km. Titan (the largest moon of Saturn) has a radius 2576 km. All of these are much bigger than Pluto. trisonic
I thought that the real reason Pluto was downgraded was because it is expected that we will find many objects larger in the Kuiper Belt proper? Best, Pete.
