Merry Christmas everyone.  Sorry for the lack of updates but it has been a bit hectic recently.  Here are two shots of the layout so far.  The left side will be a countryside theme with maybe a non rail served quarry squeezed into the top left corner.

post-25512-0-18327500-1482697476_thumb.jpg

This photo shows what will be an industrial theme with a "fiddle yard" in view.  In the top right corner where the heater is I plan to have a two track depot with a 3rd track on the outside for refueling locos.  I need to buy some more track to complete the yard sidings.  One siding may be used for unloading material from engineers trains where it can be re-processed.  With the layout being slightly bigger now I can increase the lengths of my trains slightly.  I plan to get one more container wagon and I have ordered two new Tarmac JGA hoppers so that is now a rake of 6 when they arrive.

post-25512-0-90056800-1482697487_thumb.jpg

This is a view of the station.  Track work wise it will be a bit more like Wigan North Western with two bay platforms for local services/light engines to terminate.  I need to buy extra track for this too.  The town center and industrial buildings on the outskirts of town are roughly positioned.

post-25512-0-87794400-1482697504_thumb.jpg

Here is a new Christmas addition to my collection, two FNA flask wagons for my DRS class 37 to haul.  Sorry but it will not be top and tailed or double headed until I get a DRS class 68.

post-25512-0-38057700-1482697516_thumb.jpg

I quite like this photo of the flask train in the sidings in the yard with the station and town center in the distance.

Hopefully I can get a bit done over the Xmas holidays.  Thanks for looking!

So after various track work modifications with wagons derailing at certain points on the layout I think I have finally cracked it.  Had a running session last night and tried every loco with every type of wagon being hauled and only had problems with my sons Flying Scotsman.  Here are a few photos of each loco at various points around the layout.

70006 has come off the bi-directional platform 6 line and heads towards the storage yard sidings.  I can fit two more HHA Freightliner hoppers in the yard now so that will be a half decent sized train of 6 HAA's.

post-25512-0-87768400-1484852503_thumb.jpg

Here is a freightliner 70 and 66 parked up in what will be the 3 lane TMD that will service all the freight operating companies locos.

post-25512-0-21969800-1484852792_thumb.jpg

Here I have put some cloud wallpaper tester I got some time ago onto the plywood at the back of the layout.  I know I have not matched it up but I just wanted to see wether it suffered from damp or not in the garage.  Also with the plywood I followed the contours of the garage walls but not sure if I should have done flat sheets and lost a few inches at the back.  I can get 1 extra KFA container wagon now I have longer sidings.  So that will be a rake of 5 when I can find one to buy.

post-25512-0-40461500-1484852881_thumb.jpg

Here a class 60 is also about to join the bi-directional line of platform 6 after travelling along the freight only line from the yard.

The layout is intended to have play factor so my kids can enjoy coming into the garage with me and get involved.  Here they are with my little lad at the controls of the class 70!  Thanks so much for looking.  Hopefully I can start to progress with some scenic, fixing the track down and ballasting.  Might try out point motors and have a "signal box" where my son can set the points.

Since last post I have had a go at making my own traction maintenance depot out of some 2mm card, some corrugated card and some spare parts from Metcalfe card kits that I had left and kept.  For the purpose if this exercise I came up with "Springfield Traction Maintenance Depot" which is along the lines of Springs Branch depot in Wigan.  Springfield took from Wigan Athletics old ground which was Springfield Par.  I made signs for the depot, printed off some health and safety signs on the computer, cut them out and stuck them on the building.  Add to that a Freightliner class 66 and 70 plus some TMD clutter around the place and here is the result.

Not sure whether to make another one but this time take a bit more time over it or buy a card kit or plastic kit/ready built Scenecraft or Hornby one.  I might add some interior detail to this one and see what it ends up like.

Hello Peter

Just been having a read through your thread. Good to see a new layout on the go. Looks like it's got the makings of a great set up with plenty of interesting operations. Looking forward to seeing it develop.

Cheers

Marcus

Thank you for visiting Marcus your kind comments are much appreciated.  It's progress can be slow.  I usually go in the garage at night for a few hours when the kids have gone to bed for construction purposes.

Good evening everyone.  I am not sure where to have the TMD I made.  If anyone has any thoughts, opinions or preferencs to solve my dilemma they will be much appreciated.  Please see photos below of where I am thinking it should be.

It could go here right by the sidings in the yard.  I was thinking of having a Network Rail materials recycling site here.

post-25512-0-30338100-1486062839_thumb.jpg

Or it could stay here were I initially intended.  If I did move it from here I could  alter the trackwork and have a scrapyard or aggregate yard.

A Colas Rail class 66 waits on the freight only line for a path through platform 6.

A busy scene at "Springfield Junction".  I suppose this name is beginning to stick after naming the TMD I made Springfield TMD!

Thanks

I have made my mind up to have the TMD by the yard sidings.  Here is Freightliner 66952 having just arrived at the yard with the TMD in the back ground.  It will be a bit further back but I need to buy some more track for this area.

post-25512-0-38709400-1486562754_thumb.jpg

So this has freed up the top R/H corner of the layout for a aggregate site which i need more track for as it will be two sidings.  I have also included a level crossing over the freight only lines which will be the access road for the TMD.

 post-25512-0-29695800-1486562958_thumb.jpg

The station track work is almost complete now.  6 platforms, 4 through roads and two bays for light engines and DMU services to terminate.

post-25512-0-21917400-1486563048_thumb.jpg

Had a go at making a river on a test piece of wood using Woodland Scenics realistic water.

post-25512-0-84990600-1486563101_thumb.jpg

Also had another go at making trees.  The two trees to the left I have made.  The latest version of tree is  the far left tree and the two trees to the right were bought from shops/online.

nice one the trees look smart mate .

Thanks for your kind comment.  I defo think that my second attempt is better than the first.  I need to try and make my own because it will cost me a lot of money to buy the amount of trees I probably need.  I think my second attempt is better than the ones that I bought.

A few new additions to the fleet.  Two Freightliner HHA coal hoppers that are factory weathered.  Thats now a half decent rake of 6 HHA's now and thats about my limit due to the length of sidings in the yard.

It is a DCC ready model from Hattons.  I thought I had a problem with the compatability of the Hattons decoder and Hornby Select controller so I swapped the decoder for the one in my Freightliner 66.  For some reason both now work fine.  I thought the fault would swap from the 68 to the 66 but I am pleased to say I have no running issues.  I have read a lot of negative comments on this website about this new model but to be honest I am made up with mine.  I have no intention to inspect it against the real thing to find fault with it.  It is a solid loco with a good weight to it, looks smart and runs smoothly over my layout so that's good enough for me.

Hi Peter,

Came onto this via North Kingsford and am glad that I did.  Some great work on both layouts and with the added 'excuse' that you are doing it for the next generation!  The modelling community needs the youngsters to come on board otherwise in a year or few there will be no more railway clubs.

Early on I wondered whether you had had any buckled track in the 'hot' summers.  It had cause me a problem in the distant past when I had a layout in a loft area.

Keep up the good work, cheers, Peter

Hello Peter and thank you for visiting out layout thread.  I didn't seem to have much of a problem with the track work luckily, mind you, it was never actually nailed down.  I never got to that stage of fixing the track down and ballasting.  Hopefully, now that it is in the garage I can fix the track down and ballast the track work.  I am hoping to do this in summer when the glue mix will dry quicker.

With the scenic side of the layout being so bare I have made a hillside in one corner on the countryside section of the layout. I need a rock cutting as the track is close to the back wall of the layout. Having tried various techniques in the past on rock cuttings when the layout was in the attic I have gone with making formers from spare MDF which are covered with wiremesh then covered with mod rock then a layer of polyfiller. Here is a photo half pained and half at the polyfiller stage. Tonight I have been scribing out individual rocks ready for painting later this week.

During the week I painted the remainder of the rock cutting and took a few photos of it with my new Dapol 68 on a nuclear flask train passing by.

The plan is for the rock cutting to drop down into a river and have a farm either side of the river.  I have got 4 Dapol girder bridge trusses ready for the bridge that will span the river and cutting.

With a lot of my track work passing close to the back boards of the layout I am going to need quite a few low relief buildings.  So I had a play with some off-cut MDF pieces cutting them into building type shapes.

post-25512-0-53886800-1489412918_thumb.jpg

Then placing them next to some low relief Metcalfe factories that I have already made.

The old mill car park is a good place to photograph freight workings and light engines!  DRS 68005  passing by.

post-25512-0-84923300-1489412998_thumb.jpg

I also need some low relief buildings in the aggregate area so I had a play making some with MDF again.  The loading tower is Bachmann Scenecraft.  I will add some more detail to these and weather them and then make a decision whether to keep them or bin them.  I have also made a bridge to break up the back board that you can just make out in the photograph.  I quite like this as it gives the impression that the trains could be longer than they are.  I should have taken a closer photo to show this.
