Reflections on Peak Forest

Now I'm definitely going to have to learn to weather the 37's.

I know this is probably telling granny how to suck eggs!! but, photographs, a spare body and bogies of any prototype to practice on, use acrylics and powders 'cos you can, reasonably, easily alter them and just muck about!!

I realise this may sound daft, but in my experience, if is the only way!!

That brings back a few memories!

1980's and my old Series 1 'Rover rolling up there in the snow with my mate Mike, Coachbogie on this site, to take the 'Snow Shots'.

It was the double headed 20 period on the bogies. Though for some reason there was a 45 banking the trains instead of a 37.

We had Lytham StAnnes on a train of ironstone tipplers and double headed 37s on the 4 wheel Peakstone hoppers.

One of the train engines was decidedly ill!! There was a third 37 banking!!

All this and the aformentioned Robbies and pie at the hotel!!!

You really can't get much better than that!!

It was frozen peas and no pies at the Midland yesterday.

The loader from Dove Holes came over to dig out the lane to Smalldale.

Dove Holes Quarry lends a (massive) hand.

They didn't have to wait for a County Council snowplough at Peak Forest. The job was being done by one of the wagon loaders from Dove Holes Quarry.

As for the ZZA  snowplough normally stabled on Peak Forest South Sidings, there was no sign. Probably out keeping Dowlow open to traffic.

Never seen the quarry shovel clearing the roads before but it makes sense really as it can do the job quite easily. I haven't seen any ZZA snowploughs stabled up at Peak for quite a few years now... It has got to be 5 years or longer since they were last there. One used to be parked at end of fuel siding plough end pointing towards Chinley the other in Up sidings on buffer stops pointing towards Tunstead.

Cheers Paul

You are quite right Paul. I'm either living in the past or living on the model of Peak Forest Revived in 2001.

Just checked my photo archive and the last ZZA of immediate note was August 2010. Also present in 2001.

However I notice that Network Rail did send Beilhack ZZA ADB Snowplough 965581 with  97302 & 97303 to Dowlow on 01/03/2018.

Somewhat outside my modelling period so not an excuse to purchase Hatton's latest.

Cheers, Andy

Getting sad now!!!

Way back , in my other life , working as a cowman for the CooP on the Down Ampney estate outside Cirencester, the bad snow always came about now.

We had a big face shovel for silage work and muck shifting, this beast was used to dig out roads when they got snowed up.

We also had two tractors that could be fitted with dozer blades to clear snow.

I realise that it is fashionable to have a go at big employers. The CooP, namely me and my co-workers made sure the inhabitants of the villages and outlying houses on the estate, not all of them anything to do with the CooP, were alright in this sort of weather.

In my 22 years at Down Ampney, there were three years as bad as this.

Yes indeed the Beilhack ploughs up on Thursday with the 97s I didn't see them myself as stuck in work but a few friends did. And Friday morning DRS did ploughs along Hope Valley but not sure which version they used.

I knew it must have been a while ago but 2010 blimey!

Cheers Paul

Snowplough Ramblings...........

Beilhack Ploughs at Peak Forest?

Did either the Network Rail or Colas workings pass Peak Forest last week? Were they photographed?

Come on spotters....

The colourful working below was of 56087 and 56105 in Buxton sidings waiting to head off towards peak forest on snowplough duties having arrived in from Hindlow.

My thanks to Jon, not only for permission to use the photo, but for battling through the snowdrifts to take it. I had been forced to abandon my attempt to get to Peak Forest two days earlier by blizzard conditions and four foot drifts on the A6 north of Dove Holes.

Snowplough Ramblings - Let's get back to some modelling!

'ZZA  awaits its next duty at the south end of Peak Forest yard. The snowplough for the other end of the martialed train is stored during the winter at the end of the fuel siding as this is one of the few sidings at Peak Forest Revived with a buffer stop at its north end.

Throwback Thursday

Buxton based Derby Lightweight approaches Peak Forest station. The Buxton to Manchester Central service has been diverted from the LNWR line due to engineering work.

(The absence of passengers at Peak Forest is true to prototype.)

Some recent photos

(I have been unable to upload any photos for a few days due to a problem with my Chrome browser settings blocking my RMWeb log on. So after many hours of fiddling, and now some feeling of relief, here are a few more photos)

This should really be a post for Throwback Thursday as it precedes the period setting of Peak Forest Revived. However I have wanted to reproduce this train formation since coming across it in the photo below.
