Small Structures at Peak Forest

Reflections on PF recently received a request for photographs of the minor structures around Peak Forest to provide research for the construction of a far more grand model of the prototype by Deltic Man. So I have rummaged the vast Reflections archive to see what small railway constructions litter the landscape around Peak Forest.

Small Structures #1 - The Gas Cupboard1360126429_PeakForest2010_08.31015.jpg.9866efad6ae88ed045f191b11ba688e8.jpg

Small Structures #2 - The Wardrobe ( aka The Other Cupboard )

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 016.jpg

Small Structures #3 & #4  - Signal Boxes courtesy of Dr Who?

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 029 (2).jpg

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 078 (2).jpg

I'm not really sure of what these two structures are for. Can anyone enlighten me?

Small Structures #5 - Portacabin No. 1

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 070.jpg

 - the more southerly of the two cabins.

To be continued........

Small structures at Peak Forest (continued)

Small structure #6

The other, more northerly Portacabin.

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 072 (2).jpg

It seems you cannot have too many Portacabins on a model of Peak Forest ( see below ). But beware they are not all the same: this one has a smaller front window than its twin.

NB nice modelling detail of the puddle on the roof.

For a view of the north end see https://www.flickr.com/photos/neil_harvey_railway_photos/33915852451/in/faves-156749604@N08/

Small structures #7 &  #8  - Two Sheds

Peak Forest 2010.08.31 072 (4).jpg

They speak for themselves in all their lovely shedliness.

To be continued.....

Small structure #9  -  The Privvy

post-27675-0-38734900-1524216177_thumb.jpg

 - a Peak Forest Revived favourite! This was my first foray into scratch building, and the first structure to grace the baseboard of PF Revived.

Small structure #10  - The coal bin

post-27675-0-56280200-1524216684_thumb.jpg

Well, Deltic Man, you asked about small structures.

It even has a history; it replaced a larger coal bin (see Series 2) when the signal box was refurbished, and is extant today.

Small structure #11 -  The one that got away.

post-27675-0-10601900-1524217198.jpg

post-27675-0-58078000-1524217245.jpg

Elusive in the photographic archive, often obscured behind the signal box, or departing locos and wagons, lies The Lamp Oil Storeshed.

And now it is no more: demolished at some unspecified time past, or simply subsumed by rosebay willowherb.

And finally as a preview to Peak Forest - Small Structures Series 2....

Small structure #11  - another Portacabin (of course!)

post-27675-0-23920100-1524218024_thumb.jpg

Peak Forest - Small Structures Series 2 is scheduled to appear in the Autumn.

This looks good, particularly the station building I must finish mine, however I remember peak Forest in steam and early diesel days so my model is based on Peak Forest 1948/68. Here are some photos with compound running in 1959, the fell and 58084 and D5500 in primer on test.

As I rode past Peak Forest yesterday (24/09/18) I couldn't help but notice rather more spotters than is customary on even the sunniest September day.

Amazing what a couple of 73's can do.

Wonderful. Another Peak Forest!

And a model which goes beyond (ie north of) the road bridge.

The Buxton Lime Firms crushing plant looks great, and the period modelled is just crying out for some limestone hoppers.

Have you got any more photos of your model posted anywhere? ( If not you are welcome to put a few more on here).

Nice pictures Andy. 780s looking very spotless.

Layouts looking good too. Still haven't managed to do any on mine of late. Works still extremely busy. Too many trains and not enough drivers unfortunately.

I managed to get myself the Peak stone 07 but it's still sat in its box at the moment.

I did get up to Peak Forest in the summer and managed to cop the 56 and the 37 plus a couple of our trains. Must post them up when I get a chance.

Cheers

Marcus

Hi Marcus. Yes the 07 was irresistible for Peak Forest. And its a gem!

The 07 has blown away the dust covers and drawn out the track rubber. A sign that the summer modelling vacation maybe drawing to a close and the Autumn Revival awaits.

Don't leave yours too long in the box.

Good to hear from you again.

Cheers,

PHV Limestone Hoppers arrive on Peak Forest Revived!

I'm sure there will be weeks and doubtless many pages of discussion about the merits and shortcomings of the Hattons limestone hoppers, but for Peak Forest Revived this is a red letter day.

No wagon has been more eagerly awaited.

So before joining the debate, an initial celebration: some photos of the PHVs in their home environment.........

Hi Paul,

Did you end up going for the weathered wagons, or did you wisely manage to hold off ordering until you had seen Hatton's weathering effort?

I am waiting for some other brave modeller to be the first to take the white spirit to the heavy weathering.

I still hope to get to Hazel Grove MRE this year but I fear I am away the last weekend in October. I in fact postponed my weekend away to then so that I could get to the Wigan show which in the event proved a bit disappointing. The wrong choice!

You have weathered examples in that train?

Despite what others have written, I reckon they don't look too bad.

I had some weathered wagons on order, but cancelled it when all my pristine wagons arrived, partially from pragmatism, could I justify two full trains?!! and partially financially. Chemo treatment, whilst not affecting me too badly, means SSP which don't do much for large wagon orders!!!!

Having seen your wagons and being fiscally more sound, means I'm tempted to 'Have a Punt' on a few.

Being really cheeky, could you post a closer photo of the wagons please?

Your layout goes from strength to strength. You are really getting the atmosphere spot on.

Hi, yes I got the weathered ones as my original intention was to buy one of each model then get additional wagons as needed. So given that the last two have not been produced I doubled up on two then with some extra dosh I had managed to save up ordered some more.

I will have a bash at renumbering some and that means reinstating the yellow id discs that should be clean and present on the left hand end of each solebar plus adding the ohle flashes plus the one missing from under the end lip (between the two T stays). I've plenty of photos of the real wagons taken in 1998 before most went for scrap.

Cheers Paul

Thanks to my photo assistant who as is now customary made several tests on the robustness of the models.

The unweathered version is ICI006A; the weathered version is ICI005CW.

Thanks for posting the shots.

I run in between the two schools of thought of too brown and OK. I would endeavour to clean the number patch on the wagon side. I seem to remember these were kept clean the majority of the time.

Finances permitting, I think I'll have a punt on a few weathered examples.

Vivre La Difference!

Plenty of colour variation on some rakes of the hoppers, whilst at other times they appeared more uniform:-

The current Peak Forest Revived rake includes two unweathered wagons, and I plan to try a couple of lightly weathered examples.

Another visit. Another livery.

No one could say the current rail scene at Peak Forest is monotonous. Peak Forest is fast becoming the home of 'a prototype for everything' -  at least as far as modern liveries are concerned.

Lets hope the current heavy shunter, ex-Fastline  56301, is in better health than its predecessor, the Colas liveried 56105.

A Peak Forest traction calendar of 2018 is a tempting idea just now. I'm certainly relieved that peak Forest Revived is supposed to end around 2005: my budget could never keep up with the wonderful array of traction to which we are now treated.
