Fat Controller
There was a few DUKW's operating on the Thames but I believe that they have now been withdrawn due to safety concerns. The withdrawal must have been fairly recent, as they were still working from their depot between Waterloo and Lambeth Palace when I last visited London.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 23, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2016 The withdrawal must have been fairly recent, as they were still working from their depot between Waterloo and Lambeth Palace when I last visited London. They must have dealt with the problem then. Apparently one caught fire when it was on the river.

David Todd
I was due to go up Shakey this week, looking at the tide tables, Thursday or Friday, will be best, low tide,1030 hours. On my return, PH, had sent my a couple of photos, taken from the road viaduct,to the Western Docks. Re cabling on the 10 chain curve. Thanks P. eastwestdivide
You wouldn't be mocking excesses in interpretation of the H&SAW Act, by any chance? God forbid…. !!! in DSC_0196 ? To be fair, they're working in big unstable holes in the beach with water in the bottom. I don't think I'd refuse one if I was working there.
Stuartthegrant
There is an article called "REINSTATING Shakespeare CLIFF" in the magazine 'RailEngineer' for October this year. Lots of pictures taken from a Drone and an interesting article explaining what went on. You can only get this magazine on subscription on line and it arrives monthly by post. However WWW.railengineer.uk will put you on the mailing list. I have no connection other than that of an interested Railway Fan so I pass this on with my hope other like minded souls will enjoy the content. All the best Stuart Grant........ Fat Controller
The picture of the large hole in the beach shows the remains of an old groin by the look of it shows how the beach level has changed. Indeed- back in the very early photos, parts of that groyne were visible on the surface. I reckon the beach is about 2m higher than it was back in January.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 14, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 14, 2016 Its not unusual for beaches to change or appear or disappear, sometimes within a day or two. Well meant human intervention has sometimes had an affect on another beach several miles away.

jukebox
My word that's a new one on me David, a most interesting read. Was this going on at the same time as the job we have all been following? Interesting indeed! Although this comment raised my curiosity: "Abbotscliffe is a 1,800 metre long twin-track, single bore tunnel, but it was the main reason why the April to September closure was planned." Surely it was planned because the track was cut at Shakey (although I am geographically challenged, and not sure where Abbotscliffe is in relation to Dover)?
