Folkestone-Dover sea wall wash-out

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where the spoil is going?

Dan,who posted on this thread in the early weeks,of the first delivery of stone chips will know.

He sources the traction and wagons.

Have not seen him around for a while.

He did reply to a Fat Controller post about spoil, way back in Feb. I think.

The "clean stone chips", outside. The site,in the lorry park, is being loaded and trucked away.

Here are some of the posts from January.

1. Early days of dealing with spoil.

2. Daily photos.

I thank you all, for your support and credits.

Daily photos, may well be curtailed, after today.

Beach/Seawall defence construction,is due to start, the first week in July.

It will run through to the end of December 2016, project completion.

The rail repairs and beach construction are two separate projects and will not conflict each other.

It is "hoped" that trains will be running,by the end of September 2016.

Thanks for the fantastic photo's of the work going on here.

Seconded.  We are fortunate to have had willing camera-handy locals at both Dawlish and Dover to provide day-to-day coverage of these major events.

That wasn't spoil, it was clean Type 1 aggregate, more akin to large-ish chipping routinely used for temporary road surfaces. The rubbish coming out is as a result of clearing the old Town Yard formation to create a decent working surface for the workforce and machines, and the beginnings of excavating the trackbed.

Unfortunately incorrect. Hoo Junction does not recycle ballast anymore (in fact, Hoo Junction does very little other than marshal trains from an engineering perspective, witht the exception of the sand and stone trips to Cliffe and Grain respectively). The VAST majority of relaid/dropped railway ballast is newly quarried, recycled now tends to end up in sidings if anywhere or sold on to outside enterprise. The spoil from Dover is going ultimately to Whitemoor, and the quality of most of it is poor enough (the top surface coming off the yard is mainly contaminated with chalk clogged soil, and not a huge amount of stone) that it's not being recycled back into the system, but disposed of outside of the railway. There will be some stone cleaned up no doubt, but certainly most of this will be ex-formation and will be stockpiled for secondary jobs like yards and sidings. A lot of it get cleaned, graded and crushed, then sold on. IIRC our last major customer for recycled ballast was the Swanage Railway. Very rarely do I deal with anything mainline requiring reclaimed stone, the only routine application is when the HOBC does it all in situ.

I'm not actually sure what the source quarry for the Type 1 was, if I'm honest. The wagons for Dover were loaded from virtual quarry stockpiles at Eastleigh and Westbury.

Hoo doesn't really have the space for a recycling operation at the moment, it used to be in the Down Yard (and there's still a levelled off overgrown heap of fines), but the surrounding area is now a wagon loading point for NR contractors. There used to be a spoil road at Grain, too. Spent aggregate currently goes to Eastleigh or Whitemoor for offloading, Eastleigh being the Souths main facility for materials handling.

Things may take a different turn once the HOBC makes itself known on Kent....!

Corporation Culvert.

We left this yesterday morning, the third part of the culvert, still to be installed.

Today,I find it has been fitted and the new culvert filled,or just on completion of filling.

Raft 1.

Mainly being used for "storage" of materials for Raft 2. But with other components visible  for raft 1.

I do like, all the concrete surface finishes.

Thanks for continuing to feed us so many fascinating pics, David. Please keep 'em coming.

We've all been somewhat preoccupied with the Corporation Culvert for a while, during which time much preparation work for Raft 2 and beyond has clearly been going on.

The job seems to be getting to that point where each day's progress becomes very noticeable.

Best regards,

John

Agree about progress they seem to be in their stride now and you can see that it is an imaginative design which I NR will ask you to open David as you are the unofficial publicist for them,  lets start a campaign now chaps!
