Well, the final chapter, is nearly at an end.

That sounds almost like the opening phrase from - " I did it my waaayyyy", and a very good way, too. It's nice to get down on to the beach, but I'm going to miss going down to Kent, smelling the sea air, watching the ferries coming and going, and what's happening around the railway. Thank you so much.

Thank you David, for your dedication to keeping us informed with a photo record of the work done to restore the railway and path over the past 15 months or so. The weather over that time was not always favourable. The historical deviations were also of interest.

Thanks SS

While the Western Docks area has indeed suffered a rather dramatic decline compared to photos taken in the mid 70s, the reverse is true of the Eastern Docks, which is far bigger and busier than seen in photos from the same era.

A few hours at Dover Castle looking down at the Eastern Docks illustrates the change quite nicely - if you rewind the clock to the 70s, then the Western Docks (as seen from the Western Heights) would probably have looked the busier of the two.

In many ways it is a symptom of the growth in car ownership over the decades as people stopped using rail for family holidays or business, and while rail passenger numbers are expanding again, we now have the Channel Tunnel to take rail based traffic
