PAD
Well it's all done and dusted apart from adding some coal to the bottom of the bunker and dirtying the upper areas, but leaving inspection plate and lifting hooks visible. The light was still not the best when I took the photos so apologies for that. One other detail I forgot to mention was the holes in on top of the tanks next to the fillers. I spotted these on the two Finney models I saw at Doncaster. Close inspection of the GWR drawing suggests there was a pipe running down vertically through the tank, so I'm guessing the hole was to drain water from the top of the tank to avoid corrosion. It should have a circle of rivets around the holes which was probably the flange inside the tank which held the drain pipe. It was already primed when I added the hole so nothing I could do about the rivets. Well that's it for now. It was a bit of trial lining it out, but I am glad I did rather than doing it than plain black as the lining suits these loco really well in my opinion. In conclusion, it's not the best kit on the market but for the money it's very good value (even buying the extra brass castings) and with some effort can be made into a very nice large prairie model. steve fay
Wonderful build Peter, it shows what can be done with a Scorpio kit. What's next?
PAD
Thanks Steve. Nothing to build at the moment but I have a number of models going through the "paint shop" for my brother. If I can get down to Telford I'm sure there will be something to temp me. Cheers, Peter
mswjr
Peter, very nice build. You are correct about the holes in the tank top,They are for draining water,There are two the same on top of a GWR tender right next to the water dome. Can not wait to see your next build. RMweb Gold Dan Randall Posted June 25, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2016 Congratulations Peter, you've done a cracking job! I hope to build the Finney7 version one day and will do that in BR lined green (with later crest), but I'm surprised at how good your lining transfers look. The 7mm ones you've used look commendably fine, compared with the 4mm scale versions I used on a 14xx tank 30 odd years ago. If/when I build my 61xx, they're certainly worth considering, if the finances won't stretch to a professional painting/lining job! Looking forward to your next project.... Regards Dan Hi Dan, Many thanks. Yes the lining looks quite good and I'm pleased with the results. I would certainly recommend them unless you have the ability to use a ruling pen to a high standard (which I don't). They are not cheap though and despite buying the so called Large Prairie lining set, I found that I had to buy an addition sheet with various corners to complete the lining. The side tank lining panel only suits locos with the lining running under and around the weather screen and not under it as I required. Therefore, I needed the additional sheet just for the tiny bend shown in the small rectangle. The curve in the larger rectangle is not quite right but looks OK but is a slight compromise. Good to hear that the Finney version will be available againand depending on the price I would love to have one myself. Cheers, Peter
