The Bridge at Remagen - N Gauge Rhine Crossing in 1944.

Well, Warley is three days away, and it's been a disasterous week. The train detectors in the storage loops don't work due to a number of reasons, so there's been some frantic reworking of the wiring tiger around the problem. It now works, but not as I want it to. However the real down side is it's taken all the time I'd allocated to getting scenery finished. The left hand boards are definatly work in progress. To all who where expecting to see a finished layout I can only apologise.

Sorry guys.

Keep your spirits up Al.  I'm sure that it will be very well received.  As I'm operating on the layout behind you I'm looking forward to seeing it.   We are always our worse critics especially when the public are coming to see the layout.

Well done on taking the layout to Warley. It's a very impressive piece of work. As I said to you on Saturday, your model of the Rhine looked just like the Rhine, and it does get choppy when there are lots of barges constantly passing by.

With Warley over and done for this year and Remagen safely back home, I'd like to say thanks to all who have been following the layout build and dropped by over the weekend.

The weekend didn't start well the electrical problems of the previous week still plaguing the layout. We basically had a dead fiddle yard at the west end of the layout that Kent we had to hand-ball all the stock though it. It's great credit to Paul, Terry and Ray for persevering with the problem and kept the trains running for both days.

I now have a long list of items to get fixed before Remagebs next outing to Stevenage in January.

Here are a few photos taken over the weekend by various people who helped out.

  • 2 weeks later...

The main cause of the electrical problems I had at Warley was down to the train detectors relay block for the storage sidings not working. Electrics aren't my strong point, but in the week running up to the show I managed to rewrite the control panels and east end loop to get it at just about working. However the west end was more problematic and with time, patience and skill running out it resulted in the dead fiddle yard.

Well, after many hours of head scratching I finally figured out the wiring diagram and rebuilt the relay block. And today tested it. It's now working as intended.

The in-bound operator selects the siding required and the points automatically align. The train is driven in on the in-bound controller. When the train hits the opto-sensor, the power is dropped from the siding from the in-bound controller and set up for the out-bound. When the out-bound operator wants to drive the train out, he selects the siding, points are automatically aligned and train is released to the out-bound controller. Once the train clears the opto-sensor the siding is reset for the next in-bound train.

Jobs to do now are move the sensors back a bit so the trains stop before the fouling point, and build another dozen relay banks for the other end....

As well as the electrics, I've also been working on a bit of scenery got the Erpeler Ley anti-aircraft battery with one of the Nag trucks getting its engine changed and the Freya radar installed.

Hi Al,

I have only just found this thread and have spent the last hour or so reading through it in its entirety.  My only comment echoes those made already.... wow, what a stunning example of exemplary modelling.

I'm sorry to hear of the problems that you had at Warley but I am sure that the majority of the visitors viewing your model were so bowled over by the enormity of Remagen that they will not have noticed, nor cared, about any technical glitches.

An utterly brilliant thread.  Thanks for posting and keeping us up to date with your progress.

Cheers

Lee
