John K
Hi Ken, If they all went together like that you would lose half of your customers! Best, John
jazz
You are probably right there. It still makes a nice change to have a good kit to build though.
jazz
Hi All. More progress is made. There was some adjustments made to the leading brakes to allow sufficient swing. The bending of the front and rear footplate drops were done without resorting to annealing. Thanks to the excellent Metalsmith bending bars.
jazz
Hi. A bit more done today on the Princess class. The footplate was a doodle compared to the boiler/smokebox and firebox casting. Being white metal and not being the 49mm wide as the instructions say, it was impossible the pull the base out to correct it. (Unless you are a body builder) So it has to stay 1mm too narrow. The boiler needed some trimming to fit the firebox front and the middle and rear splashers required some attention to get the boiler to sit between them. I guess if you were building it to 7 scale it would fit OK. These were only minor problems easily solved though. Otherwise all went well.

jazz
Uh hum... "Scale7" JB. That's what I meant Jonathan, just a bit of backward thinking. Edited March 9, 2016 by jazz
jazz
Hi all. After a week enjoying the delights of Devon, I have the Princess all ready for the off. All went quite well with the build, especially with the valve gear, no issues with clearances on this one.

jazz
Thanks Peter. What's next. Well, I have a choice of kits to build and will decide on Wednesday what that will be. I think it's going to be a small tank though.

jazz
Hi all. Here we go with another one. This time a Zero Zephyrs Webb Special Tank. An interesting build with a lot of resin castings. The chassis was quite straight forward although the milled coupling rods did not match up with the axle bush holes in the milled brass chassis frames. A bit of work redrilling the holes in the rods eventually had things running smooth. The body is going OK so far, a bit of adjusting to get the castings to sit right so not too bad.
jazz
Hi all. A quiet Easter at home on the WB. The Webb tank is now almost ready for priming. As surprisingly tricky little kit to build with lots of assembly and disassembly to get it done. Here she is almost there.
Simond
Nice bit of work, Ken. Mr Webb certainly did have his own ideas on things.... Is the cab backsheet a resin cast, and, could you post another view? I'm slightly confused by it. It looks really thin & properly delicate. best Simon
jazz
Simon, yes they are fragile resin castings. No quite as fragile when assembled. They had to be straightened, this was achieved by running under the hot tap until softened and gently straightening.
jazz
Hi all. The Webb 'special' tank is now boxed off ready to go. Tuned into a nice little loco, right up my street.
Crewe North
Very nice build......but.....point of order........it is a Ramsbottom Special tank as updated (new frames, chimney, rods, safety valve, overall cab ,splashers and wheels) by 'our Frankie'. jazz
Er, that was built as per kit and the kit says it is the Webb Special and the drawings say the same. Although I do agree it Ramsbottom that introduced them and Webb built most of them unaltered. This model is of the Webb period. jazz
An interesting build, modifying a K1 kit into a K1/1. That will keep me busy for a while with a certain amount of scratch build required .

jazz
Onwards now with the LNER K1/1. The front end has required a bit of remodelling as the kit is designed as a K1. Quite a bit of scratch building and refiguring to achieve this. The photos show some of the work so far. First the tender, no mods on this. And is a connoisseur kit. The ex Meteor chassis unmodified as yet, a simple design. The footplate with the rebuilt front end started. Both mated up to decide the remaining mods to be done. Well under way now.
