When people in Europe think of Asian low cost carriers they tend to think of Air Asia, but there's a huge LCC sector in SE Asia, with airlines like Vietjet, Citilink, Jetstar Asia and Scoo operating large route networks and hitting the more traditional full service carriers. Some of them are sister companies of full service airlines, Scoot is part of the same company as Singapore Airlines, Citilink with Garuda Indonesia and going the other direction Lion Air (LCC) set up Batik Air as a full service carrier. I've flown Vietjet a few times and although service is basic it is perfectly acceptable transport, aircraft are spotless and fitted out pretty much equivalent to short haul full service carriers. I do find that if you need checked luggage (and many don't) and any other extras fares rapidly approach the more traditional carriers but if you travel light you can get real bargains.

Just saw this whilst leaving East Midlands gateway

While i was waiting on the goods at washwood heath earlier I spotted a 747 heading into Birmingham so had a look in flight radar to see what it was, turns out it was a National Airlines fight to savannah that turned back due to a technical issue, won’t know what but looked impressive!

SVN is actually Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, FL.  It is just a few miles from SAV Savannah Hilton Head commercial airport.  Hunter Field has a long runway and is used for chartered military transportation which is probably what this flight was.

Georgia, not Florida.

Obviously not something needing a long runway as he passed Manchester to get back to BHX which isn’t massively long for the 747

You are of course right...slip of the fingers, and the mind!

However here is somewhere else to visit when in Savannah, GA, The Eighth Airforce Museum - The Mighty Eighth.  This B17 is meant to represent the one that the citizens of Savannah paid for.  However the real one was not finished until after the war and was eventually scrapped.  The one in the museum is made up of parts from many other aircraft.......note the reference to Hunter Field on the rear fuselage.

I have been to the Mighty Eighth museum, it is worth a visit especially as it is right at one of the I-95 exits (102 at Pooler, GA) and a few plane are visible from the highway; but, if you see them when traveling northbound, you just missed the exit! Here a view of it from the on ramp to NB I-95:

EDIT: There is an "English" cafeteria inside that has some decent food. Is it 1940s English? I do not know but it was good.

I heard something different departing Birmingham yesterday and checked FR24 to find the same Aircraft. I didn't realise it had turned back, will have to check for a departure time. Most of the modern stuff is barely noticeable once at 10,000 feet but the current stand-out are regular AN-26 operated flights.

I was also going to go out today for the 5Z11 Eastleigh - Leicester LIP GBRf move but RTT wasn't showing the formation and there was too much horizontal rain so I hung out of the loft window to see it. Due to the miscalculated undergrowth I only saw a GBRf liveried loco from about half a mile away but could hear it for a couple of minutes between leaving Coventry Station and slowing for the 20mph TSR over a week bridge, I think it was a class 50...

We had a large visitor to Glasgow at the start of the week, despite living a couple of miles from the airport, I didn't see or hear it.

One of my favourite aircraft/airline combos. They use these on a lot of intra-Asian flights in long haul configuration, so flying from Singapore - Hanoi (3 hours) get full IFE.

Thanks, from what I could see it looked like the 50 was leading.

*EDIT, just seen a video from that idiot with a camera on his head and it was the  large logo 56 leading...

Not great for them, they might as well leave it to Elon Musk , he has a lot more resources than Branson.

As we know from the airlines, despite the warm and fuzzy felling, they are always one of the quickest to lay off staff

  • 2 weeks later...

Not sure what aircraft that cockpit is from but from my brief stint as a Beechcraft mechanic I seem to remember the yellow tips were normally only on the front of propeller blades to prevent distraction......
