RMweb Premium keefer Posted October 6, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2016 Now we all know that the originals are the best, right? hmm, not always.... Contributions welcome, especially due to personal taste, where a later version of a song is better than the original. To start off, some of mine.... Spirit in the Sky - Doctor & the Medics (Norman Greenbaum) Hello, I Love You - Adam Ant (Doors) Roadhouse Blues - Status Quo, esp live (Doors) Mack the Knife - King Kurt (various) Wet Wet Wet - Love Is all Around (Troggs) Have You Ever Seen the Rain - Ramones (Creedence Clearwater Revival) It Must Be Love - Madness (Labi Siffre) You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins (Supremes) I think it's down to (esp. if the original is 60s or early 70s) the original is a bit too laid back or ploddy, sometimes it's down to a changed arrangement or it could be a totally different take on things entirely. You decide! (and play nice now, nae fechtin')

brianthesnail96
It's probably just as well that we don't have the negative buttons any more- I prefer Metallica's Whiskey to the Thin Lizzy version (which is a sort of cover in itself of course). I prefer Hanoi Rocks' cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Up Around the Bend too, but that might be because I heard the cover first.

RMweb Premium njee20 Posted October 6, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2016 Hurt - Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails) Hallelujah - Rufus Wainright (Jeff Buckley) Sound of Silence - Disturbed (Simon & Garfunkle) Not entirely sure the latter is better, but it's bloody good, and earned Paul Simon's approval. Close run.

Tim H
Panic Room - Bitches Crystal (ELP) Completely rebuilds the song from the ground up with a totally different arrangement. Turisas - Rasputin (Boney M) The arrangement is actually very close to the original, just with louder guitars and drums, and a different vocal style. Many disco standards just *work* as metal songs. Gimme Gimme Gimme - Yngwie Malmsteen (ABBA) It's also better than any of Yngwie's own songs, and proves Bjorn and Benny are far, far better songwriters than he is.
PatB
R.A.M.O.N.E.S - Motorhead (The Ramones) But then, as I've mentioned before, I find the Ramones disappointingly middle of the road considering their supposed punk credentials.
eastwestdivide
... Hallelujah - Rufus Wainright (Jeff Buckley) ... More ( )s required - Leonard Cohen original! I think I prefer the original, but it's a close-run thing. (Hang on, wasn't More Brackets Required a Phil Collins album?)

34theletterbetweenB&D
Of course, in formally notated music, the cover versions are almost always superior to the original composer's performance effort - where available! Pretty much anything written by Bob Dylan And to exquisite effect: Simple twist of fate (Dylan) Joan Baez. Has me in stitches every time.

Jon Fitness
Eloise....The Damned. (Paul&Barry Ryan) Prefer Dave Vanian's voice! Walk on By...The Stranglers (Dionne Warwick) Only Love can break your heart...St Etienne (Neil Young) The Damned (performing as Nazz Nomad & the Nightmares) released a spoof(?) album of 60's garage rock classics called Give Daddy The Knife Cindy. Every one is better than the original IMHO. Ones that shouldn't have happened! Ever Fallen in love...Fine Young Cannibals (Buzzcocks) Just dire!!! Valerie....Amy Winehouse (Zutons) Not a fan of Amy's voice and the arrangement took all the passion out of the original. 96 Tears...The Stranglers (? & the mysterions) None of the charm of the original.
