Grimsby, Immingham and surrounding area

Recommended Posts

Firstly we have a couple of steel coil workings ex Grimsby 47. 270 (Swift) on 8/6/92 and 37.516 on an unknown date.

Next we move to Barnetby and we firstly have two images of 47.973 and the Laboratory 23 stock in 8/8/90

About 1 month earlier we had a visit from the Track Recording Vehicle.

If anyone could enlighten me to what said items do/did it would be appreciated.

Tonights selection is West Marsh sidings and some evidence for the extensive steel workings at the time. Such images are impossible now, assuming the workings persist, due to new houses and vegetation that has taken over large amounts of the siding space.

We first have 4 images of the sidings with 08.751 and 37.517 busying themselves circa 8/90

Next we have one of the coil wagons and 47.402 circa 8/90

The Generator 47's ended there time in the Immingham area and I'll post a selection of 47.401 in various liveries later.

Next 08.405 light engine 10/89

37.058 with long coil load date unknown

Finally 08.508 busying herself in 2 images, one with couple of steel wagons and one just a brakeman

Few more for tonight

Firstly 56.061 being chased. First image leaving Grimsby Docks and second image at Great Coates station.

Iron ore workings feature heavily in the area and at the time I was photographing usually double headed 37's

37.106 and 37.377 at Brocklesby  4/9/89 and in fairness working quite hard. The other is 37.225 and 37.275 Stainless Steel Pioneer at Barnetby on 28/9/89

Lastly and keeping the 37 theme we have 37.004 leaving West Marsh sidings and joining the mainline just short of Great Coates on an unknown date with another load of coils.

The single image of 37.075 at Barnetby on 28/9/89 is a mystery to me, especially with the 10 tarp covered shod wagons in tow. Never seen another similar working

Firstly an unidentified 56 at Ulceby Junction 2/5/97, no signal box now and by this time I think blue 56"s were a bit thin on the ground.

That'll be 56004 Doctor. Romanian cabs were replaced following crash damage and she was given a banger blue repaint. Being post privatisation though, the arrows of indecision were not applied.

I am pretty sure these are Shochood B http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brshockhoodb I'll admit to being surprised, I hadn't realised any survived this late, most had been converted to DACE. Very nice and interesting.

These were the last of the SUW coil wagons , they were stored at Margam in the late 80's , then migrated north to work out of I think Parkgate and Rawmarsh with wire in coil form , saw a quite large rake of these through Newport heading north to Sheffield again in the late 80's

Nearly exhausted the West Marsh siding images for the moment. They will be back however.

Thanks for the maps, I do have some images taken at Immingham Depot and have a couple more taken on the docks too. I was able to get access as the GP practice I was attached to covered medical issues on the ships. Bonus as had to visit one ship docked on on the ore handling jetty and would have been rude not to take a picture or two on the way!

Snow covered West Marsh 3/91 with 20.176 and 20.098 nearest the camera. The other two Class20's visible in one image are a complete mystery.

Next up is 08.405 busying herself with some coil wagons 11/90

We then have 37.227 with more coil wagons on 9/1/90 and as a complete bonus the ADM track recorder hove into view a few minutes later.

Finally a request for a date please. Cleethorpes did once have a 58 tour and the image is taken at Brocklesby. Having gone to all the trouble to drive out to photograph her I omitted to record both the locomotives and the date!

Happy for suggestions on the order: more iron ore workings, oil workings, multiple light locomotive departmental workings,  the local IIImenite trip working toTioxide plant, Generator 47's especial D1500 or Immingham Depot?

Just reading the 'Legend' top right.

Toatl capacity 174,000 tons of coal in wagons.

Even Paul Bartlett might have run out of film on a tour round the 166 Miles of track.

Loving the pics, Doc, please keep them coming.

the photo  of class 37004 looks like it has the BDW coil wagons with wooden cradles in tow , only saw a couple of these when they worked to Panteg steelworks from Grimsby . Maybe another wagon for me to do !

Think we will have a few updates this weekend in-between jobs. Got some medical work to on Saturday and the Bluespot at Ludborough is having a visit from me on Sunday.

Firstly the level crossing into Grimsby Docks 8/91 with 20.046 and 20.176 entering light locomotive.

Next a selection from Brocklesby when it was still possible to get on the platform. Must have looked a bit odd between GP surgeries standing on the platform in my work suit with camera handy.

37.512 taking steel to Grimsby.

37.512 returning from Grimsby with coils. Short turnaround meant I was able to get the working in both directions.

We also have single closer image of one of the coil wagons

Then 37.510 ex Grimsby Docks again on coils 6/92

Finally and pretty sure it was on same day we have two 20's light locomotive, 121 leading but no record of her partner

Need to head off to work soon but a couple more before going.

Firstly the ore trains running between Immingham and Scunthorpe did throw up different livery combinations and we have 2 images from Brocklesby

Firstly 2 unidentified 37's heading back to Immingham taken from the road over bridge on unknown date. Guessing was unable to get onto the platform by now, or it was a quick shot while moving from side to side?

An earlier image from the platform at Brocklesby 9.91 of two (nice symmetry) 37's in large logo livery, 37.057 and 37.116 wearing unofficially names Viking and Comet?

Next after rummaging deep into the box another 2 from Great Coates for Baz.

37.013 unofficially Vampire with empty plate wagons from memory

Next 37.227 again with coils though its interesting to note they are plastic wrapped this time

Little bit more today.

We have a visit to Immingham Docks. I think I got into the docks as a GP visiting one of the ships (the practice did cover the ships at that time) Must have looked odd, toddling about in my MG Metro, wearing a suit and clambering onto one ship with no hi-vis, just my suit and medical bag!

All Immingham shots taken 6/92

56.076 in vicinity of coal handling plant.

Immingham West signal box, looks GCR but as on ABP land is in their colours

08.445 (again) shunting in the fertiliser loading area.

Lastly even at this late stage it was still possible to find industrial locos in odd nooks and cranies.

Unidentified blue 0-6-0 in J Potts scrapyard, taken 10/89

Sentinel shunter New Holland Pier 10/89, subsequently moved to Lincolnshire Wolds but when last heard some one tried to start a seized engine and didn't help its survival case.

On a happier note 2 Fowler shunters at Immingham Conoco Refinery 11/89. At least one has been saved and again is at Lincolnshire Wolds in working order until reasonably recently and used on PW trains.

Next we have my personal favourite industrial type. This is Colonel B at the Ciba-Geigy plant in Grimsby mid 92. She is a rare locomotive a Hunslet Yardmaster. I think only 4 built and only 1 survivor. The doors are add on as she is supposed to be driven from the running board. Controls are duplicated so its possible to drive her from either side. Currently in usable condition at Lincolnshire Wolds. I understand the name has some link to the company.

The 08's are taken in close proximity.

08.537 with ferry wagon is the only image i have of rail deliveries to Ciba-Geigy, taken 10/89

08.665 is at Moody Lane crossing The Ciba plant is off to the left and the locomotive is taking the avoiding line back to Immingham from Grimsby.

Finally before a trip to Lincolnshire Wolds we have a of couple of locomotive working into Cleethorpes. Not a common occurrence.

47.222 Appleby Frodingham 8/90 delivering a single fuel oil tanker. Taken from Suggits Lane crossing. Other images I'll post later show how this area has changed greatly

Next its the Royal train 22.1.04. Taken from Norfolk Lane as I didn't fancy having to explain myself to security why I was taking photographs (probably illegal anyway) of said item

There's nothing illegal about taking photos of the Royal Train as long as you are not on railway land or inside a security cordon.   I've got quite a few but I've always been happy to explain my actions to any police officers that ask.

A few more

56.116 with empty coils 5/93 at Brocklesby

56.116 again on empty coils 6/94 pulling into Grimsby Docks.

The rest of the images appear to be from one session 6/92 at Brocklesby again. The state of the station is sad but since these images she has had a massive make over.

It is interesting to note how things have changed regarding locomotive classes and liveries.

60.027 on coal hoppers.

37.371 in departmental livery

37.100 with  a barely worthwhile load

60.050 with ore load. Hardly any noise when compared with the pairs of 37's used in the past

two unidentified Construction sector 37's not a livery seen much in the area

37.421 I think, in a very odd livery, just the oil sector sticker on the cab side confirming her allocation

Now we have a few images of the Ilmenite workings between Immingham Docks and Grimsby Tioxide plant. Ilmenite when processed is a white powder and found in paint, plastics and paper. The ore is oddly black.

Roughly every 6 weeks a train ran between the works and the docks and it was fortunate I caught one of the workings in 1/90

I was also treated to an escorted tour of the works in 10/89. They were a bit suspicious of my request as previous visitors turned out to be Greenpeace activists and caused a bit of mayhem.

The wagons were yellow or red top depending on the weight of contents they could carry.

I also caught the same working in 5/92 at West Marsh sidings.

For the records:

37.516 on steel billets and 37.884 i think on the Tioxide working

A selection of images from my tour. The working locomotives are currently at Lincolnshire Wolds and at least one is serviceable though at a recent oil change the magnets in the oil filter were a bit furry!

Finally we have 37.009 Typhoon working her way round from the exchange sidings, collecting the token and then on to Great Coates via West Marsh.
