RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 7, 2017 I use digitrax, it too has two controllers per handset unit. I did all the costings (Yorkshireman see!) and I decided that their kit offered the best initial cost vs expandability costs. I initially bought an NCE power cab but didn't get on with it for various reasons - flogged it on Ebay and bought digitrax from SCC4DCC (use Google), usual disclaimers. Had played with the digitrax handsets on The Laird of this parish's erstwhile Bradfield layout. Thanks Andy, Rich uses one of these to and highly recomends it Cheers
RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted January 7, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 7, 2017 Haha at least they only knicked the tires Jinty's speaker is great but I'll use the zimo 3D speaker Paul supplied in the green 08 along with his v2 just to make it even more different, can't wait to get the 40 sound fitted, have you done yours yet an what speakers did you use?? Not sure what size speakers I'll get away with in it to be honest. I'm going with the 5 sidings for now as I can get to grips with everything 7mm, so I need to try and tackle templot now wish me luck. Thanks again Haha! Not done my 40 yet, it's in the queue for audio and DCC! If you get stuck with Templot, just shout - or if you want anything tweaking on an existing plan thrown me the box file over and I'll have a look. Just a thought, know it's a trek from you, but if your Mrs fancies a shopping day in Lincoln, pop into Digitrains as I think they have various different makes and models rugged up that you can go try. How do you get on with accessing the higher functions? A couple of guys at our Club have them and when I was showing them the 08 they couldn't get above f10 for some reason. You can. Keys 1-12 are direct, then press OPTN which is latched then 1-10 now gives you 11-20, press OPTN again and you get 21-28. So if you wanted F24 and then F26, you press OPTN twice, then number 4, then number 6. Then exit. Nice and easy!
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 9, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2017 I nearly started weathering the green gronk tonight but but thought a night searching through Flickr for inspiration was on the cards, I used to love modelling with my dad and today would of been his 70th, he would of loved all this dcc sound stuff and the fact I've gone big I'm itching to start building but as soon as possible and as much as I want to start KX I'm drawn to liverpool railways so much it's hard doing something different Cheers
billy_anorak59
At the risk of upsetting any decisions made, and not wishing to upset the KX fans or anything, but is KX set in stone? Did you look any further into Birkenhead? Just the bit round the 'new' 2-road diesel shed and fuelling point would be right up your (Mollington) street - and it's nearly Liverpool after all!!

Thanks Billy, nothing's set in stone yet I've got some bullhead, 500 sleepers and chairs and that's it I've had a look at Mollington street but not in great depth but I will do a bit more research, I've also mucked around with a few fictional ideas, but I'm not in any rush I suppose although it would be nice to start something soon, in the mean time I'll just keep weathering those gronks!! Thanks again

Thanks again Cheers Paul ....just thought I'd ask (being from Wirral and all). Keep up the great work with the gronks - you've got a great eye for colour and texture - some of your stuff on ELJ was so 'right'! Billy, I have just typed Birkenhead Mollington st depot in Flickr. (I can still smell the diesel now....!!!) - cheers. Thanks Billy I loved building ELJ so think that's why there's such a pull for something based around the area, I'm going to try and get an hour in on an 08 tonight And thanks Paul Looking through Flickr shows that Edgehill did have a diesel depot but it's a bit basic https://flic.kr/p/ohTQoJ https://flic.kr/p/bnEd5R https://flic.kr/p/o1A763 https://flic.kr/p/dsKsoq A two road corrugated fuelling shed by the looks of it, a fuel storage Road with a large tank another siding at the side and a run around loop going by the few photos on the net, it could be adapted though? I have come up with half a plan so hopefully something worth posting soon maybe. Many thanks again for all the great comments
Tove
I'm itching to start building but as soon as possible and as much as I want to start KX I'm drawn to liverpool railways so much it's hard doing something different Cheers If drawn to the railways of Liverpool then that`s probably what you should do,especially if that`s what your comfortable with and makes your modelling more enjoyable. On a personal note,I`ve tried so many times to model differnet thing`s,that ive actullay lost count of where i am now with layout`s started.(and never finished!) Which is why i`m modelling my local area in a time that i have some of best memories from....after all this hobby is in one way a form of escapism... Anyhoo, i shall follow along in what ever direction you go!. cheers, Brian.

But the biggest news thanks to help off Rich and Brian, I'd like to announce that after three years I've managed to master (at a basic level) Templot, pinch me I'm dreaming Cheers

Rich Thanks mate, well I know the basics but that's good enough for me now, need to learn how to import pictures and draw a track plan over them etc, so here's to the next three years Cheers
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 11, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2017 Last night I managed to finish the first layer of weathering, I normally seal this using Railmatch matt varnish using the airbrush as aerosols don't normally do a very good job but thought I'd try Dullcoat having been recommended by Jinty and I have to say it worked great I let it stand in warm water for ten minutes then a good shake, I can highly recommended it! So left to dry overnight I've given it a quick going over with the scratch pen this morning to remove the majority of the powder. I think one more layer of weathering, sealing and same again and I'll be happy with it as I don't want it to dirty. Cheers

RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 12, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2017 Another 30 minutes last night seen more work with the scratch pen and the ends weathered, then this morning I sealed it again. Just need to remove the Maskol and I think it's finished, I'm sure there might be one or two little bits to tidy up though. Cheers

RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted January 12, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2017 Hi Paul, Its that point where you get stuck for choice!! A lot depends on where your looking to take the collection In the future I guess. KX Depot could probably be done just about full size in the space you have available, but there again Buxton is doable, you might just need to shorten a couple of roads, but thats no major problem and wouldn't affect the 'look'. Knowing you like the transition period, KX - 1960s period would be 31s, 40s, 47s, 55s, maybe the odd 33 that could have crept in on a working to KX Goods. The big advantage being that steam would have been banished to Top Shed at that point, so you don't need to worry about the kettles. That brings the question that the blue 08 would have been early 70s I think .. might just have crept into 1969 I guess - so alot depends on what period you want and what you want in the future stock list. However, Buxton has a wider choice of locos - I'm not sure about the transition period around Buxton, but I suspect the odd WD, 8F and Black 5 could have crept in! Was the diesel depot built on the site of the old steam shed or was that a different place? Somebody may know, I don't. But come into the blue period and you can run just about anything!!! Including your blue 08. Either is doable - for me, id go KX, its compact, limited but interesting point work and plenty of opportunity to move things around, plus I like anything ECML! But this is yours, not mine!!!! Rich Kx 1960s add classes 15, 23, 37, 46, falcon, dp2... A great mix! Phil
